Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Though there are at least 2,000 species worldwide, only one Gecko holds a high-level sales position with Geico Insurance Company. Despite his success, his boss suggested in a Geico commercial that the gecko add this to make him "more business-like". What did his boss want him to add?

Answer: A tiny business suit

In this commercial the boss is happy with gecko's ability to save money for customers, but a tiny business suit "might help". Gecko is truly at a loss for words.
2. As the story goes, the Geico gecko had to go to court when a complaint was filed against him for this behavior. (Hint: if you do it, it's against the law). What behavior was it?

Answer: Wearing no pants in public.

Geico gecko's work biography says that a lawsuit complained about gecko's lack of pants. Happily gecko was vindicated. His lawyer argued successfully that as geckos do not wear pants as matter of course, they should not be expected to do so.
3. Which automobile manufacturing company, founded in 1985, uses a gecko as its brand logo? It can be seen on the hubcaps.

Answer: Wiesmann

Wiesmann, located in Germany, is the answer. Cars "stick to the road like geckos to the wall" is their motto. The sticky toe pads on the feet are a source of wonder and inspiration for a growing number of companies. Geckos who have these sticky pads (not all of them do) can walk across a ceiling without problem.
4. Many geckos can't work in sales and so cannot rise up the ranks, because they are awake only at night. But the Geico gecko is of the genus Phelsuma, which means he is this kind.

Answer: A diurnal gecko

Family Gekkonidae, genus Phelsuma, diurnal geckos are able to work as business icons, as well as keep up intensive schedules shooting commercials, because they are wide awake during the day. It is true they occasionally may be found asleep among bananas.
5. Many diurnal geckos originate from Madagascar, but we can tell as he speaks that the Geico gecko, actually, is not from Australia, New Zealand or Madagascar. What kind of accent does he have?

Answer: London Cockney

A good many Australians have been hired in television, movies, theater and advertisement to portray a British character. Most audiences cannot tell British from Australian accent. The Geico company makes light of this confusion in a commercial. Gecko's colleagues debate where he's from.

The Geico gecko is certainly not from Madagascar, where so many geckos originate. If so he'd speak Malagasy, a Malayo-Polynesian language with many Bantu (African) words.
6. How did the Geico gecko first get connected with the Geico Insurance company?

Answer: People called gecko's house asking for Geico.

Gecko had a rough life for a while, including constant wrong number calls to his house. People constantly mispronounced gecko as Geico. Finally gecko went straight to the Geico company about it. Geico was taken with the little green and orange fella who has no eyelids and wears no pants. They hired him on the spot.
7. The Geico gecko may be seen munching on chips, but in the wild geckos eat insects, pollen, and sweet, soft fruits. So it's fitting that this beverage's company has a dancing gecko mascot. Which company is it?

Answer: SoBe

SoBe has a double-gecko logo, as well as a gecko dancing troupe to entertain us in commercials. Unlike the Geico company gecko, who is soft skinned, sweet and big-eyed affable, the SoBe gecko's are ignited, energized and in-your-face.
8. A video game portrays this smart-aleck gecko who jumps, shoots and blocks attack with his shield, in order to achieve his goal--eliminate humans who built the Great Tower. What is the name of the gecko?

Answer: Rex

"Rex" was highly acclaimed. Another video game using the gecko image is "Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko". Here, the wily secret agent gecko saves a damsel in distress, battles enemies and goes on adventures.
9. What did the Geico gecko do in 1999?

Answer: Made his TV debut.

The Geico gecko was voted America's favorite icon in 2005, five years after his television screen debut in 1999-2000.
10. In this commercial, fashion model Naomi Campbell dances with SoBe geckos to the tune of Michael Jackson's "Thriller". They aired during which February 2008 entertainment event?

Answer: Super Bowl

SoBe advertised "Life Water" as Naomi and rows of gecko dancers moved their groove during the Super Bowl. One gecko dancer ate a fellow dancer, a grasshopper. SoBe's gecko's are decidedly reptilian. Shortly after this commercial aired, Campbell was banned from British Airways and charged with assault and disorderly conduct, charges she had faced several times in other circumstances.

She remained a popular super model, but how this negative publicity affected the SoBe geckos is the question.
