Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the end of Book 2: "A King's Ransom", Dan's friend Atticus Rosenbloom (a Guardian) was kidnapped by Vespers Casper and Cheyenne Wyoming. To which country do they take him?

Answer: Turkey

Casper and Cheyenne, in an effort to redeem themselves in the eyes of Vesper One after one too many screwups, transport Atticus to a Vesper stronghold in Göreme, Turkey. Hidden in a deep underground bunker, the Wyomings demand that Atticus give them all the information he knows about being a Guardian.

In an effort to stall, Atticus claims that he only knows the encryption code for access to the information they want, which is hidden on his flash drive, and that it will take time to decode it.
2. Dan and Amy, along with Atticus' brother Jake, are able to track down Atticus just in time to see him manage to escape the Vesper stronghold on his own. In the process, the self-destruct mechanism that he triggers leaves Casper and Cheyenne trapped underground.

Answer: False

After arriving at the stronghold, the twins put Atticus on a computer and gave him half an hour to access the Guardian information ostensibly on his flash drive. As it was only a stalling tactic, Atticus began to panic as his half hour deadline approached. At the last minute he managed to compromise the security system on the Vesper computer, which gave him the prompt "system operations aborting - activate fail-safe? y/n". Responding with the 'y' returned the message "shutting programs ... one hour to self-destruct".

Atticus manages to escape the Wyomings when the alarm sounds and the power shuts everything down, using the confusion to get away. By the time Atticus is able to find his way out (including a dangerous climb), the hour is almost up. A great explosion destroys the underground complex, and Atticus thinks that the Wyomings are dead, but they turn up moments later, guns in hand.
3. Amy forces Vesper One to ensure the safety of the Guardian (no further attempts to kill or kidnap) in exchange for revealing the next location found in the Marco Polo text ("Il Milione"). Where do they need to go next?

Answer: Samarkand, Uzbekistan

Samarkand is an ancient city, founded in the 7th century BC and an important city on the Silk Road between China and the Mediterranean. Vesper One gives Amy a cryptic clue to find 'a stale orb', and then also gives her a time limit of four days before he will kill a hostage.
4. Vesper One gives the Cahills four days to find the next item, then demands that Amy name who among the hostages will die if they are unsuccessful. Who is chosen?

Answer: Alistair Oh

Cruelly, he gives Amy 30 seconds to provide the name of who will be the one to die, or let it be a random choice. At the last moment, Dan grabs the phone from Amy and names Alistair Oh - the logical choice, he claims, because Nellie, Reagan, Natalie, Phoenix and Ted are young, and Fiske is their great uncle.

While Alistair is still part of the larger Cahill clan, he is a more distant relative.
5. Unable to catch a flight to their next location until the next morning, the Cahills and Rosenblooms (and Erasmus, who met them at the airport) go to a hotel to wait. Amy and Dan get tricked into following a man (claiming to be Erasmus' cousin) out of the hotel, where they are captured. By whom?

Answer: Interpol agent Milos Vanek

Ever since the Cahills were forced to steal the Caravaggio from the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Vanek has been tracking them through their travels. He had been narrowly eluded on the train in Switzerland, and finally caught up to them here in Turkey.

To Amy and Dan's horror, Vanek informs them that it will be between one and three weeks until they can schedule a hearing to deal with them. With less than four days until Alistair will be killed, Amy and Dan are horrified.
6. The seven hostage family members continue to make efforts to find a means of escape. This time they disable the dumbwaiter that brings their meals and gain access to the shaft above it. Who climbs up the 12 feet of cable in an effort to ambush their captors?

Answer: Reagan Holt and Phoenix Wizard

The group executed a well-planned effort. The moment the dumbwaiter opened with their bread and water, Fiske and Alistair blinded the cameras with wet tissues while Reagan and Nellie maneuvered a bed to jam the dumbwaiter open. Phoenix and Ted joined them and helped lift the bed up, using it as a lever to push the dumbwaiter down, revealing the space above the chamber. As soon as the space was big enough, Phoenix and Reagan squeezed into the opening and climbed up the cable.

Unfortunately, it is all for naught. When they get up to the room above, they discover that their guards have everything under surveillance... including the dumbwaiter shaft. They never have a chance as the guards incapacitate them with knockout gas.
7. Who is revealed to be Vesper Five?

Answer: Interpol agent Luna Amato

After their capture by Vanek, Luna Amato uses her status as a fellow Interpol agent to release Amy and Dan out of their holding cell, and she takes them to a supposed friend's house. She makes them dinner and claims to be moved by their story of blackmail by people holding their family members hostage.

After supper, while Amato is in the kitchen cleaning up, Amy receives a text telling her that Amato is actually Vesper Five. The siblings quickly make their escape, not realizing that that was Amato's whole intent, in order to allow the Cahill kids to continue their mission.
8. Back in the United States, Ian Kabra leaves the Cahill Control Center in Attleboro to go to New York City to see his estranged mother Isabel. After confronting her, Ian decides to go to the country where Isabel's 'Aid Works Wonders' UN initiative is underway. Which country?

Answer: Argentina

Knowing his mother to be a ruthless person (who even shot her own daughter during the Clue Hunt), Ian cannot believe that Isabel has actually become a humanitarian aid worker. He decides to go down to Argentina to investigate the AWW site for himself. When he gets there, his suspicions are confirmed when all he finds is a sham location that had been used for the promotional video.

Ian, however, complicates matters for himself by failing to inform his fellow Cahills of what he is doing. When Amy and Dan learn that the hostages are being held in Argentina, his trip there causes the others to view him with suspicion.
9. Amy finally manages to decipher Vesper One's cryptic clue, anagramming 'a stale orb' to come up with 'astrolabe', an important tool used by astronomers, navigators and astrologers. Who is the great 15th century ruler (and astronomer) who made this astrolabe and in whose Observatory it is found?

Answer: Ulugh Beg

Ulugh Beg of Samarkand was born Mīrzā Muhammad Tāraghay bin Shāhrukh in AD 1394. The name 'Ulugh Beg' was more of a title, meaning 'great ruler'. He ruled a large area in Central Asia (an area including six modern-day countries) from AD 1411 to 1449.

Ulugh Beg made Samarkand a center of culture and learning during his rule, constructing his great Observatory, as well as his Madrasah (a university).

The Cahills and Rosenblooms are able to find the astrolabe by deciphering the clues in a poem about Ulugh Beg.
10. The astrolabe is delivered to Vesper One just in time; Amy and Dan are immediately given new instructions. Still under the Vespers' thumb, Dan Cahill continues to secretly gather the '39 Clues' ingredients, planning to make the serum for himself. By the end of "The Dead of Night", how many has he amassed?

Answer: Seventeen

By the end of the second book ("A King's Ransom"), Dan had gathered thirteen ingredients. During the events of "The Dead of Night" he finds four more, including the most difficult to find (in Dan's opinion), the secretions of the Bombyx mori silk moth.
