Kaye originated Zach in May of 2004 when he met Erica at his casino while she resided there as a showgirl by the name of "Desiree DuBois." Prior to "AMC", Kaye was on the ABC soap operas, "One Life to Live" and "Port Charles." While Kaye was on "Port Charles", he received Daytime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2003 and 2004.

In 2003, he lost to Maurice Benard of "General Hospital" and to Anthony Geary of "General Hospital" in 2004. In 2006, he got a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for "All My Children" but lost, again, to Anthony Geary of "General Hospital."

All of the above people participated in Zach's murder mystery game except for Edmund. Edmund was at the casino at the time Zach hosted the game but was not a participant. Zach launched the game to find out more about the night his brother, Michael Cambias, was murdered.

Other participants included Maria Santos Grey, Adam Chandler, David Hayward, Jack Montgomery, Erica Kane, Greenlee Smythe, Ryan Lavery, and Ethan Ramsey.

Zach has threatened to kill Ryan before. They have not always been close since Zach is Michael Cambias' brother and Michael hurt many people that Ryan loves. Zach and Ryan have a like and dislike relationship that has, at times, turned into hatred for each other. Another reason for their dislike over the years has been greatly influenced over how both feel about Kendall.

Zach and Kendall shared a kiss on New Year's of 2005 and started 2006 with many fireworks. They remarried in May of 2006 on a yacht. Zach and Kendall are one of the show's most popular supercouples of the more recent years.

Josh took money from Cambias Industries in September of 2008 since he needed cash for some reason. He came to Kendall about this and she arranged for Josh to skip town. Josh left Pine Valley and Zach found out Kendall helped arrange for him to leave. This caused a small rift in Zach and Kendall's relationship. Josh came back in January of 2009 and, in a shootout with Zach, he died.

His heart was donated to Kendall since she needed a new heart.

Zach confessed to Edmund's murder and he was arrested. A couple of weeks later, it was revealed that Jonathan Lavery was actually Edmund's killer. The charges against Zach were dismissed. In an explosion, Jonathan was presumed dead but turned up alive about four months later when Erin Lavery claimed she found Jonathan and nursed him back to health at her home in Canada. We found out that Jonathan suffered from a brain tumor that caused him to be violent.

All of the above had motive to kill Greg but it was Dixie that was on trial. As with any soap opera murder mystery, the person (or persons) put on trial is/are never the one{s} that actually committed the murder. Greg's murderer turned out to be Tad. Tad buried Greg alive in hopes Greg would tell him where his daughter, Kate, was located. Greg refused to tell Tad and he wound up dead.

Zach wanted to get revenge on Greenlee since she nearly killed Spike Lavery. He concocted a scheme with JR in which he and JR would convince Greenlee there were still viable eggs of hers out there for her to use to get pregnant. In the Fall of 2005, Zach pulled the power in Pine Valley and this caused all of Greenlee's eggs at Greg Madden's clinic to no longer be viable. Zach and JR told Greenlee that, in order to find out where the eggs were, she had to sign over her shares in Fusion (there were no viable eggs left of Greenlee's). Greenlee saw through Zach and JR's scheme and did not sign over her shares.

Zach has been seen, on many occasions, wearing a Detroit Red Wings jersey. He has said, many times, that they are his favorite hockey team. In real life, Zach's portrayer, Thorsten Kaye, is also a die-hard Red Wings fan. A fan of Kaye's sent him an autographed Detroit Red Wings jersey and he hung it up in his dressing room.

It was at the murder mystery game that Zach hosted to raise money for the Miranda Montgomery Center that he told Maria what his real identity was. This was, also, where he told her why he orchestrated the game. A couple of months later, Zach held a meeting at Ryan's penthouse where he announced his true identity to many other people. Among these people were Erica Kane, Bianca Montgomery, Kendall Hart, and Jack Montgomery.
