He went to the University of Edinburgh, intending to join the clergy. He was a "self-taught philosopher, astronomer and mathematician," as Sir Walter Scott called him. Brewster was very skillful at making telescopes.

The kaleidoscope was known to the ancient Greeks, but lost popularity and faded from memory. It was reinvented by Brewster in 1816 while doing experiments with light polarization. Brewster patented it in 1817. His design was a tube with pairs of mirrors at one end, and pairs of translucent disks at the other, and beads between the two. Intended as a science tool, the kaleidoscope was quickly copied as a toy.
