Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the "K" marsupial of Australia that lives in eucalyptus trees and eats the leaves?

Answer: Koala

Koalas are marsupials found in the states of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia in the country of Australia. A marsupial is an animal that typically gives birth to, and carries its young in pouches. Koalas are grey or brown, and are usually 60-85 cm (24-33 in) tall and weigh 4-15 kg (9-33 lb). Koalas are herbivores, living off of the eucalyptus trees that grow in their home ranges.

The koalas often called a "koala bear", but this is a misnomer. The koala is not related to any species of bear.

Its closest relative is the wombat. The koala is listed as a species at risk of extinction in some areas due to threats caused by climate change and urbanization. Kangaroo is another "K" marsupial, but kangaroos don't live in eucalyptus trees, so that was an incorrect answer in this case.
2. What is the the "K" flightless bird of New Zealand that has a long flexible bill?

Answer: Kiwi

There are five species of kiwi in New Zealand. All are flightless with hair-like feathers. They are currently species of concern in New Zealand, with all five species either vulnerable or near-threatened. Traditionally, a threat to these chicken-sized birds was habitat loss, but invasive predators are now more of a threat as the country has moved to protect its traditional habitats.

A kiwi's egg is the largest in proportion of the female's body weight of all birds at 20% of the body weight. Kiwi form monogamous pairs for their entire lives.

They also have nostrils at the ends of their long pointed beaks that help them to detect the smell of both food and predators. This is an unusual anatomical feature of these birds that seems to have helped them develop an outstanding and efficient olfactory system.
3. What is the "K" long structure running from front to back under a boat, upon which the ship is built?

Answer: Keel

In this context, the word keel is used as a noun. The keel forms the stabilizing structure that runs from front to back on the middle of the underside of boats. In some cases, the keel is extended down in a blade-like ridge in order to act as a stabilizer for the ship. Keel can also be a verb if used to mean capsized or flipped on its side. E.g., The boat will not keel over unless strong winds are present.
4. What is the "K" surname of the American comic silent-film actor who starred in the film, "The General" (1926)?

Answer: Keaton

Buster Keaton was an American silent film star who was first active from 1920-29. He acted and directed in a number of comedy films during that time. "The General" (1926) is regarded by many as the best film made during the silent era. Keaton was acting and directing independently during this time, but signed with a movie studio in 1928 at which point he lost his creative independence.

His career slid, he became an alcoholic, and his wife left him. He recovered, and remarried, and went on to more roles in movies and on television from the 1940s on. Buster Keaton died of lung cancer at the age of 70 on February 1, 1966.
5. What is the world's second highest peak ,sometimes also known as Mount Godwin-Austen?

Answer: K2

K2 is 8,611 metres (28,251 ft) high, the second-highest mountain in the world after Mount Everest. K2 is found in the the Karakoram range in Pakistan. When explorers were initially surveying the mountains, they gave each an identifier with "K" (for the name of the mountain range), then a number in the order that the mountains were surveyed.

The Great Trigonometrical Survey of British India was completing the survey. Their rules for naming the mountains was to use a local name when possible. K2 was quite remote, so it did not have a local name.

The name Mount Godwin-Austen (or Mount Godwin Austen) was suggested because there was no local name. This was to honour Henry Godwin-Austen, an early explorer. However, the Royal Geographical Society rejected the name.

Despite this, it it was used on several early maps, so the name is still occasionally used well into the 21st century.

After the Surgeon General of the United States warned of the dangers of smoking in 1964, people around the country became aware of the ill-effects of smoking cigarettes. Savalas, who was a smoker, used lollipops to try to lessen his reliance on cigarettes.

He brought this same behaviour to the tapings of the shows. After the show was cancelled, Savalas starred in two "Kojak" television movies. These included "Kojak: The Belarus File" (1985) and "Kojak: The Price of Justice" (1987).
