Grace's father, Jack Kelly, was of Irish heritage. He was an Olympic swimming champion and a successful businessman with a large construction company in Philadelphia. In her years up to high school, Grace enjoyed playing with dolls, and school theatrics. She studied ballet for one year as a teenager. Henry Hathaway was a film director and producer. He was impressed by what he had seen of Grace Kelly's acting on the stage. He offered her a small role as an innocent bystander in the film "Fourteen Hours". This was a 1951 drama about a police officer trying to prevent a man with mental health issues from jumping off the 15th floor of a hotel. This was when Grace was 22 years old.

Grace was 26 years old when she made her last film in 1956. She gave up Hollywood after getting married, but she was still very much in the public eye. Grace only made eleven movies in total.

In 1962, Grace was thrilled after being given the opportunity to play the part of Marnie in the film of the same name. Unfortunately, due to royal duties and social pressures, she was forced to abstain.

In 1977, she narrated "The Children of Theatre Street", a documentary about a world-renowned ballet school.

"To Catch a Thief" has romance, crime, comedy and light suspense. John Robie (Cary Grant) is an American, former high-class thief who has retired to the French Riviera. There is a series of jewel robberies in the area. John "The Cat" becomes the chief suspect.

John wants to prove his innocence by catching the new Cat in the act. There is a family of rich American tourists, called Stevens, who own jewellery on the Riviera. John makes friends with Jessie (Jessie Royce Landis) and her seductive daughter Frances (Grace Kelly).

Frances (Grace) appears cold at first, but when John (Cary) walks her back to her hotel room, she takes the initiative and kisses him on the mouth. Grace played the part of a seductress to perfection. Alfred Hitchcock brought lots of sexual innuendo into the film, such as a kissing scene with fireworks exploding outside.

"High Society" is a musical romantic adaptation of the successful 1940 comedy "The Philadelphia Story". The aptly named "High Society" is a love story set in the context of an upper-middle-class environment.

Wealthy socialite Tracy Lord (Grace Kelly) is divorced from wealthy singer-songwriter Dexter-Haven (Bing Crosby). Dexter still loves Tracy, but she is engaged to marry professional prig George (John Lund). Breezy reporter Mike (Frank Sinatra) and photographer Liz (Celeste Holm) are both working for a tabloid newspaper called "Spy". Resenting their intrusion, Tracy gives them a fake story about her family.

Grace Kelly had played the role of privileged heiress Tracy Lord before. This was her graduation performance at the Academy in Philip Barry's comic play "The Philadelphia Story".

The songs in "High Society" were written by Cole Porter. Grace only sang one song, "True Love". She sang it with Bing Crosby. This was Grace's last film.

According to various sources, Grace Kelly's image as a Hollywood ice queen, and the "good girl" image, covered up her love life of illicit affairs with married men.

The first of these was Gary Cooper when they were filming 1952's "High Noon". He was married at the time and 28 years her senior. Later, there was Clark Gable when they were in Africa filming 1953's "Mogambo". There were rumours that Grace hooked up briefly with Marlon Brando, David Niven, Frank Sinatra, and Bing Crosby.

Grace became involved with married actor Ray Milland. They were both filming 1954's "Dial M for Murder" at the time. According to the tabloids, Ray had to abstain from his divorce plans and end the affair because he realised how costly this could be. Gossip columnist Hedda Hopper accused her of being a nymphomaniac and a homewrecker.

When Grace was filming 1954's "The Bridges at Toko-Ri", with actor William Holden, there were rumours that he was prepared to leave his wife to be with Grace.

Grace briefly dated millionaire playboy Prince Aly Khan and French actor Jean-Paul Aumont. She got engaged to fashion designer Oleg Cassini in 1954. Grace's family strongly disapproved of this engagement. Cassini said, "Her family regarded her as a prize possession". Various social pressures drove Grace and Oleg apart.

The French government requested that Grace Kelly be persuaded to attend the International Film Festival at Cannes in May 1955. She was reluctant at first. Eventually, she was won over and agreed to go.

The editor of "Paris Match" magazine put forward a suggestion for a promotional photo feature: Grace (who had just won an Oscar) with eligible bachelor Prince Rainier of Monaco. This was marketed as "Prince Charming Meets Movie Queen". They met in Monaco, also on the French Riviera, not far from Cannes.

She returned home to the States from Cannes to film "The Swan". Prince Rainier courted Grace by post, telephone, and through his advisor Father Tucker who even wrote to Grace's father, Jack, to gain approval. Grace and the Prince met again in Philadelphia where they took every opportunity to be together.

The survival of the Grimaldi line of succession was of high importance to Prince Rainier. For this, he needed to have children. Grace passed the required fertility test. Back in Monaco, the lead-up to the wedding turned into a media circus with over 1,500 journalists in attendance along with hundreds of guests and tourists.

The marriage required two ceremonies, one religious, the other civil. The religious wedding of Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier took place on 19th April 1956 in the Cathedral of St Nicholas in Monaco.

On January 20th, 1957, Princess Grace gave birth to her first baby girl. When she saw her, Grace wept, held her in her arms, and sipped champagne. Rainier announced to his subjects, "My beloved wife, the Princess, has given birth to a baby princess who has been given the name of Caroline Louise Marguerite. Thank God and rejoice".

Grace felt motivated by motherhood: "I'm not going to let public life or anything else push me out of my job as a mother". About a year later, in March 1958, their son, Albert, was born. As the male heir, he was next in line to become the sovereign prince. He would eventually become Albert II, Prince of Monaco.

Grace wanted more children, but, sadly, there were two miscarriages. It wasn't until seven years later, in February 1965, that Grace would give birth to another baby, a girl called Stephanie.

Princess Grace chose to increase her workload rather than being frustrated with too much free time, even if it exhausted her. Add to this her philanthropic spirit, and she progressed into devoting herself to charity work, including working for the Red Cross.

The first charity that Princess Grace founded was the World Association of Children's Friends (AMADE) in 1963. Its purpose was, and is, to support the rights of children to development, health, and education all over the world. In 1964, she founded the Princess Grace Foundation. This charity's purpose was to assist artists all over the world, including Monaco's local artisans, and a ballet school.

Princess Grace had a love of flowers, so in 1968 she founded the Garden Club. From Garden Club came flower-arranging competitions, and charity fund-raising. She strongly believed in the benefits to children of breastfeeding and was appointed as an honorary president of La Leche League International (LLLI).

It was September 1982. Grace had an appointment with her Monaco couturier to have some dresses altered before their trip to Paris. There wasn't room in the car for Grace, Stephanie, Christian (the chauffeur), and all the luggage, so Christian stayed behind whilst Grace drove, even though the road between Roc Agel and Monaco was twisting and dangerous.

On their journey, a witness saw the car zigzagging and then going faster before hurtling down the hillside and crashing. Stephanie was injured but still able to move, freeing herself from the car. Grace was half-conscious and unresponsive.

Grace was placed on a life-support system in the hospital to treat her many external wounds. A CAT scan revealed that Grace must have suffered a stroke before the accident. Her family kept a vigil at her bedside.

Her death caused a worldwide tide of grief and affection.
