Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the scientific name for the sun bear?

Answer: Helarctos malayanus

The sun bear was first recorded and described in 1821 in Sumatra, but was first called 'Ursus malayanus' by British statesman, Stamford Raffles. However, American naturalist Thomas Horsfield later thought the species better suited in a genus of its own, upon studying it in 1825.
2. The sun bear is the smallest of all extant bears.

Answer: True

Sun bears can weigh as little as 55 pounds, around 150 at the maximum, and are around 30 inches tall at the shoulder. For comparison, the North American black bear, the most common bear in North America, can weigh up to 600 pounds and sometimes even a lot more.
3. The sun bear also goes by the name 'beruang madu' which means what in Malay and Indonesian?

Answer: Honey bear

Sun bears are fond of honey, but their diet is extensive. They are also fond of insects, fruit and seeds, while occasionally eating animals such as deer, turtles, earthworms, etc.
4. Compared to other bear species, what body part of the sun bear is longer?

Answer: Tongue

The sun bear has the longest tongue of all the bears, at between 20-25cm or 8-10 inches long.

The sun bear uses its long tongue to extract honey, termites, bees, bee larvae, and other food it is partial to.
5. Which of these is a consequence for flying squirrels and hornbills, once a sun bear has ended its hunt for bee nests and honey in the trees?

Answer: A prospective new home

When sun bears climb trees to hunt for honey, they inadvertently provide flying squirrels, hornbills and other tree dwelling animals a new home. Their razor sharp claws carve cavities, crevices and holes into the trees, which other animals are happy to move into.
6. A threat to the sun bear is the medicinal trade in China. Sun bears are caught and farmed for what?

Answer: Bile

The bile trade, despite the lack of medicinal evidence, is still popular in China, although being illegal in 20 of China's provinces. Sun bears are captured from the wild in Southeast Asia, as opposed to being captively bred, which has a negative effect on their population in the wild. They are listed as vulnerable in the first quarter of the twenty-first century.
7. The sun bear is the most arboreal (tree-dwelling) of all extant bear species.

Answer: True

Sun bears are excellent at climbing. Their paws are large, as well as their claws, with the soles of their paws being hairless, to help with grip.
8. Which of these is a similarity between the sun bear and the honey badger?

Answer: Both have loose skin, meaning they can turn and fight back, whilst in the grip of an attacker

Like the honey badger, the sun bear has loose skin that it can twist and turn in easily, so whilst in the grip of an attacker, it can twist around to fight back whatever is assaulting it. It does not, however, possess the resistance to snake venom that the honey badger's thick skin does.
9. In which of these countries will you NOT find sun bears in the wild?

Answer: Uzbekistan

Sun bears are spread throughout Southeast Asia, including Bangladesh, Brunei, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and southern China.

Uzbekistan is a country in Central Asia.
10. Sun bears hibernate for the longest period of all the bear species.

Answer: False

Sun bears do not hibernate at all. This is believed to be because they have food sources throughout the year, in plentiful supply.
