Question 5 of 10

Question 6 of 10
6. Feraligatr started off its time in this game as a toothless joke in PvP, with no hope for viability anywhere. This changed in a huge way in 2022, as Feraligatr received access to a random move that you wouldn't think would help on paper, but made all the difference in the world in practice. What new Fast move did Feraligatr get here? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Kingdra has always been a solid, but not too great of a presence in PvP. This changed in 2022 when it was given access to a really weird but powerful move for PvP. What move did it get here? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Fan favorite Greninja found itself being a fairly mediocre Pokemon, even after getting Hydro Cannon. However, in 2023, it would be a new Fast move option that bolstered Greninja's viability considerably. What Fast move? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Mega Slowbro uniquely can buff both Water and Psychic types courtesy of its typing. However, it needs its Community Day move in order to be useful as a Water attacker. What is Slowbro's Community Day move? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Once Kyogre and Hydro Cannon were released, it put the majority of the game's Water types behind the eight ball. Kingler and Crawdaunt became exceptions to this in 2020, when a new move was created that fit them like a glove. What move is this? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Kyogre is likely one of the most well-known, established Water types in the entire game. There was a strange controversy surrounding its Fast move. As a result, Kyogre only would ever get one single Fast move. What move?

Answer: Waterfall

Before Kyogre was released, Niantic wanted to give it access to Dragon Tail for a Fast move. However, this was struck down by Game Freak, for the reason that Kyogre cannot learn Dragon Tail in the mainline games. Niantic, in obeisance of the game's IP owner, removed Dragon Tail from Kyogre, kept it on Groudon, and never gave Kyogre another Fast move.

That said, not getting another Fast move is definitely for the better. Waterfall is the best Fast move Kyogre could've asked for, and getting it guaranteed without the need of a TM can be quite helpful for TM-starved trainers.
2. Palkia-Origin form is well-known for offering exclusive utility courtesy of its exclusive, signature move Spacial Rend. Spacial Rend isn't just extremely useful in raids, it's useful outside of them as well. When using Spacial Rend outside of combat, what happens?

Answer: The player sees things at a greater range

Dialga-Origin's Roar of Time is what pauses time sensitive consumables such as Stardust Pieces or Lucky Eggs. Palkia-O's Spacial Rend will increase the range at which the player can spot wild Pokemon, spin Pokestops or access Gyms. The real-world distance of this is roughly 200 feet.

The effect lasts for eight minutes at a time, and costs five thousand stardust to go with ten Palkia candies to activate.
3. Like Primal Groudon, Primal Kyogre buffs its teammates simply by existing on the team, even if it never directly participates in combat. Primal Kyogre can obviously extend this benefit to fellow Water types, but not just them- what two other types benefit from the blue whale's presence?

Answer: Bug and Electric

Much like how Rainy weather boosts Water, Bug and Electric, Primal Kyogre's presence on a team buffs fellow Water types and any Bug or Electric types on the team. This can make Primal Kyogre useful even in moments when Water is not needed- a strategy consisting of five Electric types such as Raikou, and then a Primal Kyogre in the back can be incredibly effective when attacking an Electric-weak threat.
4. Lugia is one of many cover legendaries whose face can show up in raids. Trainers eager to slay it may bring legions of Tyranitar, Houndoom or maybe Krookodile, but they'd be running the risk of running into a Lugia with this Water type move. What move?

Answer: Hydro Pump

Hydro Pump doesn't fire often, but when it does, it's both hard-hitting and blindingly fast. It is exceedingly difficult to dodge when the trainer doesn't see it coming, so until the trainer can confirm that the Lugia doesn't have a Hydro Pump, they should handle it cautiously and be prepared to dodge on a whim.
5. Poliwrath is an ordinarily useless Water type, but it has a collection of random benefits that can come together to make it a perfect counter to one important Pokemon, a psuedo legendary at that. Which of the following cannot hit Poliwrath even neutrally with its moves?

Answer: Tyranitar

Every single one of Tyranitar's moves, even legacy Smack Down, is resisted by Poliwrath. Poliwrath's access to Rock Smash and Dynamic Punch gives it the ability to hit Tyranitar back for 4x damage consistently, making it a great counter to the terrifying Johto psuedo-legendary.

Answer: Shadow Claw

Shadow Claw is arguably the best move in all of PvP, and Feraligatr had all of the tools needed for it to succeed. It generates energy quickly, letting Feraligatr fire off frequent Hydro Cannons, and it deals decent damage while having great neutral coverage. Anyone aiming to use Feraligatr in PvP, regardless of the setting, must be sure to equip it with Shadow Claw.
7. Kingdra has always been a solid, but not too great of a presence in PvP. This changed in 2022 when it was given access to a really weird but powerful move for PvP. What move did it get here?

Answer: Octazooka

Octazooka is fairly weak as far as damage output goes, but it's quite cheap and has a 50% chance to halve the opponent's Attack upon use. This gives Kingdra some interesting, rarely sought utility that can be very useful.
8. Fan favorite Greninja found itself being a fairly mediocre Pokemon, even after getting Hydro Cannon. However, in 2023, it would be a new Fast move option that bolstered Greninja's viability considerably. What Fast move?

Answer: Warer Shuriken

Water Shuriken is an extremely fast Fast move that also does decent damage. It makes Greninja out into a speedy, powerful, dodge happy Water type with a niche in both raids and PvP.
9. Mega Slowbro uniquely can buff both Water and Psychic types courtesy of its typing. However, it needs its Community Day move in order to be useful as a Water attacker. What is Slowbro's Community Day move?

Answer: Surf

Surf is a fairly modest two-barred attack without any particularly strong or weak parameters; a well rounded move at that. Mega Slowbro's alternative is the weak and slow Water Pulse, which is not viable.
10. Once Kyogre and Hydro Cannon were released, it put the majority of the game's Water types behind the eight ball. Kingler and Crawdaunt became exceptions to this in 2020, when a new move was created that fit them like a glove. What move is this?

Answer: Crabhammer

Crabhammer is a powerful two-barred move that is also reasonably fast. It is an excellent Charged move that fits the crabby Kingler and Crawdaunt very well. It would also later be given to other random Pokemon, like Crabominable, who became decent users of the move themselves.
