Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the most familiar, and quite appropriate, instances of a penguin popping up in the sports world is in the sport of hockey. What is the name of the penguin mascot of the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins?

Answer: Iceburgh

He made his debut in 1992 alongside a number of other NHL mascots. He has also appeared in the 1995 Jean Claude Van Damme film "Sudden Death".
2. What beverage has a famous series of commercials, featuring penguins and polar bears frolicking together and sharing the named beverage?

Answer: Coca-Cola

Although both animals evoke the cool and fresh nature that Coca-Cola wants to project, their meeting is a complete impossibility. Outside of zoos and Sea World these two species will never be even remotely close to each other. All penguins are native to the southern hemisphere, while polar bears inhabit the northern climes.
3. Which "Looney Tunes" star appeared in a short with a little penguin nicknamed Playboy Penguin?

Answer: Bugs Bunny

Bugs finds the little fella all alone and tries to get him back home to Antarctica. Unfortunately at the end, and much to Bugs chagrin, he learns that Playboy is actually from Hoboken, New Jersey. Playboy has had very few appearances in the shorts but has popped up a number of times in cameos in the various "Looney Tunes" movies.
4. In an attempt to mock censors and conservatives who complained about the ultra violent nature of the "Mortal Kombat" video game series, the creators introduced a new finishing maneuver known as animalites. Which character received the animalitiy of an exploding egg-laying penguin?

Answer: Scorpion

Sadly the scorpion was given to another character and thus Scorpion ended up with the very strange choice of this black and white birdie. Perhaps it would have been more appropriate for the cold themed character in the game but regardless it sits as one of the most bizarre killer animals in the game. I admit my favorite was Sonya's who took on the form of a Killer Rabbit in an homage to "Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail".
5. Even into the realms of presidents and politics does the influence of the penguin spread. The president of what country is informally known as The Penguin, a name also shared by his supporters and allies?

Answer: Argentina

Néstor Carlos Kirchner of Argentina served as the countries president from 2003-2007. His nickname derives from his birthplace in the cold southernly climes of Patagonia. He was s uprising candidate and victor, winning by default when his opponent former President Carlos Menem withdrew form the race.

He famously vowed to "a cold wind of change" despite many critic's belief that he would be an impotent leader. His actions in office were so well received that his wife was elected to replace him when he left office in 2007.
6. Cody Maverick is a penguin with a very unusual talent. What talent does he posses that was interesting enough that a whole movie was made about it?

Answer: Surfing

Cody (voiced by Shia LaBeouf) is the star of the 2007 film "Surf's Up". He has dreams of being a surfer after meeting one during a tour of Antarctica. He is able to convince a talent scout to take him along to a major surfing tournament where he will face beach bully Tank. Ultimately Cody and Tank clash but in a twist ending, neither wins and the championship goes to the most unlikely candidate.
7. What video game series featured a series of penguin creatures with names like Delibird, Piplup, Prinplup, and Empoleon?

Answer: Pokemon

Although numerous penguins have appeared in the other game series, they have almost universally been unnamed. Piplup, Prinplup, and Empoleon were part of a evolutionary line from the Diamond and Pearl set of games. Piplup is one of the starter Pokemon and is the choice of the character Dawn, a regular in later series of the "Pokemon" cartoon.
8. What deep voiced academy award winning actor provided the narration for the beautifully done 2005 documentary about a year in the life of Antarctic penguins, "March of the Penguins"?

Answer: Morgan Freeman

The film detailed one year of an Emperor Penguin colony including eating, mating and hunting habits. It won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Film among many awards. Morgan Freeman is a celebrated actor with numerous film credits to his name including "Driving Miss Daisy", "Amistad" and "Million Dollar Baby".
9. The Cartoon Network movie "Re-Animated" and the sub sequent series "Out of _____'s Head" focus around a boy who has received the brain of a famous cartoonist. As a result he can now see and interact with these cartoons including one named Tux, the penguin. What is the name of the boy star of the show?

Answer: Jimmy

The movie was made as a riff on the urban legend that Walt Disney had his body cryogenically frozen and hidden somewhere beneath the park of Disneyland. Tux the penguin is a completely talentless stand up comedian and singer.
10. What American political party has adopted a penguin as its party mascot?

Answer: Libertarian

The Penguin is known as L.P. the Liberty Penguin. The Democrat's symbol is the donkey and the Republican's have the elephant.
11. Which author famous for a number of off kilter stories, featured giant blind albino penguins in book detailing an expedition to the Antarctic?

Answer: H.P. Lovecraft

The book was entitled "At the Mountains of Madness". The main character is a geologist who recounts the story as a warning against further explorations of his finding and to prevent man from learning what it should not.
12. Not just is image but also the mannerisms of the penguin are becoming so recognizable they are entering the sphere of popular culture. What ESPN personality does a dance that he claims is sweeping the nation called "The Penguin Dance"?

Answer: Tony Kornheiser

His co-host Mike Wilbon can not keep a straight face when Tony does this. The dance involves shuffling his shoulders and not much else, with an occasional so-called penguin call thrown in.
13. Canadian singer and song writer James Gordon once recorded a song called "___ for Penguins". The blank was an item of clothing that is used to help penguins after oil spills. What is that clothing item?

Answer: Sweaters

The sweater serves two purposes. First it helps keep the birds warm, as their natural oils that would normally do the job are destroyed by the slick. Second, it prevents the penguins from preening and cleaning themselves which could allow them to ingest the oil.
14. From what country does a wine, featuring an adorable penguin trekking across the label, known as The Little Penguin come from?

Answer: Australia

The wine is a tribute to a number of species of warm weather penguins who inhabit the islands of Australia and New Zealand. They claim their wine is like a penguin as it is sociable and really breaks the ice.
15. In my last quiz I said no penguin quiz would be complete without a question on my favorite Penguin, Oswald Cobblepot. Which actor played him in the campy, but much loved 1966 "Batman" TV show?

Answer: Burgess Meredith

Outside of his role as Penguin, Meredith is perhaps best known for playing Mickey the trainer or Rocky in that series of movies. Gorshin, Romero and Price played the Joker, Riddler and Egghead respectively on the same show. Remarkably the Penguin appeared in the most episodes of any reoccurring villains.
This quiz was inspired by all the support, ideas and popular demand of my first penguin quiz. If this one does as well expect a third part to the trilogy.
