Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is sorted after Neville Longbottom?

Answer: Morag MacDougal

Neville, who was first introduced into the story on the train while he was searching for his toad Trevor, fell over in anxiety and fear on his way to the stool. Apparently, the hat took a long time to decide, making Neville even more nervous, which led to his leaping off the stool and attempting to leave with the hat still on.

He had to "jog back amid gales of laughter to give it to 'MacDougal, Morag.'"
2. What qualities does the Sorting Hat see in Harry when it is trying to sort him?

Answer: Courage, intelligence, talent, thirst to prove himself

The Sorting Hat is quoted as saying: "Hmm... Difficult. Very difficult. Plenty of courage, I see. Not a bad mind either. There's talent, oh my goodness, yes - and a nice thirst to prove yourself, now that's interesting... so where shall I put you?" It is at this time that Harry silently prays to not be sorted into Slytherin, whereupon the Sorting Hat places him in Gryffindor.
3. What is the last line of the school song?

Answer: "And learn until our brains all rot"

Dumbledore leads the song, saying: "Everyone pick their favorite tune... and off we go!" The entire song is:

"Hogwarts, Hogwarts, Hoggy Warty Hogwarts,
Teach us something please,
Whether we be old and bald
Or young with scabby knees,
Our heads could do with filling
With some interesting stuff,
For now they're bare and full of air,
Dead flies and bits of fluff,
So teach us things worth knowing,
Bring back what we've forgot,
Just do your best, we'll do the rest,
And learn until our brains all rot."

The Weasleys are the last ones to finish, singing the song to a "very slow funeral march".
4. What can monkshood and wolfsbane also be called?

Answer: Aconite

This explanation comes when Professor Snape is trying to demean Harry in front of the class. He begins by asking Harry the question: "What's the difference, Potter, between monkshood and wolfsbane?" He follows this up, when he realizes Harry cannot answer, with: "As for monkshood and wolfsbane, they are the same plant, which also goes by the name of aconite."
5. What was the title of the article on the Daily Prophet clipping beneath Hagrid's tea cozy?

Answer: Gringotts Break-In Latest

The clipping, which Harry and Ron saw while they were on a visit to Hagrid's house, read:

"GRINGOTTS BREAK-IN LATEST
Investigations continue into the break-in at Gringotts on 31 July, widely believed to be the work of Dark wizards or witches unknown. Gringotts goblins today insisted that nothing had been taken. The vault that was searched had in fact been emptied the same day. 'But we're not telling you what was in there, so keep your noses out if you know what's good for you,' said a Gringotts spokesgoblin this afternoon."

Harry exclaims that he and Hagrid were at Gringotts on the same day as the break-in. He takes note that Hagrid does not meet his eye.
6. What is the name of the broomstick that Ron mentions at the breakfast table when Harry receives his Nimbus 2000?

Answer: A Comet Two Sixty

Malfoy saunters over and tells Harry: "That's a broomstick... you'll be in for it this time, Potter, first years aren't allowed them." This causes Ron to jump in and say that Harry has not only a broomstick, but the BEST broomstick, a Nimbus 2000. He goes on to say that Malfoy probably is stuck riding a Comet Two Sixty, which "look flashy, but they're not in the same league as the Nimbus." Malfoy then slams Ron and his family, saying: "What would you know about it, Weasley, you couldn't afford half the handle... I suppose you and your brothers have to save up twig by twig."
7. What is the name of the Slytherin Seeker who is playing against Harry during the first match?

Answer: Terrence Higgs

Harry and Terrence Higgs see the Snitch at the same time, rushing neck and neck to get it. Harry is faster on his new broom and is about to secure the shining golden ball, when Slytherin captain Marcus Flint severely blocks him and almost sends Harry toppling off of his broom, and spinning off course.

In the stands, Dean Thomas, who was raised with muggles, cries "Red card!", meaning that he wanted Flint to exit from the game for the rest of the match. Terrence Higgs was not mentioned again, nor did he appear in the movies by name.
8. When Harry finds his "lost" invisibility cloak, there is a note pinned to it. What does this note say?

Answer: Just in case

Harry leaves his cloak at the top of the tower after going up there with Hermione to send off Norbert with some of Charlie's friends. When the pair comes back down, they are met with Filch, realizing that they left the cloak behind. We learn later that this is Dumbledore's handwriting and that he is the one who returned it.

He's also the one who gave it to Harry for Christmas, having held on to it ever since James Potter passed away.
9. When Professor McGonagall pulls Harry out of flying lessons, she asks Professor Flitwick to "see Wood". What does Harry think "Wood" is?

Answer: A cane

When Harry flew into the air to try and secure the Remembrall that Malfoy took from Neville, McGonagall sees him out of her office window. She orders him to follow her down the hallways, which make him extremely nervous and anxious. When the REAL Wood is revealed to be a burly fifth-year boy, Professor McGonagall commends Harry on his amazing ability and then assigns him the spot of Seeker on the Quidditch team.

He is the youngest player on a House team in about a century.
10. What is the number of the vault from which Hagrid retrieves the package at Gringotts?

Answer: 713

Harry and Hagrid are riding deep into Gringotts in a cart whirring along the track, which makes Hagrid very uneasy and quite queasy. When they reach the vault door, Harry notices that there is no keyhole. Griphook, the goblin guide accompanying Harry and Hagrid, "stroked the door with one of his long fingers and it simply melted away." Griphook boasts that if anyone other than a goblin had done the same thing that they would be sucked through the door and get stuck inside.

When Harry asks him about how often they check for people locked inside, Griphook chillingly answers: "About once every ten years."
