Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The story: Two stylish police detectives, Tubbs and Sonny, fighting crime in a southern American city. The TV version was ground-breaking in its stylistic approach and contemporary sound track. The show and movie shared the same name. Can you identify it?

Answer: Miami Vice

"Miami Vice" the television show was praised by critics, including People magazine, for its unique cinematography and music-driven vignettes. It launched Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas into stardom, perhaps temporarily so. The movie, released in 2006, 17 years after the NBC show ended, received mixed reviews and starred Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell.
2. Jack Webb was the creative force behind this police series as well as its star, playing the role of Detective Joe Friday on the radio, on several TV series, and on film. Many years later, a comedic film version starred Dan Aykroyd and Tom Hanks. Can you name this franchise?

Answer: Dragnet

"Dragnet" was Jack Webb's baby for many years. He created the no-nonsense detective Joe Friday of the L.A.P.D. on a radio show and the character never lost his rapid-fire, low-inflection voice. There have been multiple revivals of the franchise on TV and on the silver screen since Detective Friday first appeared in 1951.
3. What is the name of the television show and its film version about a pair of FBI agents investigating unexplained phenomena? It starred David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.

Answer: The X-Files

"The X-Files" broke the mold when it was launched on Fox in 1993. Creator Chris Carter pulled suspenseful elements from such vintage shows as "The Twilight Zone" and "Outer Limits" but the story arcs and conspiracy theories made for a new kind of compelling television.

It originally ran for nine seasons on Fox. The first film, "The X-Files", was released while the series was still on Fox. A second, "The X-Files: I Want to Believe", was released in 2008 to mixed reviews. There was, however, enough interest in the franchise that Fox released a tenth season in 2016.
4. This title began as a lightweight comedy starring Elizabeth Montgomery and Dick York; York was replaced by Dick Sargent later in the series. He was a regular mortal and she was a someone special. The film version cast Nicole Kidman as a woman in a similar situation. Can you name it?

Answer: Bewitched

"Bewitched" was a staple of television in the late 1960s, running on ABC from 1964-1972. Montgomery played Samantha, a witch, married to Darren, a mere mortal. Side characters included Samantha's intense mother, Darren's boss, a nosy neighbor, a flamboyant uncle, a bombastic warlock named Dr. Bombay, a ditzy but lovable Aunt Clara, and at least one twin sister.

The 2005 film was a bit different. Will Farrell played an actor who was cast in a remake of the TV show, and Kidman played a witch who wanted to live a normal human life and finds herself in the remake. Kidman received some acclaim for her portrayal, but the film earned Kidman and Ferrell a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Screen Couple (2005).
5. "Serenity" was a 2005 film that followed a beloved television series had ended after just one season on FOX. The show was written and directed by Joss Whedon and involved humans living in a new star system. Can you name it?

Answer: Firefly

"Firefly" was set on a spaceship named "Serenity." Nathan Fillion starred as Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds, the captain of Serenity; Gina Torres starred as Zoe Alleyne Washburne, the second in command. Most of the TV stars were also featured in the movie. The movie and the TV series received mostly positive reviews, but the ratings were not high enough for the TV program to last more than one season.
6. "Police Squad" ran on ABC in 1982 for only six episodes, but it launched a comedy film franchise with the same star and a different name. Can you name the movie series?

Answer: The Naked Gun

Leslie Nielsen portrayed Sergeant Frank Drebin on the short-lived "Police Squad," after having success with a similar character on the movie "Airplane!," a disaster parody in which Nielsen stole scenes with his deadpan comedic irony. "Police Squad" didn't last, but Nielsen played the character in three films in "The Naked Gun" franchise.

The first film, "The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!" (1988) received positive reviews; the following two, "The Naked Gun 2¨ö: The Smell of Fear" (1991" and "Naked Gun 33¨÷: The Final Insult", did not.
7. "Here's the story of a lovely lady Who was bringing up three very lovely girls All of them had hair of gold, like their mother. The youngest one in curls." This show ran on ABC from 1969 to 1974, and over 20 years later, was made into a movie with a different cast. Can you name the show to which the lyrics above belong?

Answer: The Brady Bunch

"The Brady Bunch" TV series was light-hearted fluff about a blended family with six children. The 1995 movie had a twist -- the Brady family was in the 1990s, but lived as if they were still in the '70s in terms of their dated clothes, hair styles, and attitudes. Most of the original TV cast had small roles in the 1995 film, except for Eve Plumb, who had played middle daughter Jan, and Robert Reed, who had played Mr. Brady and had passed away. Plumb avoided most Brady-related gigs after the original show ended, though by 2008 she began showing up in small reunions with fellow cast members.
8. What is the last name of the teenage detective who had her own show and then a film? Her hometown was Neptune, her father was the sheriff, and Lily was her doomed best friend. Her name was Veronica ______. Can you fill in the blank?

Answer: Mars

"Veronica Mars" actually began as a young adult novel written by Rob Thomas. Thomas then went on to create a show based on his detective which ran for three seasons. The show received critical acclaim but did not fare well in the ratings. The fans never gave up, and after a highly successful Kickstarter campaign, Thomas was able to produce the film "Veronica Mars" in 2014.

The title character was played by Kristen Bell on the small and big screen.
9. The number of movies made about this franchise is gaining on the total number of episodes the TV version had. What is the name of the franchise pertaining to Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, and Starfleet?

Answer: Star Trek

"Star Trek" began with creator Gene Roddenberry's pitch of a space-based show with a format similar to a western: heroes exploring new territory and dealing with unexpected findings. The original television series included just 79 episodes but spawned additional versions in comics, novels, animated series, amusement rides, and films, as well as more television programs.

The first film version of Star Trek was named simply "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" and featured the same stars that were cast in the TV version.
10. "Once upon a time, there were three little girls who went to the police academy. And they were each assigned very hazardous duties. But I took them away from all that, and now they work for me. My name is _____." This was the opening lines to a glam show on ABC starring three beautiful detectives who move from the police force to a private firm. Years later, Drew Barrymore produced a movie version. Can you name it?

Answer: Charlie's Angels

"Charlie's Angel's" made quite a splash when ABC premiered it in 1976. Critics pointed out it was popular more to the beauty of its stars than to its plot or character development. The original cast included Farrah Fawcett as Jill Monroe, Jaclyn Smith as Kelly Garrett, and Kate Jackson as Sabrina Duncan. Drew Barrymore revamped the story and produced a movie version of it in 2000, starring herself, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu.
