Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Winston Hubert McIntosh is much more widely known under the stage name Peter _____. He played guitar on albums such as "Catch A Fire" and "Burnin'" (both 1973).

Answer: Peter Tosh

The Wailers were formed by Peter Tosh as The Wailing Wailers, and the band had a 60s ska hit with "Simmer Down". They recorded a number of singles before splitting up in 1965. When he got together with Bob Marley they dropped the Wailing to become The Wailers.

When they got together with Lee "Scratch" Perry they pioneered the reggae sound. Tosh left The Wailers in 1974 and embarked on a solo career, which never reached the heights of Bob Marley's, possibly due to his hardline political views and his campaigning for the legalization of cannabis.

Peter Tosh was murdered in his own home in 1987 by burglars.
2. Peter Hammill has been lead vocalist in this progressive rock band since their inception, and has also had a prolific solo career. Who are they?

Answer: Van Der Graaf Generator

Peter Hammill's first solo album is "Fool's Mate" (1971), although the Van Der Graaf Generator album "The Aerosol Grey Machine" is practically a solo effort featuring the musicians of Van Der Graaf Generator.

Confused? To further complicate matters Hammill has stated that many songs on his solo albums started off as Van Der Graaf songs, and are often performed by Van Der Graaf musicians. Despite this incestuous set-up, the band and fans see a clear distinction between what is Van Der Graaf and what is Hammill, claiming Hammill's work is from a much more personal perspective.

Hammill solo has certainly tried out a lot more styles, even bordering on punk and pop at times, whereas Van Der Graaf Generator are firmly within the progressive rock genre.
3. Pete Doherty made his name in The Libertines and Babyshambles, but what is his solo album of 2009 called?

Answer: Grace/Wastelands

Unfortunately, Pete Doherty's "private" life has overshadowed how good his music, with The Libertines, Babyshambles and solo, actually is.

The Libertines only recorded two albums in their original form, but they are great slabs of catchy, clever pop. The Babyshambles are equally worthy of a listen, although they can tend to veer off into, well, shambles. His solo album is a much more difficult piece of work where he explores sound a lot more than with his other acts.

Doherty's erudite lyrics in particular set him apart from his contemporaries, showing an eclectic range of interests and a biting wit rarely seen in pop stars.

"Addicted" is a 2009 Devin Townsend album. "The Frozen Borderline" is an album by Nico. "Down In Albion" is the Babyshambles' debut album.
4. Pete Sandoval played in a couple of legendary heavy metal bands. With which band did Pete record "Altars Of Madness", "Blessed Are The Sick" and "Covenant"?

Answer: Morbid Angel

Pete Sandoval was drummer in the hugely influential Terrorizer, who broke up when he left to join Morbid Angel in 1988. Morbid Angel had already gained a hefty reputation on the underground and even recorded an album, released later as "Abominations of Desolation", but things really took off when Sandoval joined. He's often cited as one of the most influential extreme metal drummers, and arguably brought the joys of blast beats to the masses.

Terrorizer released grindcore classic "World Downfall" in 1989, and got back together for 2006's "Darker Days Ahead". Guitarist Jesse Pintado died shortly after its release, but the band have carried on with a replacement, Katina Culture. A third album, called "Hordes Of Zombies" is due out in 2012.

Morbid Angel's eight studio album, "Illud Divinum Insanus", was released in 2011.
5. Pete Townshend is famed guitarist in rock legends The Who. The band was briefly called something else in the early years, what?

Answer: The High Numbers

Pete Townshend is guitarist and main songwriter in The Who. The band were called The Who, then changed to the High Numbers for one single, "I'm the Face/Zoot Suit", before going back to being called The Who.

Lifehouse is the name of a project that Townshend began after touring with the hugely successful "Tommy" rock opera. It was dropped and the band made the "Who's Next" album, but songs from Lifehouse have cropped up in Townshend's solo work and with The Who. He's picked it up again at various times but has never really become a coherent piece of work to match "Quadrophenia" or "Tommy".

The Guess Who are a Canadian band who formed in the mid-1960s and are still around despite splitting up in the mid-1970s for a while. They are mostly known for the song "American Woman".

