Fun Trivia
The Stanley Cup was donated to the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association by Sir Frederick A. Stanley (Lord Stanley of Preston), the Governor-General of Canada from 1888-1893.

The NHA became the NHL in November 1917. From 1918-1926, the respective NHL and PCHL champions played off for the Cup (in 1923 and 1924 the Western Canada Hockey League champion joined to make it a three-way challenge). The PCHA dissolved after the 1925-26 season, and the NHL playoffs decided the winner of the Stanley Cup thereafter.

Stanley Cup Trivia Questions

1. The Stanley Cup was named for Lord Stanley of Preston, who commissioned the making of the beautiful Victorian electroplate silver punch bowl (inlaid with gold) in 1892. Who was Lord Stanley at the time?

From Quiz
Lord Stanley's Cup - The Early Years

Answer: Governor General of Canada

Frederick Arthur Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby, KG, GCB, GCVO, PC began a career in British politics in 1865 and served in various positions before being named the Colonial Secretary, in charge of managing the Crown's colonial interests. This included Canada. Soon after, he was appointed as Governor General of Canada, a post in which he served from 1888 until 1893. While visiting Montréal during the 1889 Winter Carnival, he watched the Montreal Victorias play the Montreal Hockey Club, and became enamoured of the game of hockey. During his time in Canada he promoted the sport and his sons Arthur and Algernon even formed a new team called the Ottawa Rideau Hall Rebels.

2. After World War II, for the rest of the 1940s, and throughout all the 1950s and 1960s, three teams took turns winning the Stanley Cup with ONE exception. Which "have not" team celebrated one lone Cup victory during this twenty eight year period?

From Quiz Oddities of Lord Stanley's Tournament

Answer: Chicago Blackhawks

The post war era saw Toronto and Montreal dominate the late 1940s, Detroit and Montreal dominate the 1950s, and, (big surprise), Montreal dominate the 1960s. The fabled Canadiens garnered twelve Cups, Toronto won ten, and the Red Wings nabbed six during this golden era of the original six teams. The Blackhawks, coached by the long forgotten Rudy Pilous, made their breakthrough in 1961, beating Detroit four games to two. After that, they would suffer a forty nine year drought before finally winning another Cup in 2010. Alas, of the other two teams in the league at the time, Boston could only lose five times in the finals, and New York barely even sniffed the Cup during this time, making the finals only once and losing to Detroit in 1950.
