Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Inside the one they called "The Greatest" lies fifty-five and Michael Jackson's space captain, making anatomical sacs.

Answer: alveoli

Inside ALI lies LV (fifty-five) and EO (anyone remember the 3-D short shot by Francis Ford Coppola for Disney, starring Jacko as a space jockey?) "Alveoli" is based on the Latin for "beehive", and is found in our lungs (it's also the name for tooth sockets!)
2. To get a molecular suspension, a food fish must carry two fifties and a variant of a Yiddish expression.

Answer: colloid

COD carries LL (two fifties) and OI (a variant on the Yiddish OY; see my quiz on Yiddish). "Colloid" comes from the Greek for "glue" as are "protocol" and "collage", and besides glue, colloids include hair gel, Jell-O gelatin, mayonnaise and any gel-like substance that suspends solid particles in a liquid base.
3. Constipated, from the price I have said!

Answer: costive

From the COST I'VE said. "Costive" comes from the root word meaning "tight" and also means "stingy".
4. Rhythmic alteration from record company in Hispanic greeting.

Answer: hemiola

EMI (record company) in HOLA (Hispanic greetng). "Hemiola", from "hemi" for "half", is an alteration of rhythm or tempo within a musical score.
5. To set someone free, put said African animal and 1001 in greeting piece of fabric or plastic.

Answer: manumit

NU (said African animal) and MI (1001) in MAT. "Manumit", meaning to set free, comes from the Latin words for "hand" and "send".
6. Laborous? Enjoin a flower to bloom in Elizabethan idiom!

Answer: operose

"Ope, rose!", as Shakespeare might have said it. "Operose" comes the Latin for work as does "opus", "opera" and "operate".
7. Put a tablet by a charged particle to get a riding cushion.

Answer: pillion

PILL by ION. The root for "pillion" means hide or skin, which it was originally made of. And it can be found on horse saddle or motorcycle!
8. In sodium chloride, that is, the 14th letter makes this answer leap out!

Answer: salient

In SALT, I.E. (Latin for "That is") and N (the 14th letter). "Salient" shares with "somersault", "assault" and "insult" the Latin root for "leap" and means outstanding as if something leaps out at you!
9. An antacid buries director Grosbard; you get quite a mound!

Answer: tumulus

Anyone remember German director ULU Grosbard (STRAIGHT TIME and TRUE CONFESSIONS)? Put him in TUMS and you get "tumulus" from the Latin for mound as are "tumor" and "tumescent".
10. Sixes by half of wheat dish becomes like answer 2.

Answer: viscous

VIs by COUS (half of COUSCOUS, a North African dish of crushedwheat or coarse wheat flour). Viscosity, or gluiness, is common to all colloids. The word comes from the Latin for "bird feces".
