Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The spurwing lapwing is a common shorebird found throughout east Africa. It is a short bird and black and white in color. What is another common name for the spurwing lapwing?

Answer: Spurwing plover

Spurwing plover is indeed the other commonly used name. There are a number of other lapwings/plovers including the yellow wattled lapwing.
2. This brown east African bird builds huge nests. In fact, the nests have chambers inside. Unfortunately though, the bird is considered bad luck and sometimes killed, though truthfully the bird is very generous as it lets Egyptian geese, use its massive nests to lay their eggs. Which bird is this?

Answer: Hammerkop

Hopefully you guessed the right answer-- the hammerkop. The hammerkop is really quite something to see, as its head is in the shape of a hammer, hence the name hammerkop, or in German, hammer head. African jacanas live mostly by the shore and by no means build nests as big, and black kites are birds of prey, though they are actually brown in color.
3. This bird is very majestic standing at average about three feet, and dancing gracefully during courtship. They are the national bird of Uganda, and are on the flag. In addition, this bird eats grass seeds, insects, as well as invertebrates.

Answer: Grey crowned crane

Yup, that's right, the answer is the grey crowned crane, also known as the 'crested crane'. An impala is actually an antelope-like creature which is also on the coat of arms. The shoebill stork, though a very famous bird and also associated largely with Uganda, is not the national bird, and the crested francolin is a small, fat bird, which also feeds on insects and grass seeds. Moving on!
4. This bird makes its 'nest' in large rocks. Really they are not nests though, they are more hollowed out holes in the rock that the birds make and sleep in. Monitor lizards will often try to get into the nests and eat the birds. This bird lives by water because its main diet is small fish. Which bird is this?

Answer: Pied kingfisher

This one shouldn't have been too hard hopefully. Pied kingfishers are by far the most common species of kingfisher. they hover above the water and then dive down to catch their prey. The other three birds also live by the water but do not use the same nesting methods or eating methods.
5. This bird is related to the American bald eagle and the Madagascar fish eagle. It is the national bird of Zimbabwe and Zambia and it appears on the Namibia coat of arms. It lives by the see, perching from a high tree branch until it can swoop down to catch its next meal-- a fish. Its high pitched squeal is easily recognizable, and once you hear it you know you are by water.

Answer: African fish eagle

The African fish eagle is magnificent to see, and are actually quite a common sight. The other options are all also birds of prey but do none of the others are on the Namibia coat of arms, nor are they the national birds of Zimbabwe and Zambia.
6. This bird is one of my personal favorites-- its is black and white with a very long tail but the tail is only for males. So is the color for that matter. Females of this species are simply dull brown. Males have a bright read beak too. These birds are brood parasites (meaning they lay their eggs in other bird's nests and provide no parental care), but they do not kill or evict their host's offspring. What bird is this?

Answer: Pin-tailed whydah

That's right-- it was the whydah. The other options were just various other sorts of east African birds. An interesting fact about the pin-tailed whydah is that the females are easily distinguished because they always hang around the males. The reason? One male can have many, many different mates. The pin-tailed whydah males certainly get around!
7. The weaver birds of east Africa are a beautiful, yet common sight. They live all over and live in very large groups, often mixing species. Which of these is not a species of weaver bird?

Answer: Black-tailed weaver

This one was hard, so if you got it right you're good. Weavers can be very hard to identify as many look almost identical and the females are almost always another dull brown bird, though you can tell they are weavers by the fact that they hang around with other weavers. An interesting fact-- male weavers build nests and present them to their female. If the female dislikes the nest she takes it apart, making the male start all over again.
8. The marabou stork is a very large bird with huge sacks of pink flesh hanging from its throat and neck. Many consider it a very ugly bird, though many tourists think they are amazing, as they are incredibly common. They eat carrion, and trash making city dwellers consider them dirty and pests. In national parks on the other hand they are more than welcome. Why?

Answer: They clean up the parks by eating dead things.

They do indeed clean up the parks. They, as far as I know, are not trainable and there are still many bats, and sometimes mice at the lodges. if you want to get a picture of any bird in Uganda, this one is the easiest, as in the city especially, they really aren't very afraid of people. They even will tip over trashcans and eat what is inside.
9. Which of these is not true of the goliath heron?

Answer: It gets its color from the fish it eats, which are dull colored.

The goliath heron is indeed the largest heron, and is almost always solitary but on a rare occasion can be seen with one other heron. It is almost always silent, even when breeding, except if disturbed, it releases a harsh 'kraak-kraak'. It eats mainly large fish, frogs, lizards, snakes, and crabs, so it does not get its color from the fish it eats, unlike flamingos.
10. In all of Africa there is a wide range and diversity of wildlife and to a foreigner at first names can be misleading. Which of these is the name of one of the east African birds?

Answer: Tchagra

That one was tough I think. A klipspringer is a small deer-like creature with hooves adapted to climbing rocks. A dik-dik is similar but without the whole hoof thing. A galago, also called a bush-baby is a very cute, bug-eyed lemur type creature. A tchagra is a small, fairly common bird found in some woody country sides, feeding mostly on bugs. Hope you enjoyed the quiz!
