Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Part of a woman has an egg to change.

Answer: ovary

"To change" = "vary." "An egg" = "o." This makes "o vary." "Ovary" is "part of a woman." Cryptics will sometimes use shape clues such as an egg for the letter "o" or a stick for the letter "i". Always keep that in mind if something is particularly troublesome. Maybe there is a shape clue to try.
2. Messing up in two consecutive times wearing a toupee.

Answer: ruining

"In" "two consecutive times" is "inin." "Wearing" means to put "rug" ("a toupee") around it. That makes "RU(inin)G," which defines "messing up."
3. Quit around the 3rd of April, wiped.

Answer: dried

"Quit" = "died." "The 3rd (letter) of April" is "r." Putting "died" "around" "r" gives us the answer to "wiped" - "D(r)IED."
4. The first one opens an alcoholic beverage inside of the mouth.

Answer: original

"One" = "i." (Roman Numeral) "An alcoholic beverage" = "gin." "I" "opens" (is in front of) "gin." All of this is "inside" "oral." ("of the mouth") This all gives us "OR(igin)AL," the definition of "the first."
5. Views the sound of the average grades.

Answer: sees

"The average grades" = "Cs." "The sound of "Cs" is "sees," which is synonymous with "views."
6. Sort and print by machine.

Answer: type

(Double Definition) "Type" is defined by both "sort" and "print by machine."
7. Mary's foot kicked up packing material.

Answer: styrofoam

"Kicked up" tells us to scramble "Mary's foot" (ignore the apostrophe) to get "styrofoam," "packing material."
8. An eel disfigured a city leader.

Answer: moray

"Disfigured" tells us to scramble "Mayor" ("A city leader") to get "moray," "an eel."
9. Bandy and Howard are a little mixed up.

Answer: moes

"Mixed up" means to scramble "some" ("a little") to get "Moes." "Bandy and Howard" are both famous Moes. (Moe Bandy was a country singer and Moe Howard was a Stooge.)
10. Salutations belonging to him.

Answer: his

(Heteronym) "His" can be defined as "salutations" and "belonging to him." They are spelled the same, but they are pronounced differently.
11. (For Harry Potter fans) - The wand tip touches Weasley and a bit of Gringott's just isn't right.

Answer: wrong

"The wand tip" = "w." (The front letter) "Weasley" = "Ron." "And" is a linking word. "A bit of Gringott's" = "g." "w" "touches" "ron g" to form "wrong," which can be defined as "just isn't right."
12. Five to one automobile.

Answer: van

"Five" = "v." (Roman Numeral) "One" = "an." "To" is a linking word, which gives us "van," an "automobile."
13. Liftin' a dried grape?

Answer: raisin

(Double Definition) "Raisin" is "a dried grape" and "Liftin'," with the apostrophe.
14. A Native American began in the Hoosier state.

Answer: indian

"The Hoosier state" = "Indiana." "Began in" means to only use the leading letters of the word, so we get "Indian," "A Native American."
15. Motorists like a medic fronting four immediate care areas in the hospital.

Answer: drivers

"A medic" = "Dr." "Fronting" is a linker. "Four immediate care areas in the hospital" = "iv ERs." (Roman Numeral) This makes "drivers," which are "motorists."
16. End up holding plants.

Answer: pots

"End" = "stop." "Up" is a signal to read "stop" backwards. "Pots" are used for "holding plants."
17. They are alike, without New York Mets starters entering into the first half of a plan.

Answer: synonyms

"Without" = "no." "New York Mets starters" means to use the starting letters "NYM." "Plan" = "system." "The first half of" "system" is "sys." "Entering into" means that "nonym" goes into "sys." We get "SY(nonym)S," which is defined as "they are alike."
18. There's something in better miters. Wood doesn't stand a chance against one.

Answer: termite

"There's something in" tells us to look inside of "better miters." We can see "termite," which "wood doesn't stand a chance against."
19. Initially, you ate my sweet potato.

Answer: yam

"Initially" tells us to use the first letters of "you ate my." This gives us "yam," a "sweet potato."
20. Mr. Marx backed up the queen of talk.

Answer: oprah

"Mr. Marx" is "Harpo." "Backed up" reverses the letters. "Oprah" is considered to be "the queen of talk."
