Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In track and field, who was the first man to run the 100 metres under 10 seconds, winning the gold medal at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, by completing the race in a then world record time of 9.95 seconds?

Answer: Jim Hines

The American athlete's record time stood until 1983 when Calvin Smith lowered the record to 9.93 seconds at Colorado Springs. Jim Hines claimed a second gold medal at the 1968 Olympic Games as part of the American 4x100m relay squad that won the title.
2. Which of the following rules is not true for the game of field polo?

Answer: Each team consists of 6 players

A polo team consists of four players, except in indoor polo (arena polo) in which teams are made up of three players. During halftime, spectators are invited on to the field of play to help repair the ground, in a tradition called "divot stomping". Polo was played at the 1900 Olympic Games in Paris.
3. In golf, what avian term is given to the unlikely event of a hole being played four strokes under par?

Answer: Condor

To achieve a condor, a golfer must score an ace in a par 5 hole, or else complete a par 6 in just two shots. However, condors also known as triple-eagles have been recorded but are extremely rare. An even more unlikely occurrence is an ostrich, whereby a hole is completed no less than 5 shots under par. This would require holing a par 6 in one shot.
4. In which sport did Pieter van den Hoogenband of the Netherlands pick up 2 golds and 2 bronze medals at the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000?

Answer: Swimming

His gold medal triumphs came in the 100m and 200m freestyle events. "The Flying Dutchman" went on to win another gold medal as well as two more silvers at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. In 2000, van den Hoogenband upset the home crowd when he beat Ian Thorpe to the gold medal in the 200m freestyle at the Sydney Olympics.
5. In which sport can a bout be referred to as a barrage?

Answer: Fencing

In fencing, a barrage is a first-hit contest between two opponents who have tied in the number of bouts won, with the victor being the fencer who makes the first hit.
6. Which country won the women's World Championships in ice hockey on eight occasions from 1990-2004?

Answer: Canada

On each of those eight occasions, it was the United States who finished runners-up to their North American neighbours.
7. In which country is the Sepang Grand Prix racing circuit?

Answer: Malaysia

The Malaysian Grand Prix, held at Sepang was included in the Formula 1 World Championships for the first time in 1999.
8. The Expedite Rule is a feature of which sport, the aim of which is to ensure that there is not an inordinate amount of time between points?

Answer: Table Tennis

The expedite rule is used in table tennis for long matches, and means that the point must be won within a certain amount of strikes or else the receiver is awarded the point. Astonishingly, in the World Championships in 1936, the first point in a match between Poland and Romania lasted over two hours, evidence that such a rule is necessary.

The word expedite means to speed up the progress of something so that it can be executed more quickly.
9. What is featured at the top of the Ryder Cup Trophy, awarded in professional golf to the victorious team in a continental match between U.S.A. and Europe which is held biennially?

Answer: Figure of a golfer

The golfer featured is Abe Mitchell, a friend of the trophy's commissioner Samuel Ryder. Mitchell himself played in three Ryder Cups but missed the inaugural tournament due to illness when he was supposed to captain the Great Britain team (the event was a match between U.S.A. and Great Britain until 1979 when it was expanded to include continental Europe).

The elephant is for the Calcutta Cup, a rugby match played between England and Scotland which features an elephant on the design. A pineapple is featured on the top of the Wimbledon Men's Singles Trophy in tennis.
10. Which Austrian skier won 4 consecutive men's downhill world titles from 1975-1978, and also won gold at the 1976 Innsbruck Olympic Games in the downhill event.

Answer: Franz Klammer

After retiring from skiing in 1985, Klammer went on to compete in auto racing and became Touring Car Champion of Austria.
