Jodie dies at the end of the book. On bonfire night she decided to play a trick, so she went to the top of the tower and pretended to be a ghost. She lent forward, and toppled over the edge, out of the window.

They called the baby May because she was born in May, so she's their little May (that is what Pearl calls her in the book).
