Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dolores del Rio was born on August 3, 1905 in which country?

Answer: Mexico

Born in Durango, Mexico, she made her first appearance in films when she was 20 years old. She appeared in over 50 films beginning in 1925 thru 1978 as well as many short films. She appeared in television episodes and specials from 1957 to 1970.
2. Due to the Mexican Revolution, that began in 1910, Dolores del Rio's family lost all of its wealth in 1916. The family then moved from her birthplace to where?

Answer: Mexico City

They were forced to move to the capital of Mexico, Mexico City, to avoid the wrath of Pancho Villa, leader of the revolution. There may be some dispute as to when they actually moved; some sources state 1910, some 1916.
3. After moving, Dolores del Rio began her career as an actress and dancer. While performing as the latter, she met famed director Edwin Carewe who gave her a small part in her first film. What was it called?

Answer: Joanna

As Carlotta de Silva in this 1925 movie "Joanna", she played a very tantalizing vamp (Theda Bara and Pola Negri were also dark-haired vamps). As Joanna, she is a wealthy socialite who falls for a guy, you probably guessed it already, who doesn't have a dime. Needless to say the other hangers on do not like their gold mine, Joanna, to be taken out of circulation. Carewe suggested that she and her husband move permanently to Hollywood where he directed Dolores in many other silent films.
4. During the silent era, Dolores del Rio gained audience popularity from 1925 to 1928, with "What Price Glory" being her most noteworthy achievement. In 1929 she starred in a mostly silent films but parts had sound. What was the name of the film where her voice was first heard and her character's name was in the title?

Answer: Evangeline

"Evangeline", directed by Edwin Carewe, found her playing a woman searching for her betrothed who, right before their wedding, was imprisoned and exiled. The rest of the film finds her searching for her beloved. She did play Carmen in the 1927 "The Loves of Carmen" and "Ramona" in 1928 but both were all silent films.

She was also the star of "Madame du Barry" but it was much later in 1934.
5. A 1932 film called "Girl of the Rio" found Dolores del Rio playing dancer Dolores opposite Don Jose, played by Leo Carillo (later Pancho in the "Cisco Kid" series). The film was controversial and elicited protests from which country?

Answer: Mexico

The film, which was a 1932 RKO musical, showed Don Jose (bad guy) pulling strings with a Mexican court to have Dolores' boy friend (good guy) sent to prison. But Dolores pulled some strings of her own and got him released. This just didn't sit well with the Mexican government, ie. who could pay or give the most for justice in their country won. For this reason the film was relocated to the Mediterranean area.
6. Dolores del Rio's last feature film was in 1978, and she was billed as the lead along with Anthony Quinn and Katy Jurado. What was the name of the film that featured her as Grandma Paquita?

Answer: The Children of Sanchez

Although Dolores was featured in posters and previews in "The Children of Sanchez", the reality was far different. Both Dolores and Katy Jurado were not on screen for any appreciable amount of time; it was the last feature for both. Grandma played a woman who advised her granddaughter on how to avoid the abuses of her father by getting married.

This film was banned in Mexico for a few years because it showed the Mexican PRI government in a bad light. Dolores' previous feature was in a 1967 Italian movie, "More Than a Miracle" starring Sophia Loren.
7. A 1932 film saw Dolores del Rio in an underwater scene, in which she appeared to be completely nude. However, when one looks at this clip, it's really hard to tell. Can you name this provocative film directed by King Vidor?

Answer: Bird of Paradise

In "Bird of Paradise" not only did Dolores appear to be nude but her costar, Joel McCrea, appeared in briefs that might be 'banned in Boston'. She (native girl) saves Joel (white fisherman) from a shark and they fall in love but, she is destined to be sacrificed to the gods according to the laws of her tribe.

They try to escape her fate but, do they? The choreography was accomplished by Busby Berkeley one year before he came into his own. Other films mentioned were made in the late 40s with Dolores as the star.
8. According to the Internet Movie Data Base (IMDb) and other sources, Edwin Carewe, who directed Dolores del Rio in many films, had succeeded in having the public perceive her as the female version of what male movie star from the 1920s?

Answer: Rudolph Valentino

Her first film "Joanna" in 1925 caused many people to compare her to a female Rudolph Valentino, the Latin Lover. Although she had minor success in the silent era, Dolores did make the transition to talkies in "Evangeline" while Valentino did not. It seems that his voice just did not lend itself to the masculine lover he portrayed in films.
9. Dolores del Rio did appear in a few episodes on TV. Which of the following series did NOT have her as a guest?

Answer: Father Knows Best

Although the Andersons would have liked her to appear, she never did make it onto "Father Knows Best". She did appear in one episode each of "Marcus Welby M.D.", "Branded" and, "I Spy". She also was as a guest star on "The Chevy Show", "The United States Steel Hour" and, "The Schlitz Playhouse" (her first TV appearance in 1957).

In 1965 she appeared in her only TV movie with costar Hoagy Carmichael, "The Man Who Bought Paradise".
10. In her career, for what motion picture did Dolores del Rio win a Best Supporting Actress Oscar?

Answer: Never won an Oscar

Although she hoped to win one, she never did. In the three other pictures mentioned she won Silver Ariel Mexican awards for Best Actress. She never won an American award but she does have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
