www.sharks.com.au Cronulla can trace its history back to 1952 when a group of players banded together and formed a junior team, Cronulla-Caringbah, to play in the St George competition. That club soon proved to be one of the best in junior ranks. Cronulla entered the Sydney second division competition in 1963, and in that season, reached the grand final where it went down to Kingsford 9-7. When the NSWRL expanded the major Sydney premiership from 10 to 12 teams in 1967, the club was promoted along with Penrith, under the new name of Cronulla-Sutherland. The team changed their colours to blue, black and white (prior to this, the team originally wore brown and gold) and selected a logo reflecting their location in the Sutherland Shire - Captain Cook's ship, the Endeavour. Newly recruited Monty Porter was selected to captain the fledgling side, and despite an early victory against Eastern Suburbs, the team ran last in their inaugural season, winning only 3 games. The next season, the logo was changed to incorporate a more intimidating mentality - the shark. The new approach must have worked, as the team won 5 games and avoided taking the wooden spoon in two consecutive years. The success of St George, who at the end of 1966 had won eleven consecutive premierships was the main reason for Cronulla's. Maybe it's co-incidental that the great Dragons run ended the year Cronulla first played in the major Sydney premiership. from www.leaguechat.com and www.sharks.rleague.com Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks 1967-99 Sharks 2000-2001 Cronulla Sharks 2002-Cronulla-Sutherland Leagues Club www.sharks.com.au/leagues
