Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these was the title of the first comic created by Jhonen Vasquez?

Answer: Johnny the Homicidal Maniac

Johnny C. (also known as Nny, which sounds like knee) is a deranged serial killer, who elaborately tortures and kills anyone who irritates him, even just a bit. He may have supernatural powers that keep him from being caught; certainly he gets away with it every time.

He acknowledges his insanity, and sometimes exhibits self-hatred because of it, but his self-analysis does not lead to a change of behavior. There were seven issues in the original series of 'JtHM', which were collected into a single book called 'Johnny the Homicidal Maniac: Director's Cut' in 1997.
2. Which of these singers had a hit in 1961 with a song titled 'Big Bad John'?

Answer: Jimmy Dean

Jimmy Dean wrote the words and music for the song, which was to prove one of his biggest hits, reaching Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and earning a Grammy for Best Country & Western Recording. It tells the story of an American archetype, a strong silent man who seemed to be escaping from his past, and whose heroism saved the lives of many when the mine in which they were working collapsed. Jimmy Dean's recording career continued successfully through the '60s, along with a number of television appearances.

In 1963, 'The Jimmy Dean Show' gave Jim Henson his first opportunity to display his Muppets on television.
3. In what 1984 movie did William Zabka portray Johnny Lawrence, the principal antagonist?

Answer: The Karate Kid

Johnny is a rival of our hero, Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), who resents the fact that his ex-girlfriend has become friends with Daniel. Much bullying ensues, but when Johnny and his gang of hot shot karate pals are totally wiped out by Mr Miyagi (Pat Morita), Daniel and Mr Miyagi organise for Daniel to train in karate and participate in an upcoming tournament. Need I say that Daniel defeats Johnny in the climactic scene?
4. In Leslie Gore's 1963 hit song 'It's My Party', with whom did Johnny leave her party, causing her to cry?

Answer: Judy

The cad - he arrived at her birthday party as her boyfriend, then left with Judy, who "came back wearing his ring." Apparently the events were based on the Sweet 16 party of the daughter of one of the song's writers, and the lyrics certainly resonate with that age group.

The chorus ("It's my party and I'll cry if I want to, / Cry if I want to, cry if I want to. / You would cry too / If it happened to you") became a standard referent for feeling humiliated. The song was such a big hit that it led to a sequel a few months later, 'Judy's Turn to Cry', which illustrated the transitory nature of the heartbreak she had experienced.

When the singer kissed another boy, Johnny punched him, showing that he was still in love with her. Not an approved way to demonstrate affection in my books.
5. In what Stephen King book does Jack Torrance roam an empty hotel wielding an axe, announcing "Heeeeeeeere's Johnny"?

Answer: The Shining

Published in 1977, 'The Shining' was King's third novel, and his first best seller. It focuses on Jack Torrance, a writer struggling with writer's block and alcoholism, who takes on the role of winter caretaker for a mountain hotel, along with his family.

His son Danny has psychic powers (the 'shining' to which the title refers), and is aware of the supernatural forces which abound in the hotel. Jack's sanity crumbles. The book was adapted to a 1980 film directed by Stanley Kubrick, in which Jack Nicholson gave a memorable performance as Jack Torrance. Apparently, King hated the film, feeling it missed out on his vision in the book, particularly in the portrayal of Wendy Torrance and the removal of multiple supernatural elements.
6. In the first single released by Don Henley in 1982, what is it that Johnny can't do?

Answer: Read

'Johnny Can't Read' was on the album 'I Can't Stand Still', Henley's first solo album. The song describes a young man whose struggle with illiteracy leads him to antisocial actions and eventually being on the run after a crime involving a gun. Details are short, but Henley's anger at the failure of the education system to provide Johnny with the essentials for success in contemporary society is obvious.

The song title is a clear reference to a 1955 book about the failings of the American education system by Rudolph Flesch, 'Why Johnny Can't Read - And What You Can Do About It'.
7. What is the title of S E Hinton's coming-of-age novel in which Johnny Cade kills a Soc named Bob?

Answer: The Outsiders

These four titles, along with 'Taming the Star Runner', are the reason why S E Hinton is often credited with creating the genre of Young Adult fiction. 'The Outsiders' was her first novel, published in 1967 while she was still in school. It is narrated by Ponyboy Curtis, who is a member of a working-class group of friends who identify themselves as Greasers.

The Socs (short for Socials) are from the right side of the tracks, and prone to bully the Greasers. In a confrontation between the two groups, Johnny stabs Bob, and things go from bad to worse.

The portrayal of gang violence, along with the dysfunctional families and 'bad language' in the book has led to it being kept off the library shelves in a number of regions; they have also led to it being included in the curriculum in others.
8. In the 1962 song 'Johnny Get Angry' by Joanie Sommers, how does the singer want Johnny to behave to show how much he loves her?

Answer: Like a cave man

Let's start with the disclaimer - this is NOT an attitude to romantic relationships that I would endorse at any time (although when I was ten I didn't really appreciate the reasons why the song made me uncomfortable). The singer feels her boyfriend is a bit of a wimp,, and wants him to stand up to and for her; she dumps him to get a reaction, and states, "I want a brave man / I want a cave man / Johnny show me that you care / Really care for me" by getting aggressive when someone cut in on the couple while they were dancing. The song had a catchy tune, and made Joanie Sommers a one-hit wonder, reaching #7 on the U.S. Pop Chart.

A New Zealand-bred racehorse named Johnny Get Angry won the 2020 Victoria Derby. Unfortunately, he did not fare as well in the 2021 Melbourne Cup, finishing second last.
9. Who directed Johnny Depp in the 2007 movie 'Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street'?

Answer: Tim Burton

This was one of many collaborations between Johnny Depp and Tim Burton. Based on Stephen Sondheim's Broadway musical, it tells of a (probably) mythical Victorian figure, a serial killer named Sweeney Todd. Benjamin Barker is a barber who adopts this alias as he seeks revenge on those who had done him wrong. With his accomplice, Mrs Lovett (Helena Bonham carter), he murders his customers and produces meat pies from their bodies.

There is a lot of slashing of throats all around, and it doesn't end well for anyone.

Not surprising for a Tim Burton film. Johnny Depp won a Golden Globe award for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical, and the film was awarded Best Picture, Comedy or Musical in the same awards ceremony.
10. While lead singer for what band did John Lydon use the stage name Johnny Rotten?

Answer: Sex Pistols

The Sex Pistols were together from 1975 until 1978 (and again for some later revivals that didn't last long), and are considered pioneers of the punk movement in the United Kingdom. The original lineup was Johnny Rotten on vocals, Steve Jones on guitar, Glen Matlock on bass, and Paul Cook on drums.

In 1977 Syd Vicious replaced Glen Matlock, a change that took place while the band was recording their only studio album, 'Never Mind the Bollocks - Here's the Sex Pistols'. The band also produced a single which has been called the most censored record in British history; a big claim, but 'God Save the Queen', recorded during Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee, was a full-frontal assault on British conformity and acceptance of royal authority, so it is little wonder that the BBC refused to play it!
