Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The fourth of its series. Premiered on the Dreamcast in 2000. Name refers to a virus.

Answer: Resident Evil: Code Veronica

The previous games in the series had been issued on the Playstation, but 'Code: Veronica' was issued initially on the Dreamcast. Classed as a survival horror game it features a brother and sister who, separately, battle zombies and other monsters while solving puzzles. Players play both characters.

Claire, the sister, has teamed up with Steve, an inmate in the experimental station in which they are trapped. He is eventually infected with the virus, but the siblings are reunited and manage to escape.
2. Role playing game set partly on an airship. Main character named Vyse.

Answer: Skies of Arcadia

The airship in the question might have given you a clue to the correct answer. The character Vyse is an air pirate, a type of Robin Hood, who is attempting to prevent a takeover of the world by Empress Teodora. The world in question is called Arcadia, depicted as a group of six independent floating 'islands'.

Gameplay is a mixture of puzzle solving and role playing, and Vyse is able to meet and recruit others to his cause.
3. Virtual pet raising game of a hybrid creature.

Answer: Seaman

To start the game, the player has to set up an aquarium to the right temperature and make sure the oxygen levels are right before dropping an egg in to start the process of growing the creature - the Seaman of the title. It grows through various stages with success coming when the player gets it to the stage of being able to be released into the wild.

The 'pet' resembles a hybrid between a human and frog, and learns to talk, asking questions of the player, giving advice based on what it has learned. It also tends to insult the player during its growth although does express thanks when the game is completed and it is released.
4. First in a series, dating from 1999. Ryo Hazuki seeks revenge for the murder of his father.

Answer: Shenmue

Only the first two games in the series were issued by Sega, with subsequent games created for the PlayStation or Windows. All the games available between 1999 and 2019, including a short-lived version for mobile phones, were created by Yu Suzuki.

The first game, described as an action-adventure, is set in Japan and Hong Kong as Ryo (who witnessed his father's death) attempts to recover the dragon mirror, the artefact which was stolen from his father and cost him his life. The game was known for its detail, with interactive objects, changes in time and weather, and mini games available for play.
5. Based on a film series directed by Sam Raimi. The hero has good and bad versions.

Answer: Evil Dead: Hail to the King

The first video game based on the film was called 'The Evil Dead' and came out in 1984, long before the Dreamcast was available. The game in the question was issued in 2000 for the Dreamcast, PlayStation and Microsoft Windows.

Like the films, the game is classed in the horror genre and the main character is still Ash Williams. In this game he has an evil twin named Bad Ash who he has to fight against. Ash also has to rescue his girlfriend, Jenny, by locating lost pages of the Necronomicon - the Book of the Dead. The game is just one of several based on the films.
6. First internet based role playing game created specifically for game consoles. Team with other players to explore the planet called Ragol.

Answer: Phantasy Star Online

The online version was developed from Sega's original game series which began in 1987 with numerous additional titles subsequently. The online version was a new development at the time with players able to interact with others online to form teams of up to four people.

The player(s) could customise their characters before being taken to a spaceship named Pioneer 2 which acts as their base. They can visit Ragol where they fight against enemies and explore the different areas - these include forests and mines. Although Sega ended its support for the game and subsequent versions by 2010, the games are still being played due to devoted players who have created their own servers to support them.
7. Issued in 2000. Based on real world mixed martial arts company.

Answer: Ultimate Fighting Championship

This was the first video game to use real life fighters from the UFC, with the Dreamcast version being the forerunner, quickly followed by similar games for the PlayStation and Game Boy Color.

Among the fighters featured were Chuck Liddell, Tsuyoshi Kosaka and Tito Ortiz although there were numerous others. Overall, the Dreamcast version was the most favourably received with the gameplay being described in the video game magazine 'Next Generation' as 'lifelike and exciting'.
8. Online version of arcade game. Only issued in North America. Players choose an armoured vehicle to fight in.

Answer: Alien Front Online

The online version of this game was released only in North America, with players able to interact with others online. Teams of up to four players could battle against other teams in arena battles. They could pick one of three types of vehicle, each of which had different attributes. The battles ended after a set time with the winners being the team which had caused most losses to the opponents.

Like the other online game in the quiz, 'Alien Front Online' is still available in the 2020s via private servers.
9. Action game. Huggy Bear leads a rebellion against his owner. Resemblance to Tom Hanks film.

Answer: Toy Commander

This action game has a plot which does sound similar to the original 'Toy Story' film. A boy receives new toys for Christmas presents which consist of various army vehicles, leading him to neglect his earlier favourites. The original toys, led by a teddy bear named Huggy Bear, decide to get rid of the usurpers.

The action takes place in a house, with battles in different rooms and games ranging from racing to those needing dexterity. The company which created it went out of business soon after finishing the game and there were no sequels.
10. One of Dreamcast's launch titles. Compete on the Shuto Expressway.

Answer: Tokyo Xtreme Racer

This was the first of two titles which appeared on the Dreamcast, with 'Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2' following in 2000. Later games were issued on the PlayStation2.

The title was different depending upon where you lived - the title in the answer was that used in America while in Japan it was known as 'Shutok? Battle' and it was 'Tokyo Highway Challenge' in Europe. As you'd expect from these titles, it was a car racing game with players competing to win money and use it to upgrade their vehicles.
