Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What two actresses played the role of Ms Anne Elliot in the 1995 made-for-tv movie and the 2007 ITV versions of Jane Austen's novel, "Persuasion", respectively?

Answer: Amanda Root and Sally Hawkins

Ms Anne Elliot was the second daughter of Sir Walter Elliot who gave up her first and only love on grounds of his lower status in society to please her family and her friend Lady Russell.

The BBC version of "Persuasion" uses music composed by JS Bach and Chopin. (Source. www.imdb.com)

While at least one Chopin piece, "Prelude No.3 in G major" is heard as background music during a scene set in Lyme, it would have been highly improbable the characters of "Persuasion" would have been familiar with his music. The events of "Persuasion" occur in 1814 and Chopin was born in 1810.
2. Jonny Lee Miller can be seen as two different Austen heroes from two of her novels. The characters he plays are both the heroes to Austen's main heroines. Mr Knightley, from the BBC's 2009 version of "Emma" is Miller's most recent Austen role but which character is he more well-known as?

Edmund Bertram is from "Mansfield Park" and Miller played this character in the 1999 Miramax movie version of this novel.

The character Edmund is the second son of the Sir Bertram, Fanny Price's uncle. He chooses the church as his profession much to Mary Crawford's chagrin. But that doesn't stop her from pursuing him as his older brother Tom is a drunkard who gets into precarious and near fatal situations during the course of the story.

Greg Wise starred in Ang Lee's 1995 version while Dominic Cooper starred in the 2008 BBC version of this novel.
4. Jennifer Ehle starred as Elizabeth Bennet in the 2005 film version of "Pride and Prejudice".

Answer: False

Jennifer Ehle did play Elizabeth Bennet, but in the 1995 BBC adaptation. Keira Knightley was Elizabeth Bennett in the 2005 version of this popular Jane Austen novel.

Elizabeth Bennet is the most headstrong and opinionated of the Bennet girls. She refuses Mr Darcy's proposal in Kent as she does not love him or think kindly towards him even though it is possibly the best offer of marriage she will receive.
5. Captain Wentworth from "Persuasion" has been portrayed four times on screen, to date. In 1960 it was Paul Daneman and Bryan Marshall in 1971, both of which were BBC mini-series. What two actors were Capt. Wentworth in 1995 and 2007?

Answer: Ciaran Hinds and Rupert Penry Jones

All actors bar one, have played a male role in a Jane Austen adaptation. Donald Sutherland and Hugh Bonneville were Mr Bennett in the 2005 movie version and ITV's "Lost in Austen" (2008), respectively. Colin Firth and Hugh Grant are the more recognisable male leads of "Pride and Prejudice" and "Sense and Sensibility".

Capt. Wentworth is the spurned suitor of Ms Anne Eliot. She had accepted his proposal only to retract it after she was persuaded to see that it was not a viable match for a daughter of a baronet, as he was merely a naval officer with no fortune. Years later, through circumstances, they are reunited but have to maintain a distance despite their feelings being the same as they were when they were younger.
6. Did these Bond girls, Rosamund Pike and Gemma Arterton, portray respectively, the sisters Jane and Elizabeth Bennet?

Answer: Yes

Rosamund Pike was Jane Bennet opposite Keira Knightley's Elizabeth. Gemma Arterton played Elizabeth in the ITV drama, "Lost in Austen". In this version, Elizabeth was a minor role.

Jane and Elizabeth Bennet are the two elder and more sensible of the five Bennet girls. They are each other's best friends with each confiding in the other in times of need. They are also thought most highly by their father.

In "Lost in Austen", Elizabeth switches her life with Amanda Price, a modern day Jane Austen fan who tries to keep the events from the book running correctly but by doing so assumes Elizabeth's life.

Billie Piper and Blake Ritson were Fanny Price and Edmund Bertram in "Mansfield Park". Rupert Penry Jones and Sally Hawkins were Capt. Wentworth and Anne Elliot of "Persuasion". Romola Garai and Rupert Evans were Emma Woodhouse and Frank Churchill in BBC's 2009 version of "Emma".
8. Which famous Scottish actor played the dashing and loveable Frank Churchill in the 1996 movie adaptation of "Emma"?

Answer: Laurence Olivier

Other Mr Darcys are Matthew MacFadyen in the 2005 movie version and Elliot Cowan in 2008's "Lost in Austen".

Mr Darcy is probably the most well known of Austen's male characters. On his first appearance in Meryton, he quickly attracts the women's attention due to his large fortune but within that same evening, opinion is changed to consider him a snob, full of his own pride in his superior situation.
10. "An Education" star, Carey Mulligan was in two different Jane Austen productions playing two different characters from two of Austen's novels?

Answer: Yes

Carey Mulligan was Kitty Bennet in 2005's "Pride and Prejudice". This was her first major role. She went on in 2007 to portray Isabella Thorpe from "Northanger Abbey" in the ITV adaptation.

Kitty Bennet is the fourth daughter of Mr and Mrs Bennet. While older than Lydia, she is greatly influenced by her younger sister. Isabella Thorpe is a confident yet naive girl who befriends Catherine Morland while in Bath. She views life as being like novels and because of this makes some awful decisions.
