Harry Potter Maths! Trivia Quiz

This quiz is based on my joint passion for Harry Potter and maths. Basically you have to do basic sums involving values from the books. You'll see what I mean... (By the way do not rearrange any of the sums, do them as they are)

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Here's a simple one to kick things off: The number of best friends Harry has + the number of beaters on a Quidditch team =

Answer: 4

Harry has two best friends. I won't insult your intelligence by saying who they are. There are two beaters on a Quidditch team.
2. The number of years Sirius spent in Azkaban + the number of people he was accused of killing with a single curse =

Answer: 25

Sirius (Sob! It's painful just thinking about him) escaped after spending 12 years in Azkaban. He was accused of murdering 13 people; 12 Muggles and Wormtail. In fact only the 12 Muggles died, and it was Wormtail that killed them.
3. The age Harry was when he found out he was a wizard minus the number of schools that took part in the Triwizard Tournament =

Answer: 8

Harry was 11 (just) and in a shack out to sea when he found out that he was a wizard. Three schools; Hogwarts, Durmstrang and Beauxbatons took part in the Triwizard Tournament. Due to Barty Crouch (Jr)'s meddling however, the Goblet of Fire believed that four schools were taking part. Never send a cup to do a wizard's job.
4. The length of Harry's wand plus the number of points Harry won for Gryffindor for saving the Philosopher's Stone =

Answer: 71

Harry's wand (holly and phoenix feather "nice and supple") is 11 inches. He won 60 points for Gryffindor, bringing them equal with Slytherin. It hardly seems fair that he lost 50 points just for being out of bed at night and he only got 60 for stopping the most evil wizard ever from resuming his reign of terror.
5. The house number of the Order of the Phoenix HQ on Grimmauld Place x (multiplied by) the number of Dementors that attacked Harry and Dudley at the beginning of "Phoenix" =

Answer: 24

Two Dementors attacked Harry and Dudley, attempting to kiss them until Harry's patronus charged them away. The HQ of the Order of the Phoenix (Sirius' house) is at 12 Grimmauld Place.
6. The number of Lestranges who were sent to Azkaban plus the length of Voldemort's wand =

Answer: 16 1/2

Three Lestranges were sent to Azkaban - Bellatrix and Rodolphus as well as Rodolphus' brother Rabastan. Voldemort's wand (yew and containing one of Fawkes' feathers) was 13 1/2 inches.
7. The number of years Nearly Headless Nick had been dead for in "Chamber" minus the number of potions in Snape's task guarding the Philosopher's Stone =

Answer: 493

In "Chamber" it was Nick's 500th Deathday. There were seven potions; three were poison, two held "only nettle wine," one would get the drinker safely backwards and one would get the drinker forwards through the black fire.
8. The number of brothers Ron has multiplied by the total number of books in the original series (once they've all been written, and excluding books such as "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.") =

Answer: 35

Ron has five brothers; Bill, Charlie, Percy, Fred and George. There will be seven books in total. Wonder how long away that will be...
9. The day (i.e the 5th etc) of Harry's birthday minus the month (i.e January would be 1, February would be 2 etc) =

Answer: 24

It's Harry's birthday on 31st July. The Dursleys have never acknowledged his birthday, but have sent Harry some very ordinary Christmas gifts, including a pair of Uncle Vernon's old socks, a toothpick, 50p and a tissue. Lucky, lucky boy.
10. This one should weed out the weaklings. (Please do each part of this sum in sequence, applying each step to the answer from the previous one.). Brace yourself... The number of names Dumbledore has (including his surname) plus the number of heads Fluffy had minus the number of siblings Sirius had. Take this answer and multiply it by the number the Hungarian Horntail had round its neck (the model that Harry pulled out of the bag) THEN add the number of "muggle owners" the opal necklace in Mr Borgin's shop had killed. What number do you get?

Answer: 47

Well done to all (!) of you that got this one right! Here is how it works: Dumbledore has 5 names (Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore), Fluffy had 3 heads, Sirius had 1 brother called Regulus who became a Death Eater and was killed by them, the Hungarian Horntail had a 4 round its neck meaning that Harry went last in the first task and the opal necklace in Mr Borgin's shop has killed 19 muggle owners to date. (5+3-1)x4+19=47
