Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What did the blockade prevent the Tuckers from including in their Saturday supper?

Answer: Molasses

The British blockade on Boston Harbor during the War of 1812 prevented any merchant ships from delivering molasses, among other things, to Roxbury. Charlotte was surprised when the molasses was missing from the family's cornmeal pudding, the meal reserved for the special Saturday night suppers.
2. About what kind of animal did Charlotte like to listen to Will talk?

Answer: Bird

Will Payson worked as a striker for Charlotte's father in the smithy and boarded with the Tuckers. Charlotte enjoyed listening to Will because he respected her and had a vast knowledge of things that interested Charlotte, including birds.
3. What book did Charlotte's mother use to make sure the garden was coming along on schedule?

Answer: The Farmer's Almanack

"The Farmer's Almanack" was a helpful guide the Tuckers read for advice and information on matters such as elections, the weather, and gardening.
4. Why did Charlotte attempt to travel to Scotland on her own one spring morning?

Answer: To see a fairy

After hearing her mother's story of the fairy's nursemaid, Charlotte made up her mind that she must see a fairy with her own eyes. Unaware of the many months it would actually take to travel across the sea, Charlotte thought she would make it to the fairies' native Scotland and back to Roxbury before dinner.
5. What did Tom break in his and Charlotte's dinner basket?

Answer: Cookies

For Tom and Charlotte's first day of school, Mama packed them a dinner basket with bread, cheese, and ginger cookies. Carelessly, Tom threw his schoolbook into the basket and swung the basket around, resulting in a jumble of broken cookies that did not taste as good, to Charlotte, as whole cookies.
6. Where did Charlotte and Susan get the impression that they would get to ride in a coach?

Answer: A school verse

Part of a verse that Charlotte and Susan learned at school read "But he that learns his letters fair Shall have a Coach and take the Air." The girls took this to mean they would get to ride in a coach if they learned their ABCs.
7. What did Charlotte name her doll?

Answer: Emmeline

Charlotte's friend, Susan, wished for a sister named Emmeline, but let Charlotte use the name for her clothespin doll when Susan got a baby brother.
8. What spice did Mama put too much of in the cheese?

Answer: Cayenne

Upset and distracted by the British attack on Washington City, Mama absentmindedly shook so much cayenne into the mixing bowl that it created a dust cloud. After her children reacted so strangely, Mama tasted a bite of the cheese herself and deemed unfit for even a pig.
9. What poem did Mr. Davis read aloud in Papa's smithy?

Answer: Defense of Fort McHenry

Mr. Davis, a man from the Tucker's church, came into the smithy one fall day, waving a newspaper and announcing the British attack on Baltimore. In the newspaper was a poem by lawyer Francis Key called "Defense of Fort McHenry." The poem was set to the tune of "Anacreon in Heaven" and later became the American national anthem.
10. What kind of party was held in October at the Tucker's house and then at the Heath's house?

Answer: Apple-paring

At fun apple-paring parties, the ladies peeled, cored, and sliced baskets of apples, and the older girls strung apple slices to hang from the rafters and dry (keeping longer than fresh apples). The younger children played a game called Apple Snap, which Charlotte won at the second party.
