Safety for Kids Trivia Questions

1. One of the most important safety measures you should consider before riding a bike is wearing a special piece of equipment over your head to protect you. What is this item called?

From Quiz
Cycle

Answer: Helmet

A helmet is essential when riding a bike or another vehicle such as a motorcycle. The reason for this is because, should you fall, your head needs to be protected against any impact that could damage your brain permanently. The NHTSA suggests parents to make of the phrase "no helmet, no riding" a rule in order for children to know that it is an indispensable piece of equipment. The helmet should fit snugly on your head using the foam pads, and the chinstrap should be buckled at all times while riding. You could also use knee and elbow pads for extra safety, especially if you are riding for the first time.

2. Emily was told that she needed to apply sunscreen to her body before she went outside to play and that she needed to check the sunscreen's SPF. What in the world is SPF?

From Quiz Some Sun Safety

Answer: sun protection factor

SPF stands for "sun protection factor". It measures how well the sunscreen blocks harmful UVB rays from the sun that cause sunburn, skin damage, and skin cancer. This SPF does not measure how well the sunscreen prevents damage from UVA rays, however.

3. After handling raw meat or eggs what is the best way to clean your hands?

From Quiz Going Cooking?

Answer: wash in warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds

When preparing food, hands should be washed often in warm, soapy water. It is very important to do this for about 20 seconds after handling raw meat or eggs so that the spread of bacteria can be prevented. The use of soap is very important. Always remember that proper handwashing is effective in eliminating a large percentage of food poisoning. By the way, wiping your hands on your apron is not hygienic at all.

4. What is the right thing to do if a stranger invites you into his/her car for sweets?

From Quiz Keep Right

Answer: Scream for help and run away towards a safe place/people

You should never get into a car with a stranger. Run away as fast as possible. It is safer to travel with a group of friends than to be alone on the streets. Never try to help a stranger. Leave that to an adult.

5. Who would you normally call if a stranger offers you a lift home in their car?

From Quiz Call the Police

Answer: Police

Never, ever, EVER, accept a lift from a stranger as they could harm you. Always check with an adult first, either your parent or a teacher. If no adult is nearby, then run fast and contact the police as soon as possible. If you have time, make a note of the car details; the model and colour, and ideally the number plate as well. Get a description of the driver - male or female, young or old, blond hair or dark hair. It is amazing what you will be able to remember in a short space of time which could help the police with their investigations.

6. This word is a synonym for a bout or a contest, but it is not as fun, as when friction happens with this object, fire is started due to heat. What is this object?

From Quiz Firestarter

Answer: Match

There are "household safe" matches, which are called this way because they won't ignite unless there is strong friction involved, but you must be careful when touching them. The best thing is to let an adult handle matches, and anything fire-related that could injure you.

7. There is a very important thing we must wear when riding in a car. What is this important thing?

From Quiz Car Safety

Answer: A seatbelt

Seatbelts are very important. If you don't wear a seatbelt and the car crashes, you might get hurt very badly. Never assume that your parents are good drivers, so you won't crash. A bad driver might crash into your car and you will get hurt.

8. When playing sports, it is important to drink plenty of which liquid?

From Quiz Better Safe Than Sorry

Answer: Water

Water will keep you hydrated while you run around and have fun. By staying hydrated, your body will remain strong and remain a healthy temperature. If you become dehydrated, especially while playing sports, it can cause fatigue and headaches.

9. Emily noticed that a number was after the initials SPF and wondered whether that number meant anything. Perhaps surprisingly, what numbers do most experts recommend that your SPF be?

From Quiz Some Sun Safety

Answer: 15 or 30

Most experts recommend that the SPF be only 15 or 30. A sunscreen with an SPF of 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays, and an SPF of 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays. However, a sunscreen with an SPF of 50 provides only a minimal increase of blocking 98% of UVB rays. You might wonder why you shouldn't just go ahead and buy the 50 for more protection, even if that protection is only 1% more. Experts say that people with sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher tend to apply less of it or fail to reapply more when it is needed. For ANY sunscreen to be completely effective, a person needs to apply two tablespoons (about the size of a golf ball) to all areas of your body that are exposed to the sun and to reapply the sunscreen after two hours or after swimming or sweating. Applying only one tablespoon of sunscreen with an SPF of 30 reduces the protection from 97% to 5.5%!

10. Anna's mother has left some roasted chicken and rice for her to reheat for dinner. Which kitchen tool should she use to test if the food has reached to desired temperature?

From Quiz Going Cooking?

Answer: food thermometer

When reheating food it should be remembered that the internal temperature must be high enough to kill harmful bacteria. Use a food thermometer to make sure that the food has reached the desired temperature.

11. At the airport there are many people. Kids, what is a good rule to follow when you are around large airport crowds?

From Quiz Airport Safety for Kids

Answer: Stay close to your parents at all times.

It is very easy to get lost in a crowd and there are many situations that could be dangerous. Make sure you can see your parents and stay close to them at all times. This will make chances of you getting lost less likely and keep you safe.

