Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these foods is potentially harmful to a cat?

Answer: Milk

Although many children's books and old wives' tales would lead one to believe otherwise, cow's milk is not great for a cat's digestive system. A few laps from a bowl may be safe, but any more than that can cause diarrhea. It really depends on the cat, but because milk doesn't provide health benefits, it's not worth the risk.
2. Oh, no! You come home to find Rover has eaten an old M&M you forgot to pick up off the carpet. You remember that chocolate is dangerous for dogs. Rover is a two-year-old Labrador retriever. What should you do?

Answer: Don't panic. One M & M is unlikely to cause a problem

A two-year-old Labrador is unlikely to be harmed by such a small amount of chocolate. He may have a bit of an upset stomach, but according to National Geographic's online Chocolate Toxicity Chart, a seventy-five pound dog would only experience any effects after consuming ten ounces of milk chocolate, and the possibility of death doesn't come into the picture until fifty ounces are consumed. Different types of chocolate have different effects, white chocolate being the most harmless, and cocoa being the most dangerous.
3. Which of these foods would be harmful to a pet rat?

Answer: Green bananas

Rats have versatile stomachs, but don't think they can eat everything. Green bananas prevent starch digestion in your rat, but regular bananas are fine. Other foods that rats cannot eat include apple seeds (which contain small amounts of cyanide) and blue cheese (the mold used to make this cheese is toxic).
4. Which of these food items can you safely feed Polly the parrot?

Answer: Chicken wings

Chicken wings are fine to feed a parrot if properly cooked. Apple seeds, cheetos, and rhubarb are not appropriate foods, and could potentially kill a parrot.
5. You bought your daughter an adorable dwarf hamster named Mr. Fluffle to cheer her up after Polly died. Which of these foods should you tell your daughter not to feed her new hamster?

Answer: Raw kidney beans

Raw kidney beans are poisonous to hamsters due to the presence of phytohaemagglutinin, a protein found in plants which hamsters and many other mammals cannot safely consume. Let's hope Mr. Fluffle lasts a bit longer than Polly.
6. Wow, that was a delicious chicken dinner! But now you have all these small, brittle, leftover bones. Dogs love bones, so why shouldn't you feed these to your dog Rover?

Answer: Rover could choke on the shards of brittle bone

Cooked chicken bones may very easily splinter in Rover's mouth, lodging in his stomach and causing health problems. Keep dogs away from chicken leftovers!
7. Which is the safest food item for a pet bearded dragon (lizard)?

Answer: Crickets purchased from a pet store

Never feed your lizard crickets caught outside, because they can harbor pesticides or diseases. Crickets from a pet store are bred to be healthy for your lizard friends.
8. Which of these foods should you not feed a pet slug?

Answer: Saltine crackers

Slugs can be loyal pets, and you never have to worry about them scurrying away too quickly to catch. Foods with the slightest bit of salt, however, are capable of completely dehydrating and killing a slug.
9. Which of these is the least appropriate choice to feed domestic Madagascar hissing cockroaches?

Answer: Iceberg lettuce

Iceberg lettuce is a waste to feed a cockroach, as it has low nutritional value, consisting mostly of water.
10. Why should you discourage your cat from chasing spiders?

Answer: Spiders may be venomous

It is always better to be on the safer side. Venomous spiders, such as brown recluses and black widows, may bite your cat, so it's best to kill or remove any suspicious-looking spiders hanging around the house.
