Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Flibbertigibbet! Many know this word to mean a crazy or whimsical person, particularly a young woman from "The Sound of Music". However, in a Shakespearean play, Flibbertigibbet was one of the five fiends that possessed Edgar. What play was this?

Answer: King Lear

William Shakespeare wrote "King Lear" around 1605. In the play, Edgar is claimed to be possessed by five different fiends. One of these fiends is "Flibbertygibbet", which is used to mean "fiend", "sprite", or "devil".

Maria from "The Sound of Music" is called a "flibbertygibbet" in the song "Maria": "How do you solve a problem like Maria? How do you catch a cloud and pin it down? How do you find a word that means Maria? A flibbertigibbet! A will-o'-the wisp! A clown!"

2. Ben Franklin is remembered for a lot of famous sayings. Which of these did he say?

Answer: Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

Benjamin Franklin was born in 1706 and died in 1790. He was known for many things: he discovered electricity using a kite and a key, invented bifocals, signed the Declaration of Independence, and was a very famous politician. He was such a famous politician that some in Europe, even today, believed him to be a President of the United States, though he never was. Benjamin Franklin was known for all sorts of saying, many coming from his "Poor Richard's Almanack". Perhaps you recall "a penny saved is a penny earned" or "early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise"?

3. Before CDs and flash drives, computer users relied on magnetic disks, often 3.5" wide, to store and transport data. What name did these disks go by?

Answer: Floppy

Floppy disks, a form of magnetic storage, were introduced to the tech world by IBM in 1971. Early floppies were eight inches wide and encased in thin plastic that tended to "flop"; they held just 100 kilobytes! Later, hard plastic 3.5" diskettes became popular. Their capacity of 1.44 megabytes, however, is barely enough to hold even one song file. In the name of efficiency, floppies have had to go the way of the dinosaur.
