Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Are you in the MOOD to play a classic video game?

Answer: Doom

The basic idea of 'Doom' was to fight your way out of a military base, killing various monsters and possessed people along the way, while ensuring that you didn't run out of ammunition or get too badly injured or killed. The game was first released for the PC in 1993 and reached millions of players thanks to a large part of it being released as shareware.

It also turned out to be ground breaking in terms of its graphics (despite being written for MS-DOS) and game play - it paved the way for both numerous other "first person shooter" games and a whole franchise of further 'Doom' releases.

These included sequels, versions ported to various game consoles, books and even a film (2005's 'Doom' starring Karl Urban, Rosamund Pike and The Rock).
2. Perhaps the developers checked out Iranian PINAFORE PRICES before designing the costumes for this game's characters?

Answer: Prince of Persia

'Prince of Persia' is another video game that has spawned plenty of sequels and been turned into a film - 'Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time', starring Jake Gyllenhaal as the titular prince, was released in 2010. The original game dates back to 1989 and features the unnamed prince fighting to rescue his princess from the evil Jaffar. To achieve this aim the player has to guide him around deadly traps (being impaled on spikes or guillotined is a sure way to die and end the game) and engage in swordfights with enemy guards.

The character wears simple white clothing in the original, but soon graduated to a more impressive wardrobe complete with turban in later versions.
3. Anorak-wearing enthusiasts can stay warm and dry by playing this game that OMITS CURT RAIL FORMATIONS.

Answer: Microsoft Train Simulator

The point of 'Microsoft Train Simulator' can be easily gleaned from its title - it simulates the experience of driving a train. Like many real-life simulation games (Microsoft also produced a popular flight simulation game), its fans were presumably largely train enthusiasts or those who still harboured a secret desire to be a train driver, although stereotyping them all as anorak-wearing train spotters is probably unfair! The game was initially released in 2001 for Windows and featured railway lines in the US, UK, Japan and Austria along with recreations of famous trains such as the Flying Scotsman and the Orient Express.
4. You SCAN the PIER and discover you are SAVED. An arcade full of old examples of this classic game is right in front of you!

Answer: Space Invaders

'Space Invaders' was first released in 1978 as a purpose built arcade game, although it was later released on various Atari consoles. Unsurprisingly for such an early game, it had very simple graphics and a very simple concept - the player fired a fixed laser cannon at rows of little aliens advancing down the screen at a gradually increasing speed. Points were awarded for successfully shooting down the aliens and the game ended when the aliens either destroyed the player's cannon or reached the bottom of the screen - a successful space invasion! Updated versions of the game were also released for more modern consoles such as the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo DS.
5. In this cute game you can take a stroll around the neighbourhood, NOTING DENS and meeting friends.

Answer: Nintendogs

'Nintendogs' is a dog-owning simulation game - players get to name, talk to, feed, groom, teach, walk and play with their simulated pet in an essentially endless game. They can also compete in local dog trials and competitions, although not if their poor pet is too dirty, hungry or thirsty! Walking the neighbourhood also gives the opportunity to explore, visit shops and make friends with other local dogs.

As pet owners gain more experience and points the game also opens up additional dog breeds for adoption and items to personalise your home.

The game was released for the Nintendo DS in 2005 in various versions which gave different dog breeds as starting options.
6. You've been telling INVERTED LIES! What is the real name of this series of video games featuring zombies?

Answer: Resident Evil

'Resident Evil' first appeared on the PlayStation in 1996 and was described as a "survival horror" game. The original featured two main characters, Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine, who have to escape from a mansion overrun by monsters (particularly zombies) following the release of mutating virus.

In addition to shooting monsters, players must also explore the mansion, solve a variety of puzzles and unravel the complex storyline. The plots of the later sequels (which continued to be released over 20 years after the debut of the original game) build on the storyline established in the original and a whole series of related films starring Milla Jovovich have also been released.
7. In this game you might spot an OSTRICH BACON AD if you visit the Wumpa Islands.

Answer: Crash Bandicoot

The Wumpa Islands don't exist in the real world, but in the world of video games they can be found south of Australia and are home to a range of mutant creatures and the evil scientist, Dr Neo Cortex, who experimented on them. The main protagonist is a bandicoot (a type of marsupial endemic to Australia and New Guinea) named Crash.

The plot revolves around Crash's mission to rescue his friend Tawna from Dr. Cortex's castle stronghold. The game first appeared for the PlayStation in 1996 and several sequels, including racing games such as 'Nitro Kart', later followed along with versions for other console and systems.
8. Fire up your computer, put your best FLAT CROW FORWARD and head off into online battle.

Answer: World of Warcraft

'World of Warcraft' was first released in 2004 and falls into the MMORPG - Massively Multi-player Online Role-Playing Game - genre. This type of game focuses on the online element of gaming, allowing a player to create their own character and then immerse themselves in an externally-hosted world where they can interact with thousands of other players as well as non-player characters (NPCs). 'World of Warcraft' is based in the same fantasy world as used in the earlier series of 'Warcraft' games (both video and tabletop varieties), where humans mix with elves, dwarves, orcs and a whole range of other creatures.

While "war" features in the title, building a character and collaborating with others to complete challenges is as important a part of the game as going around attacking things.
9. You might want to build a TEST SHELTER before committing to constructing a whole city in this game of strategy.

Answer: The Settlers

'The Settlers' is a long-running series of PC and Mac (later expanded into online and mobile) civilisation-building strategy computer games. The original game was released in 1993 and gave players the task of building a settlement from scratch, running and growing its economy, generating resources and building an army with which to conquer rival races. Sequels added other elements and themes - 'The Settlers II' had a Roman theme, while 'The Settlers III' gave players more control of the military elements of the game.
10. This game's archaeologist often encounters dangerous situations at a MORBID RATE.

Answer: Tomb Raider

'Tomb Raider' is perhaps the most famous video game to inspire a movie, as the 2001 adaptation 'Lara Croft: Tomb Raider' starring Angelina Jolie was itself rebooted in 2018 with Alicia Vikander taking on the role of the feisty archaeologist. The original game was released in 1996 for the PlayStation, Sega Saturn and PC.

It tasked players with controlling Lara's quest to search through various archaeological sites full of tombs (locations include Greece, Egypt and Atlantis) in order to retrieve the missing pieces of an artefact known as the Scion.
