Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Remove one letter from the word PRAYER to form a word that means someone who hands over money.

Answer: Payer

You don't often hear someone called a "payer" in everyday conversation. The term is primarily used in banking and finance as a term with legal meaning. A "payer" is one who is legally responsible for payment under the conditions of various commercial instruments.
2. Remove a letter and rearrange to get a word meaning to harvest a crop.

Answer: reap

Generally the word "reap" is used in an agricultural sense of harvesting, but it does have other, related meanings too. One is said to "reap a reward" as a result of some action one takes to earn it. The frequently used expression involving "reap" is actually a Bible verse: "for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap."
3. To hit quickly and sharply. Also a form of music.

Answer: rap

The word "rap" has a great many alternate definitions, far more than I realized when starting this quiz. "Striking a quick sharp blow" is of course the one chosen here, but it also means the sound from tapping, is slang for a prison term (and thus the phrase "rap sheet"), can mean a small bit or the least little bit, was popular in the 1960s and 1970s in at least the United States as a term for conversation or discussion, and of course refers to a form of urban music distinguished by spoken rhyming.
4. Symbol for the element protactinium.

Answer: Pa

The year 2013 marked the 100th anniversary of the discovery of Protactinium. It was first identified in 1913, although it was originally called "brevium," because of its short half-life.

"PA" as an abbreviation has numerous meanings, from the postal abbreviation for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, to physician's assistant and power of attorney.
5. Abbreviation for ampere.

Answer: A

The ampere is the basic SI unit of electric current, which is the amount of electric charge flowing past a certain point per time period.
6. Now let's start with PRAYER again. Drop one letter from PRAYER, rearrange, and come up with a word meaning to return monies loaned.

Answer: Repay

"Repay" is often used with the meaning of repaying money to someone, but it does not have to refer only to money. You can repay some kind words with a smile or an expression of thanks. You can "repay" a visit by visiting the person who visited you. In general the key is that it involves a giving back.
7. A twelve month period.

Answer: Year

As a general meaning, a "year" is the time it takes the earth to do one complete revolution around the sun. One can get technical and distinguish between a whole series of different "years": sidereal year, solar year, lunar year, and so forth. Each varies in how it is measured and in the exact length of time it describes. But commonly speaking in the U.S. and many other countries we are talking about a Gregorian calendar year made up of 365 or 366 days divided into twelve months.
8. A seed-bearing spike of a cereal plant.

Answer: Ear

Yes, an "ear" is the organ of hearing, but for this question I chose its botanical meaning. There, an ear is the grain-bearing tip of the stem of a cereal plant. People often think of an ear of corn when they hear the word "ear," but wheat, maize, and other cereals have ears too. Ears frequently resemble spikes.
9. The symbol for the element radium.

Answer: Ra

Radium is a highly radioactive element. Its symbol is of course Ra, and its atomic number is 88. It was discovered by Marie and Pierre Curie in 1898. Radium is a dangerous substance, despite once being used in toothpaste and on watch dials, and has been blamed for Marie Curie's death at a relatively young age.
10. Letter used for the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient.

Answer: R

The (usually lowercase) "r" is a symbol for the Pearson correlation coefficient, which is a measure of the linear correlation between two variables. Strong positive correlations approach the value 1, while strong negative correlations approach -1. The Pearson r is commonly used in statistics as a measure of linear dependence between two variables. The "Pearson" in the term is for Karl Pearson, an English mathematician credited with developing the concept.
