Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Modern Man" magazine first appeared in 1952. Which of these better-known magazines was similar to "Modern Man" in style and content?

Answer: Playboy

"Modern Man: The Adult Picture Magazine" premiered about a year before "Playboy", and featured a similar type of (by 21st century standards) very soft-core pornography, and articles about such male-attracting topics as cars and sex. While it included pictures of some well-known faces (and bodies) during its existence, it more often featured models trying to look like famous stars.
2. Between 1937 and 1975, "True" magazine offered articles about sports and adventurous activities for the discriminating male. Which of the following was NOT a regular column in "True" magazine?

Answer: Humor in Uniform

"Humor in Uniform" has been a feature of "Reader's Digest" magazine for many years. "True" did have a featured section called "This Funny Life". Starting life as "True, a Man's Magazine", the publication went through a number of name changes before it stopped publication in 1975. During the 1950s and 1960s, the magazine got involved in a lot of flying saucer speculation.

The 1962-1963 television series "GE True" was a magazine-style show based on stories from "True". It was produced and hosted by Jack Webb (remember Sgt. Joe Friday on "Dragnet"?), and a number of articles were written by Gene Rodenberry, of "Star Trek" fame.
3. "Hombre", launched in 2005, has a specialized target audience. Which of the following is it?

Answer: Latin men

"Hombre" is a bilingual (English and Spanish) magazine that tries to appeal to Latin men. It features articles about issues of interest to the Latin community, focuses its interviews on famous Latin men, and uses Latin models for most of its photos. As well as these articles designed to gain the interest of the target audience, it includes such other features as sports, fashion, music, dining, entertainment (film, television, theatre) and health.
4. "GIANT" started publication in 2004 aimed at '20-something' men interested in pop culture. In 2006, its new editor Smokey Fontaine focused it more precisely on urban music and entertainment. Which of the following artists was NOT featured on the cover of "GIANT" magazine before it closed in 2009?

Answer: Bob Hope

Originally this NYC-based magazine featured articles on a wide range of pop culture activities such as video games, celebrities and movies. The shift to more concentration on music was intended to differentiate it from other magazines on the market, but with only moderate success.

Eve graced the magazine's cover in April 2007, Rihanna in May 2007, and Beyonce in December 2008 (among others).
5. "GQ", full name "Gentleman's Quarterly", started life in 1931 as "Apparel Arts". To which women's magazine has it been most frequently compared?

Answer: Vogue

"Apparel Arts" was a men's fashion magazine for the wholesale trade, but its popularity with retail customers made the idea of expansion attractive. In 1933, "Esquire" was founded to cash in on the market. In 1957 "Apparel Arts" changed into a quarterly publication, and gained its current name.

As well as fashion and style information, it offers advice on books, movies, food, music, travel, health and fitness, sex - the whole gamut of lifestyle issues.
6. Which of these men's magazines featured the longest-running manga by a single artist between 1956 and 2011?

Answer: Asahi Geino

Manga is a Japanese comic strip and cartoon art form which dates from the 19th century, but which has experienced a major revival since World War II. Adapted for television, they are called anime. Remember "Astro Boy"?

"Asahi Geino" is a Japanese weekly magazine that was first published in 1946. In 1956 it underwent cosmetic surgery, and the first issue in the new format included the first installment of "Sennin Buraku" by Ko Kojima, which (as of 2011) is still being published in each edition. The magazine is quite sensationalist, but does include AIDS education alongside its many articles on celebrities, glamorized violence and sex.
7. Which of these titles was an English magazine targeting the 'black collar worker'?

Answer: Arena

The phrase 'black collar worker' refers to workers in the coal and oil industries. Like "GQ", "Arena" tried to have a more sophisticated approach to men's magazines than the magazines often referred to as "Lad Mags", which tend to feature scantily-clad large-breasted women.

It included articles on a wide range of topics such as food, movies, books, games, and health as well as the apparently-obligatory sex.
8. "Barracuda" was published between 1998 and 2006, although it still maintains an online version. Which of the following was NOT an area about which it regularly featured articles?

Answer: Bird calls

"Barracuda" is considered a central part of Kustom Kulture, a movement that emulates and replicates the art, fashion, hairstyles and cars associated with customized cars and motorcycles during the second half of the 20th century in the United States of America.

In 2003, a live concert to celebrate the magazine's first five years featured Hawaiian artist Don Ho along with the Tiki Goddess Burlesque Exotica.
9. It's not exactly Yin and Yang, but what was unusual about the men's magazine "Complex"?

Answer: One cover of each edition featured a male celebrity, one a female

First published in 2002, "Complex" attempted to help young men become familiar with the 'Hipster' subculture, including advice about fashionable street wear, hip hop music, graphic art (don't call it graffiti or comics), and such. Each cover features a celebrity, one male and one female. If you hold the magazine so that you are looking at the female cover, you will read articles on consumer goods and clothing; the half of the magazine behind the male celebrity cover will enlighten you about films, food, music and other lifestyle areas.
10. The British magazine "The Chap" is published six times a year, and suggests that which of the following is most likely to lead to happiness and social stability?

Answer: Wearing tweeds and brogues, and smoking a pipe

The magazine supports a return to the old ways, to dressing well (and conservatively), behaving with courtesy, nay with chivalry, and partaking of the finest of food and beverages. Does anyone else hear echoes of Oscar Wilde? The humor of this magazine owes more than a little to the tradition of Monty Python, Frye and Laurie, Cook and Moore, and the inimitable Goons.