The Magic Numbers are a band made up of two pairs of siblings, Romeo and Michele Stodart and Angela and Sean Gannon. The latter pair had a band called Guess before forming The Magic Numbers.
6. This Pete is the original bassist and founding member of the British hard rock band UFO who produced such classic albums as "Obsession", "Force It" and "Lights Out". Who is he?

Answer: Pete Way

Pete Way is a founding member of UFO, with whom he found fame. He left the band in 1982 and formed Fastway with Fast Eddie Clarke, who'd just left Motorhead. His next act was Waysted who recorded a few albums, but their success was limited. He rejoined UFO in 1992, left in 2004, and rejoined again in 2005. He's also produced other bands' albums, such as Twisted Sister's "Under The Blade" and The Cokney Rejects' "The Wild Ones".

UFO didn't really take off until Michael Schenker joined and they recorded their third studio album, "Phenomenon", in 1974. They went from strength to strength through the 1970s, releasing a string of great albums and touring the world. Always known for their heavy drinking, things rose to a head in 1978 when Schenker left, and the golden age was over. They carried on and made some good records, but also a lot of bad ones.
7. Pete Shelley formed this band with Howard Devoto in 1975 in Manchester. "Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)?", "What Do I Get?" and "Why Can't I Touch It?" were all singles that he had a hand in writing. What's the band?

Answer: The Buzzcocks

The Buzzcocks' influence is huge. Apart from being a forerunner of the punk movement, they have been cited as an influence on the so-called "Madchester" indie scene. Shelley's slant for songs of disappointment and angst, albeit peppered with deep irony, wit and self-deprecation, became the signature of the band. He asked a lot of questions, and gave a few answers to the sad and lonely.

He's also released solo work, most interestingly the record "Sky Yen" that was released in 1980, despite being recorded in 1974. It's heavily influenced by krautrock, once again showing is affinity with the Madchester sound that many years later delved into krautrock to gather material to turn into pop music.

The Buzzcocks reformed in the late 1980s and have continued touring since. Shelley got an all-star cast together to rerecord "Ever Fallen In Love" when long-term fan Radio One DJ John Peel died in 2005. He managed to rustle up folk like Roger Daltrey, David Gilmour, Peter Hook and Robert Plant for the tribute.
8. Peter Blegvad performed alongside Anthony Moore and Dagmar Krause in this quirky band whose albums include "Sort Of", "Casablanca Moon", and "Ça Va". Who are these nutters?

Answer: Slapp Happy

Peter Blegvad formed Slapp Happy with Anthony Moore and Dagmar Krause in 1972 in Germany. Guitarist Blegvad is American, Moore English and singer Krause German. Their stuff is pretty odd, but not difficult listening.

Krautrockers Faust were involved in debut album "Sort Of" and follow-up "Casablanca Moon". The latter wasn't released at the time as the record label deemed it too weird. It was rerecorded and released on a different label. The original version did not come out for many years, and then under the title "Acnalbasac Noom".

They split up in the mid-1970s, but have reformed since.
9. Vocalist Peter Bywaters gave his name to this British punk band's moniker. They released albums such as "Mating Sounds of South American Frogs", "Soberphobia" and "Supermodels". Who are they?

Answer: Peter and the Test Tube Babies

Peter and the Test Tube Babies were called The Cornflakes, followed by a nameless period. When a pub landlord billed them as Peter and The Packet Of Peanuts they decided they had to get a proper name. It was 1978 and the first test tube baby, Louise Brown, was big in the news. A punter suggested Pete write a song about the topic, and they had their name.

The band are still going today. They've always been "shambolic" (Ian Glasper, "Burning Britain"), but a lot of fun. Their studio albums are actually surprisingly good, despite the silly lyrics.
10. Pete Murphy was vocalist in a British band who took their name from a school of art and design that's now synonymous with a style and philosophy of art, design and architecture. What is the name of the band?

Answer: Bauhaus

Bauhaus are credited with giving birth to the goth rock movement, and Pete Murphy is often referred to as the Godfather of goth. Bauhaus released four albums before breaking up in 1983, and one when they reformed in 2008.

Pete Murphy's solo career has covered many genres and styles, and he has even alienated long-term fans with his desire to experiment. He's never really hit the big time, but has kept a hardcore following. He's also engaged the casual, curious listener who is always ready to have a listen to what's he's up to.
