At the trail of 418 runs, India managed to score only 328 runs. This was due to very low scoring of the batsmen. Only Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni and Irfan Pathan contributed good runs to the team. The Ganguly-Dhoni partnership lasted only for a 110 runs, and the partnership was broken by Dale Steyn at 235-5.

After that only The Pathan-Dhoni partnership gave 33 runs. But at the final result of the match, India lost by an innings and 90 runs.

The winning runs was a boundary hit by Rahul Dravid, which made the series draw 1-1 because the first match was drawn due to high scores in the first innings which took four days.

As the Chennai pitch was good for batting, that match ended in a draw. The Kanpur match also saved India's position. Now India are still balanced. India is ranked #2 in the ICC (International Cricket Council) rankings.
