Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Newfoundland and Labrador's flower is a carnivorous plant. This plant is found in bogs and marshlands, and likes insects for dinner. What is the plant's name?

Answer: Pitcher Plant

The Pitcher Plant was named Newfoundland's flower in 1954. It has one reddish wine coloured flower, with hollow pitcher shape leaves that collect dew and water, and hopefully insects which then are trapped and drown, and the plant feeds off them. Newfie Screech is a alcoholic drink.
2. The pilgrims that landed at Plymouth Rock would know the answer to this one. What would be the name of Nova Scotia's provincial flower?

Answer: Mayflower

The Mayflower was named the flower of Nova Scotia in 1906. It is pink in colour, blooming in the spring. Quite a popular flower, it has been on Nova Scotia coins, stamps, and on militia badges. It grows all along the eastern coast. The pilgrim's ship was called the Mayflower, and they named the pink flowers growing at their settlement after their ship.
3. The Lady's Slipper is the flower of Canada's smallest province. Which province would this be? Anne would know!

Answer: Prince Edward Island

I think Anne of Green Gables would know this. How did you do? Prince Edward Island is the smallest province or territory at roughly 2,184 square miles, a bit smaller than the size of the state of Delaware, USA. The Lady's Slipper gets its name from the flower's petals which form a sort of pouch that looks like a slipper.

It grows in wet and shady woodlands. The Lady's Slipper was made the provincial flower in 1947.
4. A violet is the New Brunswick flower. The artist formally known as Prince might like this one! But which flower is it?

Answer: Purple violet

The purple violet flowers from May to July. The flowers have been used for jams and syrups, it's supposed to be good for your digestive system and great for coughs. At the request of New Brunswick Women's Institute, the flower was adopted as provincial symbol in 1936. The artist known as Prince (and by several other names) once did a song called 'Purple Rain'. So maybe it wasn't the greatest clue?
5. Ah, Quebec, La Belle Province! Could you tell me the name of the provincial flower of the province of Quebec please?

Answer: Blue Flag Iris

The Quebec flower for almost 40 years was the Madonna lily, but it was not a native plant to Quebec. In 1999 it was changed to the Blue Flag Iris, which grows throughout the province. I would have put the Madonna Lily in here as a answer choice but as there are still some old (and new!) web sites listing it as the provincial flower, I didn't want any confusion!
6. Ontario's provincial flower has three petals and three leaves and three of the answers listed here are incorrect! What is the correct one?

Answer: White Trillium

The White Trillium was adopted as Ontario's flower in 1937. It can be found in forests and woody areas of the province in spring. It has three white petals, and three leaves, and the flower turns a bit pink as it ages. Tri means three, threefold, thrice. Did I fool you with Trinitrotoluene, which covers the Tri or three part, but is better knows as TNT, a explosive compound?.
7. It is known by several other names, and is also the state flower of South Dakota, USA, but what does the prairie province of Manitoba call its official flower?

Answer: Prairie Crocus

The Prairie Crocus is an early spring bloomer and was chosen as Manitoba's flower in 1906. It is known by several other names, including pasque flower, prairie smoke and windflower. It will start growing as soon as the snow melts, with blueish or purple flowers.

It is not really a crocus, but belongs to the buttercup family, and likes hot dry places. It is called the American Pasque Flower in South Dakota, where it is also the state flower, but it is the same plant.
8. The Western Red Lily, or Prairie Lily is the flower of choice for which landlocked prairie province?

Answer: Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan! It is one of two landlocked provinces, the other one being Alberta. The Western Red Lily or commonly know as just the Prairie Lily is actually a protected flower. The flower has bright red blossoms. It grows in lightly wooded areas and damp meadows, and was adopted as Saskatchewan's flower in 1941.
9. You may have bought your date a dozen red ones from the florist. With that hint, what's the official flower of Alberta?

Answer: Wild Rose

The Wild Rose grows throughout Alberta. It is pink, with prickly branches, and it grows a berry know as rosehip, that some people use to make tea and jam. The berry is also thought to help with the common cold, and infections. The Rose was selected by the children of Alberta in 1930 as the official flower.
10. The Pacific Dogwood is the floral emblem of which ocean-touched province, once called New Caledonia?

Answer: British Columbia

Way back in the fur trading days British Columbia was called New Caledonia. The Pacific Dogwood was named the provincial flower in 1956 and is actually a tree that in some areas can grow up to 40 feet! It grows clusters of white flowers that produce red berries in the fall. It is illegal to dig up or cut one down.
11. This plant is usually the first to sprout up after a forest fire in the Yukon. With that in mind you should have no problem naming it!

Answer: Fireweed

Yukon chose the Fireweed as its floral emblem in 1957. The Fireweed is a tall plant than can grow up to seven feet tall, with many dark pink to magenta flowers. It is called Fireweed because it is one of the first plants to grow after a fire.
12. The Mountain Avens is the official flower of which northern Canadian Territory?

Answer: Northwest Territories

The Mountain Avens was named the Northwest Territories flower in 1957. It has white petals and a yellow centre. It grows in rocky or gravelly ground in the central and eastern Arctic region. When the Northwest Territories was split in 1999 to create Nunavut, they kept the flower, and Nunavut picked their own floral emblem.
13. The official flower of Canada's newest territory, Nunavut, is the Purple Saxifrage.

Answer: True

Nunavut was created in 1999. The Purple Saxifrage is the official flower, it blooms shortly after the snow melts and is found throughout the Arctic region. It is dark pink or purple when it blooms with silver leaves. It is called Aupilaktunnguat in Inuktitut, the native language of Nunavut.

The Royal Canadian Mint made a gold coin with the flower on it with only 1,400 coins being minted.
14. What is the only Canadian province to have changed its official flower?

Answer: Quebec

The province of Quebec had the Madonna lily as the provincial flower for about 40 years, but it wasn't a native flower of the province. After a somewhat heated debate, in 1999 Quebec chose the Blue Flag lily, which grows throughout the province.
15. Which Canadian prairie province has its official flower on its provincial flag?

Answer: Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan's provincial flag was adopted in 1969. It shows the shield of arms in the top left hand corner, the top half is green representing the northern forests, the bottom half is yellow for the southern grain crop areas. The Western Red Lily is on the far right, overlapping both green and yellow colours.
