Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the Beatles song "Everybody's Got Something to Hide, Except Me and my Monkey", what does this monkey represent?

Answer: Yoko Ono

The song is about how a lot of people reacted negatively to the Lennon/Ono courtship (eg, the other Beatles, the press, Cynthia Lennon ...). Lennon is supposed to have claimed the following: "Everybody seemed to be paranoid except for us two, who were in the glow of love." The song is built around a few things that were said by Lennon's guru, the Maharishi, though the 'monkey part' was entirely Lennon's doing. What Ono thought about being referred to as a monkey, is not known.
2. Which sixties band sang these lyrics: "I think I'm sophisticated. 'Cos I'm living my life like a good homosapien. But all around me everybody's multiplying. Till they're walking round like flies man. So I'm no better than the animals sitting in their cages in the zoo man. 'Cos compared to the flowers and the birds and the trees, I am an ape man.

Answer: The Kinks

The Kinks frontman Ray Davies is often described as somewhat of a chronicler of the times. Especially, the lyrics he wrote in the 60s are regarded as rather pointy examples of a writer with his finger on the pulse of what was going on. Regardless of that, in 1970 he described his desire to leave it all behind and go swing from tree to tree and live like an "Ape Man".
3. The Specials recorded a pretty good version of the song "Monkey Man" for their debut album. Who recorded the original, though?

Answer: Toots and the Maytals

The Specials added the words "This one's for the bouncers" to the intro. A little dig at security people preventing 'the kids' from dancing.
4. Who recorded the legendary garagerock classic "Go Go Gorilla"?

Answer: The Shandells

The Shandells were first known as The Mahakas, a surf band from Alabama. Then they changed their name to The Shandells, for this amazing slice of primitive 60s rock, inspired by names like The Standells, The Chantells etc. Later they wanted to appear more sophisticated and turned into The Shandells, Inc.

However, they've got no ties at all with the Shondells, Tommy James' band. In the Wikipedia page for Tommy James (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_James) it is wrongly noted that in 2006 "Finnish garage rock trio The Micragirls included a cover of one of The Shondells' lesser-known recordings 'Go Go Gorilla' on their LP 'Feeling Dizzy Honey'." This is a blatant mistake, typical of Wikipedia's "anyone-can-claim-anything"-approach.
5. You probably know that Gorillaz is a project of Damon Albarn, singer with British band Blur. Do you know, however, the name of the illustrator who brings the Gorillaz to life?

Answer: Jamie Hewlett

Jamie Hewlett first became famous for creating "Tank Girl", with writer Alan Martin.
Peter Bagge is the creator of the legendary "Hate" comic, one of the best series ever. Gibert Hernandez, or Beto, is one of the Hernandez brothers. Together with Jaime and Mario he created "Love & Rockets". On his own he did the infamous comic "Birdland". John McCrea is not the singer with the band Cake, but a Belfast born comics illustrator who worked on DC comics' "The Demon" and "The Hitman" with writer Garth Ennis.
6. Japanese fashion designer Tomoaki "Nigo" Nagao started the Bathing Ape (or Bape) clothing company in 1993. In 1997 he branched out into music, releasing one album ("Ape Sounds") under the Nigo moniker. Who was his ally/musical collaborator?

Answer: James Lavelle (UNKLE)

"Ape Sounds" appeared on Lavelle's Mo'Wax label. Just like on UNKLE's albums a few special guests appeared: Mike D, Money Mark, Cornelius, Ben Lee, DJ Kudo.
7. Who likes to be called 'King Monkey'? One of his albums is called "Unfinished Monkey Business" and one of his song titles reads 'Dolphins Were Monkeys'.

Answer: Ian Brown (ex-Stone Roses)

The title was allegedly bestowed upon him by Dodgy drummer Mathew Priest, because of the way he walks. Brown took to the name however, calling his first solo album "Unfinished Monkey Business" (1998). He further elaborated on the theme with the song 'Dolphins Were Monkeys', from his album "Golden Greats" (2005).
8. Which band deemed itself "Very Ape"?

Answer: Nirvana

"Very Ape" is a rather short track on Nirvana's third album "In Utero" (1993). It's widely assumed to be about the so-called 'hicks' Kurt Cobain grew up with in Aberdeen, Washington. Some say it's (partially) about his father. It could, however, also be about the way he perceived humans in general.
9. Which techno dj released the single "Monkey Say, Monkey Do"?

Answer: Westbam

Westbam's name is a tribute to hiphop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa. The German dj wanted to be known as the 'WESTphalia BAMbaataa", see. Westphalia is the region in Germany he comes from, known as Westfalen in German.
10. Which dub- and reggae-pioneer often refers to apes, super or not?

Answer: Lee Perry

At a certain point 'slightly unhinged' producer Lee 'Scratch' Perry started to refer to himself as 'Ape', releasing albums such as "Scratch the Super Ape" (1976) and "Return of the Super Ape" (1978). Later he returned to the theme with "Super Ape inna Jungle" (1995), his excursion into Jungle music with Mad Professor.
