Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What kind of elemental family is the story more focused on?

Answer: Fire

"Elemental" is set in Element City, a fictional place which is home to elementals of all four kinds. The main story arc revolves around a Fire family, the Lumens, consisting of spouses Bernie and Cinder, and their daughter Ember, who is born in Element City and is the film's protagonist.
2. What is the main difficulty that the Lumen family faces when trying to settle in Element City?

Answer: Rejection from other elementals

Cinder and Bernie were originally from Fireland, and they moved to Element City after their house was destroyed by a storm. Although they do have their own language, they have no trouble communicating in English with the rest of the inhabitants of Element City.

They do, however, find themselves in trouble upon their arrival, as most other residents tend to avoid Fire elementals due to their hazardous nature. They eventually settle at Firetown, a neighborhood specifically designed for Fire elementals.
3. Bernie and Cinder carried an artifact from their hometown with them, which represents their traditions. What is it?

Answer: A blue flame

Back in Fireland, every family had their own blue flame, a sacred relic that encompasses their traditions. When the Lumens emigrated to Element City to rebuild their lives, they took their blue flame with them and set it on a bonfire in a separate room inside their store.
4. When Ember grows up, she is expected to take over the family store. What big event is she put in charge of, to prove she's ready to manage the business?

Answer: The Red Dot Sale

Similar to Black Friday, The Fireplace, the Lumens' store, held an annual Red Dot Sale. Ember had been showing great interest in running the store and proved herself quite capable, and although Bernie was glad to see her working so hard, he kept telling her that she could take over "when you're ready".

As Bernie was getting a little old and ill, he trusted her daughter to run the store on that year's Red Dot Sale. It was a major task for Ember, since she had a lot of trouble controlling her temper when customers got a little over-demanding. As she opened the door, a swarm of customers stormed into the store -- which eventually became too much for Ember to handle.
5. Where do Wade and Ember meet for the first time?

Answer: In Ember's basement

Overwhelmed by the massive number of customers, Ember runs down to the basement to prevent her temper tantrum from blowing up the whole store. She tries to calm down but ends up exploding anyway, causing a water pipe to break and start flooding the whole basement. During the flood, a Water elemental, Wade Ripple, who works as a sanitation inspector, finds his way into the basement through the broken pipe.

After checking the place, Wade notices some irregularities in the piping and writes down a report that could end in the shop's closure. Ember starts chasing after him to stop him, and eventually the two team up to solve the problem and prevent the closure.
6. When caught inside the store by Bernie, what does Wade pretend to be?

Answer: A food inspector

Ember's parents are not fond of Water elementals, for obvious reasons. So, when Ember and Wade start spending time together, she tries to keep him away from her parents to avoid trouble. However, at one point, Wade goes back to Ember's basement and they are caught by Bernie, who immediately demands an explanation.

Wade then says that he's a food inspector, to which Bernie reacts by feeding him some of the treats that Fire people eat. As he is made of water, eating the boiling food causes some hilarious (and maybe painful!) reactions in his body.
7. Wade takes Ember to Central Gardens for her to see a Vivisteria flower. As the place is flooded, she can't enter. How does he help her go down the station?

Answer: Inside an air bubble

Ember recalled that, when she was a young girl, their parents took her to Central Gardens to see a Vivisteria flower, but they weren't allowed for being Fire elementals. The place then flooded and was closed, depriving her of any chance to see the flower.

Wade devises a plan with the help of his boss, Gale, an Air elemental. As he and Ember walk into the main hall of the Garden, Gale creates an air bubble in the water for Ember to step in. Wade then carries her down to where the Vivisterias are located, fulfilling her dream. He then has to rush her back outside before the air runs out.
8. As their relationship grows stronger, Wade takes Ember to meet his family. What is their favorite game?

Answer: The Crying Game

Wade's family live in a luxurious building, as do many of the Water elementals. Wade had been talking so much about Ember that they were all delighted to finally meet her. All of them, as well as Wade, are extremely emotional, and they break into tears at any time. It's no surprise, then, that they like to play a game to see how fast one member can make the others cry.

Wade is tasked with the difficult task of making Ember cry. Though his efforts are initially fruitless, he eventually makes her shed some tears after confessing his love for her. Even though they both love each other, on her way out Ember decides to break up with Wade for fear of disappointing her parents.
9. After the massive flood hits Firetown, Wade rushes back to save Ember. In the process, they both get locked in a sealed room with the blue flame. The heat makes Wade slowly evaporate and Ember is devastated. However, she realizes she can still bring him back to life. What does she notice?

Answer: The water vapor has condensed on the ceiling

Despite being heartbroken after Ember rejects him, Wade notices the dam had broken completely and that it is flooding the whole Firetown. He frantically runs to Ember's family store to help her, and finds her trying to save the blue flame from all the water. They carry it into a back room but the ceiling collapses, leaving them both locked in. Both Ember's heat and the flame's causes Wade to start evaporating. With nothing left to do, they both swear their love for each other and share one last hug.

The next day, Bernie and Cinder find Ember mourning Wade and comfort her, until she hears a drop of water. She looks up and sees moisture on the ceiling. Placing a pot below it, she starts playing the Crying Game, and collects all the drippings. When enough water is gathered, Wade emerges from the pot.
10. Ember finally decides that she doesn't want to run the family business. As she and Wade are leaving Element City, she says goodbye to her parents. How do Fire people bid farewell to each other?

Answer: A respectful bow

When meeting Wade's family, Ember impressed them with their glass-making abilities, prompting Wade's mother to recommend her for an internship on a glass factory far away from Element City. Realizing that the idea of running the family store didn't make her happy, she tells Bernie and Cinder, who show support for her decision and also for her relationship with Wade.

As a sign of respect and thankfulness, she bows to Bernie right before boarding the vessel that would take her and Wade to her internship. Bernie bows back, reaffirming his support for her decisions, something he didn't get from his father when he left Fireland.
