Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We are told that too much fun in the sun can be dangerous. What are some of its harmful effects?

Answer: All of these

If you have been sunburned, you know it hurts. But did you know that your eyes can be damaged too? Also, too much heat from the sun might cause fainting, heat exhaustion or heat stroke in extreme cases. If you start to feel cold, then you are too hot.
2. What time of the day are the sun's rays the strongest and most dangerous?

Answer: Late morning to mid afternoon

You should avoid spending lots of time outdoors when the sun is highest in the sky from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM (11:00AM to 3:00PM Daylight Saving Time). The sun's UV rays travel through clouds, so even on cloudy days you can get a sunburn.
3. Which of these is one of the best ways to protect yourself from getting too much sun while outdoors?

Answer: Cover up

Take along an umbrella or tent when going to the beach. To ensure your clothes will block rays, put your hand inside and make sure you can't see it through a single layer of cloth.
4. If you plan to be in the sun for a long time, what should you rub on your skin?

Answer: Sunscreen

A minimum of SPF-15 (Sun Protection Factor) sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes before going outdoors and every 2-3 hours afterward (SPF-30+ is even better). If you're swimming, make sure it's waterproof. Don't forget your lips, ears, feet, back of the neck, and shoulders underneath swimsuit straps.
5. Even if you don't normally do so, you can get sunburn if you take certain medications.

Answer: True

Some medications, especially antibiotics and acne medications, can cause the skin to be more sensitive to UV rays. You should ask the pharmacist if they are known to cause increased sun sensitivity before going outdoors.
6. What is the meaning of UV?

Answer: Ultraviolet

Sunlight is made up of three types of invisible ultraviolet rays: UVA, UVB and UVC. UVA is the most common. UVB is less common but more dangerous. UVC is the most dangerous, but most of it is blocked by the earth's ozone layer.
7. You should also wear sunglasses to protect your eyes in sunlight. What is it important to look for when buying sunglasses for this purpose?

Answer: UV protection

Not all sunglasses are the same. Some have special UV filters to protect the eyes from sun exposure. Always choose a pair with a "100% UV protection" label.
8. Sometimes despite your best efforts, you still get sunburned. What should you do?

Answer: All of these

Usually a sunburn is not apparent until later. Sunburns hurt so a mild pain reliever may be helpful. NEVER use petroleum based products (like Vaseline) on sunburn. Also avoid products containing benzocaine which might irritate the skin. If your sunburn is very bad, you should see a doctor.
9. Is exposure to sunlight always bad for you?

Answer: No

In fact, sunlight is our best source of vitamin D. Vitamin D helps our bodies absorb calcium which gives us strong bones and teeth.
10. In order to get enough vitamin D during the summer, how much time should you spend in the sun?

Answer: Ten minutes a day most days of the week

Exposing about 15% of your skin (face, arms and hands) to sunlight for 10 minutes a day during the summer, 15-20 for spring and fall, and 30 in the winter will provide enough vitamin D for most people. You should still avoid the strongest rays of the day.