12. What kind of helmet do professionals encourage you to wear when going cycling?

From Quiz Do You Know About Cycling Safety?

Answer: A colourful one, that other cyclists and drivers can see

Wearing a bright coloured helmet is recommended because other cyclists and drivers will be able to see you.

13. In your school's physics classroom your teacher allows you to experiment with magnets and iron filings. What could you use to directly protect your vision?

From Quiz Safety in the Lab!

Answer: Goggles

Goggles aren't really essential when using iron filings, but, there is nothing wrong with being cautious. In hospitals there are machines called MRI scanners and they are basically giant magnets. If you need an MRI scan and you have unknown iron filings in your eye, you could have an accident as iron is magnetic!

14. What time of the day are the sun's rays the strongest and most dangerous?

From Quiz Safety in the Sun

Answer: Late morning to mid afternoon

You should avoid spending lots of time outdoors when the sun is highest in the sky from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM (11:00AM to 3:00PM Daylight Saving Time). The sun's UV rays travel through clouds, so even on cloudy days you can get a sunburn.

15. How old must you be to get your restricted driver's license in most states of America?

From Quiz Car Safety

Answer: 16

When you are 15, and you get your learner driver's permit, then you are allowed to drive with a parent or guardian in the passenger seat.

16. A "bad guy" looks:

17. This kind of lunch meat is used to describe junk e-mail and pop-up ads.

From Quiz Internet Piracy For Kids!

Answer: spam

Spam is a brand of canned meat (spiced ham). Spam is also a word used to describe those annoying pop-up ads you get on the Internet as well as endless junk e-mail. Attempting to download video games, music and other files illegally or opening e-mails from strangers could increase the amount of spam you get on your computer.

18. When riding in a car, always wear your seatbelt. Children under age 13 should sit in the back seat and in which position?

From Quiz Better Safe Than Sorry

Answer: Sitting upright

The seatbelt works properly when you (or any passenger) are sitting up straight. If you move into another position, the seatbelt loses its efficiency and may not be able to protect you properly in an accident.

19. Who would be the best person to ask for help if you saw a friend starting to drown at sea?

From Quiz Call the Police

Answer: Lifeguard

Your first reaction may be to dive into the water to save your friend, but you need to be very careful. They may be drowning because there is a hidden undercurrent which could drag you underneath the water as well. A lifeguard is trained to save lives in the water and they have got the proper equipment to deal with an emergency. It is best if you see where the lifeguard is situated when you get to the beach, just in case you need to flag them down urgently.

20. Hospitals are very clean but also treat people that are very sick. What do many hospitals have for guests to put on their hands to prevent spreading germs?

22. A lot of things come in plastic bags. If you find a plastic bag, what is the best way to play with it?

From Quiz Stay Safe Around the House

Answer: You should never play with plastic bags

Plastic bags may look harmless, but you should never play with them. It is too easy to get trapped inside one, if it's large, and even if it is smaller, it can cover your mouth and nose so you are unable to breathe. Plastic bags are not toys!

23. What room is the best one to be in if you are sheltering from a tornado if there is no basement in the house?

From Quiz Weather Safety For Kids

Answer: Bathroom

Sheltering in a tub in the bathroom during a tornado is often recommended by weather experts. The walls and framework of bathrooms tend to be stronger than other rooms: the pipes in the walls provide extra strength, and the heavy tub gives extra support from below. The best place to shelter from a tornado is in a corner in the basement, but if there isn't a basement in your house, the tub in the bathroom is the next best place to stay safe during these storms.

24. Who would you contact if you witnessed a builder falling off a ladder?

From Quiz Call the Police

Answer: Ambulance

If someone has fallen off a ladder, it is best not to move them because they could have an injury which is not obvious. This could include a broken back or fractured skull. Call the ambulance service as they have special neck braces and back boards to transport people with potential spinal injuries safely to hospital for x-rays and further tests.

26. Why is it not a good idea to yell or talk loudly in the hospital?

From Quiz Hospital Safety for Kids

Answer: It is disrespectful to the health and safety of others.

When you visit a hospital you should never yell or talk loudly. Many patients need to rest to get well. Also, loud noises can cause chaos for the people who are trying to watch out for people's safety, such as security guards, doctors, nurses, and staff members. They need quiet so that if something does happen they can quickly respond to alarms and patients.

27. Why do you need to wear a bright cycling jacket?

From Quiz Do You Know About Cycling Safety?

Answer: To be seen by drivers and other cyclists

28. Why might a school bus be painted yellow?

From Quiz School Bus Safety

Answer: To be easily identified

Many school buses are yellow in order to make them easily identified as well as easily seen in all types of weather situations. Everybody knows which buses are school buses and are transporting children. Other drivers are more aware of the school bus when it is yellow and are more prepared for the possibility of the school bus stopping and going again.

29. Where in your home might a fire occur?

From Quiz Fire Safety in the Home

Answer: Anywhere.

Kitchen fires are common, but fires can start anywhere. Electrical wires that can spark are present in every part of your home ... even the garage and attic. But fires can also result from other sources such as combustible materials exposed to heat from the sun or lightning.
