"The Penultimate Peril" - Book #12 Quiz

If you drop any small thing into water, it will cause a ripple effect, thus changing everything reflected on its surface. On the other hand, avoiding the twelfth story of the Baudelaire children entirely, might actually change things for the better.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Kit Snicket is pregnant.

Answer: True

At the end of our previous "Unfortunate Events", the Baudelaires jumped into Kit Snicket's taxi and drove through the city that was once their home. Along the way, Kit drove the taxi off of the road to evade possible enemies, and she gave the Baudelaires a very brief explanation about their situation before heading off to find Captain Widdershins.
2. What is 'La Forza del Destino'?

Answer: An opera

This opera was the one which the Baudelaire parents saw on their last night alive. Through the story, it is brought up time and time again because of the way that it coincidentally has some common events. For example, at one point, a character is shot and killed when a gun is accidentally shot.
3. What number can be found on the elevator doors in the Hotel Denouement?

Answer: 118

The Baudelaire orphans dress up as concierges and begin their new jobs as flaneurs in order to find out who at the Hotel Denouement is a volunteer and who is an enemy. Their managers, Frank and Ernest, were particularly confusing to distinguish. Both looked identical, yet one was an enemy and one was a volunteer.
The Hotel Denouement was also quite odd. Not only was the building on a weird angle, but the whole building was organized by the Dewey Decimal Library System. 118 was the force and energy section, so the elevators were placed in it.
4. While performing her duties as a concierge, what was Violet forced to bring to Carmelita and Esmé?

Answer: A harpoon gun

The Baudelaires split up to perform their errands for various people in the hotel. Violet took the job up on the roof where the rooftop sunbathing salon was located, and she was forced to retrieve a harpoon gun for Carmelita (who was now a ballplaying cowboy superhero soldier pirate). Luckily, no one could recognize Violet as a Baudelaire because of her disguise.
5. While performing his duties as a concierge, Klaus ended up discovering that Sir and Charles were staying at the Hotel Denouement. What other unfortunate book can Sir and Charles be found in?

Answer: The Miserable Mill

Klaus decides to take the task at room 674, the lumber processing and wood products room. When he arrives, he runs into Sir and Charles (who don't recognize him in the concierge disguise), and he has to take them to the sauna just down the hallway. He ends up sneaking in on a conversation, and he puts birdpaper on the window shutters for Frank or Ernest.
6. While performing her duties as a concierge, Sunny had to show guests to a restaurant. What kind of food was served at the restaurant?

Answer: Indian

Sunny took the job at the educational guest room at room 371. When she arrived, she found Vice Principal Nero, Mr. Remora, and Mrs. Bass from Prufrock Preparatory School in "The Austere Academy". Sunny had to escort the three to 954 where they were served Indian food by Hal from "The Hostile Hospital". Sunny was then instructed to place the Vernacularly Fastened Door lock on the laundry room in the basement.
7. In the story often told by the Baudelaire orphans' father, how many blind men tried to describe an elephant?

Answer: Six

In a story by American writer John Godfrey Saxe, six blind men are feeling different parts of an elephant, and each one has a different opinion as to what it is. The Baudelaires bring the story up when they realize that there's a mystery behind every door of the hotel, and they can't figure out who's a volunteer, and who's an enemy.
8. What is the name of the third Denouement triplet?

Answer: Dewey

Dewey Denouement gains his trust in the children by reciting a bit of John Godfrey Saxe's poem after he unexpectedly arrives in the hotel lobby. Dewey had worked for many years as a volunteer by compiling information about every investigation in VFD. His works are stored under the pond in front of the Hotel Denouement.
9. Which of these doesn't describe one of the phrases needed to unlock the lock on the Vernacularly Fastened Door?

Answer: A poisonous fungus that will release deadly spores when in full bloom

Justice Strauss and Jerome Squalor arrive at the hotel to help the Baudelaires, but Count Olaf also makes his appearance. When Dewey is threatened with the harpoon gun, he gives vague hints to the phrases needed to open the Vernacularly Fastened Door, and when it's opened eventually, nothing is inside the room. It was a decoy lock.
10. What was not a piece of evidence submitted during the trial on Wednesday afternoon?

Answer: Peppermints

Justice informs everyone that the trial has been made on an earlier date, and everyone in the hotel attends. Many people submit evidence (which includes one man's mother) while wearing blindfolds (because 'justice is blind'), and no one knows that Justice is being held captive by Count Olaf until the Baudelaires realize that something is fishy.

They manage to chase Olaf to the elevator and they proceed to open the laundry room. When they realize that nothing is inside, they decide to burn down the hotel in order to escape and make a signal for Kit Snicket, and they head to the roof to board Olaf's boat.

In the end, Olaf and the orphans are all in the same boat as the last safe place burns to the ground.
