Confused Video Game Characters

Answer: Peach

Princess Peach is the ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom. She first appeared in the video game 'Super Mario Bros.', which was originally released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985. Outside of Japan she was initially known as Princess Toadstool but began the transition to Peach in 'Super Mario 64', which was first issued in 1996 for the Nintendo 64. The Princess has appeared in many of the video games in the main 'Mario' series as well as in spin-off games and series of games. At least in the main series, she often has the role of a 'damsel in distress' who is not necessarily helpless but is generally rescued by the plumber, Mario, with help from his brother and fellow plumber, Luigi.

The game was released initially on the Amiga, MS-DOS, Atari ST and Macintosh platforms.

3. Are you in the MOOD to play a classic video game?

From Quiz Aged Movies Anagrams

Answer: Doom

The basic idea of 'Doom' was to fight your way out of a military base, killing various monsters and possessed people along the way, while ensuring that you didn't run out of ammunition or get too badly injured or killed. The game was first released for the PC in 1993 and reached millions of players thanks to a large part of it being released as shareware. It also turned out to be ground breaking in terms of its graphics (despite being written for MS-DOS) and game play - it paved the way for both numerous other "first person shooter" games and a whole franchise of further 'Doom' releases. These included sequels, versions ported to various game consoles, books and even a film (2005's 'Doom' starring Karl Urban, Rosamund Pike and The Rock).

4. Is our SITTER still playing that silly block game? That came out in 1984. Like, how lame is that?!

From Quiz Jumbled Video Games

Answer: Tetris

'Tetris' was developed by Alexey Pajitnov while he was employed by the Academy of Science of the USSR. Released in 1984, it is still available to play on phones, tablets and the like. The name of 'Tetris' came from two sources. The blocks are all tetrominoes, i.e. composed of four squares, while the ending comes from Alexey's favourite game of tennis. It may have a simple concept, but over 170 million copies of the game have been downloaded or bought since its introduction. It was postulated that a never ending game of 'Tetris' might be possible, but when studied in a thesis by John Brzustowski, it was concluded that those dreaded 'S' and 'Z' shaped pieces would ruin the chances of a perpetual game if or when enough of them came consecutively.

The original game dates back to 1989 and features the unnamed prince fighting to rescue his princess from the evil Jaffar. To achieve this aim the player has to guide him around deadly traps (being impaled on spikes or guillotined is a sure way to die and end the game) and engage in swordfights with enemy guards. Like many real-life simulation games (Microsoft also produced a popular flight simulation game), its fans were presumably largely train enthusiasts or those who still harboured a secret desire to be a train driver, although stereotyping them all as anorak-wearing train spotters is probably unfair!
