Answer: Tell him where on a map they are

In the opening scene, a man comes back through the snow after he has hunted for some rabbits. When he sees his wife, he knows that someone else is in the house. Joel emerges and demands that the man tell him where they are located on a map. Joel tells him that it better be the same spot that his wife pointed to on the map as well.

The man mentions that they prefer to be off the grid and after he shows them their location, he tells Joel and Ellie to not cross a certain river.

Answer: Sheep rancher

Joel plays along and tells Ellie that if indeed her blood can be used to develop a vaccine and life returns to normal, he wants to be a sheep rancher. Taking a jab at Ellie, he tells her that sheep are quiet and do as they are told.

Answer: Sally Ride

After Joel says that he would be a sheep rancher if he could do what he wanted, Ellie says that she dreams of going into space. In the quarantine zone, Ellie read lots of books about space and her favorite astronaut is Sally Ride. Interestingly, Joel actually guesses correctly that Sally Ride is Ellie's favorite astronaut.

Sally Ride was born in Los Angeles in 1951. She became a member of NASA in 1978 and in 1983 she became the first American woman and youngest American (32) to fly in space. Ride spent more than 300 hours in space and after her time in NASA she worked as a physicist and professor. In 2012, Sally Ride died from pancreatic cancer.

Answer: Dressing

Joel tells Ellie that shooting is the easy part and dressing is the difficult part. Ellie asks him what dressing is and in classic and terse Joel fashion he tells her "taking out an animal's guts". Dressing an animal by removing its organs helps cool down the animal's body which helps prevent its meat from spoiling.

Answer: A dog sniffs them.

Joel and Ellie are confronted by a group of about eight people on horseback with guns. A man from the group sends a dog out to them and says that if they are infected the dog will know and attack them. Joel is visibly nervous because he thinks that the dog may smell Ellie and think that she is actively infected. Luckily, the dog doesn't determine that Ellie is infected and instead is pet by Ellie.

Answer: Jackson

The settlement of Jackson is feared by outsiders like the couple that Joel met because they have strict rules about who they let in and what people must do inside. Joel tells Maria that their ways sound like communism and she agrees. Jackson is located in the state of Wyoming and Joel reunites with his brother Tommy while he is there.

Answer: They both lost a child after the outbreak.

Ellie notices that on a chalkboard on a wall in Maria's home there are two names with dates. When she notices that the names (Sarah and Kevin) have dates indicating they died young, Ellie assumes that Sarah and Kevin were both Maria's deceased children. Maria corrects Ellie telling her that Kevin was her deceased son and Sarah was Joel's deceased daughter. Both of them died shortly after Outbreak Day in September 2003. Ellie had known that Joel had a daughter that died but he didn't share with Ellie the details.

Answer: Colorado

Tommy describes to Joel that further west it is too dangerous and that there is a population of Fireflies at the University of Eastern Colorado. This is not a university in real life but it is modeled after Colorado State University. Ellie makes a comment when they enter the university's grounds about the team's mascot being bighorn sheep.

Answer: Monkeys

Joel finds it odd that there are no guards at the guard station. Ellie then notices a bunch of monkeys bouncing around and she asks Joel if they are real monkeys since she's never seen one. A popular moment from the video game "The Last of Us" that was not shown in the tv adaptation was when the player explores the grounds of the university and comes in contact with a giraffe.

Answer: He has heart pain.

Joel's heart pain seems to be triggered when he has strong emotions or physical exertion. It is shown when he sees a woman that looks like his deceased daughter and another time when he plans to take Ellie to a university but doesn't think he is physically up for it. Joel tries to have his brother Tommy take Ellie on the journey but when given the option Ellie tells them she wants to go with Joel.

As if his heart problems weren't enough, Joel gets stabbed in the stomach at the end of the episode.
