Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Cinema: Which of these movies might you find on an actual list naming The Worst ever made?

Answer: Got it! It's a recent one, actually. Called "A Gnome Named Gnorm", released in 1992. An abysmal mess it was. Something about a gnome wanting to become a hero by stealing magical pebbles. Dreadful!..

Gnorm was just an average gnome, it seems. He decided to steal pebbles that would make him more magnetic to lady gnomes. Hmmm. From what I read that is the whole plot! Anthony Michael Hall (who got a good start in "The Breakfast Club" [1985] - he played the genius there...) starred in this disaster. So much for a good career move! And since I made up the other three it is the only movie that ever really happened.
2. Criminals: Which one is true about these executed killers?

Answer: The fanatical Timothy McVeigh, responsible for that bombing in Oklahoma City, requested (and got) what he hoped for as his last meal. The very last "meal" he ingested, believe it or not, was two pints of mint chocolate ice cream.

McVeigh was put to death on June 10, 2001 for his part in the decimation of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in April 1995. His accomplice, Terry Nichols, remains in jail. The reason for that [Nichols still here and McVeigh not] is that Timothy opted not to fight his conviction and wanted to 'get it over with'. 149 adults and 19 children died in the senseless bombing. McVeigh was 33 years old upon his death, but apparently never lost a passion for ice cream.
3. World Records: Name a feat that became one!

Answer: All Hail The Nerd! In 2004 a man in Germany took only 11.8 seconds to calculate the 13th root of a randomly given 100-digit number in his head. Hmmm. The big question now is: Can he balance his checkbook?

It was Gert Mittring from Frankfurt, the math wizard. Unfortunately, while holding the world record now, he could not be included in the Guinness book. Due to the difficulty in standardizing root calculations of random numbers, they had no real spot for him there.

But it IS all documented. The record holder prior to Mr. Mittring had a fastest time of 13.55 seconds. The other three answers are total bunk.
4. U.S. Presidents: The Presidential roster has some strange/interesting trivia attached...Like what?

Answer: George Washington had many dogs in his life. One of them he named 'Drunkard'. My guess is that ol' George liked to take a nip now and then.

George, George, George. A dog named Drunkard - not to mention at least three of the others named Tipsy, Taster and Tippler! Can't you just imagine him telling Martha: "Dear, I'm going to go out and get Tipsy.". She might have not thought twice, figuring he was going out to bring the dog in! Truth is, no one really knows why he gave them such names.

There are already so many legends attached to him, but this one is actually a verifiable fact.
5. Notable People: Time Magazine annually selects a Person Of The Year, but then highlights some others that were considered. Anything odd in the 2004 list?

Answer: "Person Of The Year'? Since when is a four-legged animal a person? George Bush won the prize but he was up against, I'm not kidding, a well-trained hoofed mammal! (I'd have voted for the latter...)

While not winning the Triple Crown (he had a breathtakingly exciting run in The Kentucky Derby and Preakness but he failed to win The Belmont), Smarty Jones's whole story around him made it all like a feel-good movie. First of all, he is owned by a sickly car dealer and his wife - not, as is usually the case, a multimillionaire.

The jockey who rode him is a recovering alcoholic. The surprise winner at Belmont gracefully even apologized for, using Time's phrasing, ending 'The Smarty Party'. Note: interestingly the magazine did highlight a TV show - but it was "Desperate Housewives", not "Friends".
6. Food: Which of these is right about "Head Cheese"?

Answer: Ugh! It comes from the edible parts of a pig or calf's head - they then make a jellied 'loaf' out of it and then slice it. People make sandwiches and stuff out of it. Some find it a delicacy.

Head Cheese is also known as souse or brawn. Initially it used the edible parts of a calf or pig's head. They would cook those until the meat fell off the bone and form a jelled loaf using it. It was entirely a peasant dish. It is still available now but you might find the 'tasty' parts of feet, tongue and hearts in it, too, among other things to spice it up.

It is a reasonably inexpensive cold cut now and, at least here in the States, very popular in the African American community. I think it came down to not wanting to waste anything at some point.

In many ways, it is much like the hot dog.
7. Names of things: Things often are named unusually and perhaps inexplicably. Name one of the following that is true!

Answer: There is a large salamander called the Hellbender. It's not at all mean, devilish or rowdy; in fact it is a popular pet here and there.

The Hellbender lives its life in water, preferably cool and clean streams. It has been known to live (in captivity) for 29 years. In normal conditions the female will lay several hundred ping pong ball sized eggs - the male guards them - and they hatch in winter.

They are decreasing in population these days, due to siltation [which makes nesting difficult for them] and the building of dams. Humans aren't helping much. Water pollution and taking them out of their natural habitat, and it seems like too many people are grabbing up the females as pets, are urgently diminishing their numbers.

They are harmless to people. They will bite, but only if you basically ask for it, while not being at all poisonous.
8. Gender Benders: Which of the following made a name for his or herself by doing it?

Answer: Craig Russell, of course. He was a Canadian bloke who impersonated women with an almost scary flair. Put a wig on him and he was anybody from Bette Davis to Mae West!

Every time I watch the movie "Outrageous" (1977) I am dazzled. Russell was something, that's for sure! But the movie wasn't controversial or sickening or even sexual. It was about an intense friendship (albeit an odd one). Craig Russell didn't make it to his 40th birthday (he died in 1990), but his life was so colorful! He certainly knew how to tear up the stage when the spotlight hit him. To note: Teena Brandon was the character in "Boys Don't Cry".

Not that name I came up with.
9. American Indians: Which of these applies?

Answer: Sacheen Littlefeather, she who turned down that Oscar for Marlon Brando, was really just an actress (with some Apache blood in her veins).

Sacheen Cruz Littlefeather WAS an Apache. But she was really more of a self-promoting actress. Brando got his second Oscar in 1973 for "The Godfather" and decided to reject it because of the treatment of American Indians. And she got picked as his spokesperson that night. What one has to do with the other I still don't know.

But she got her 15 minutes of fame and Marlon went down, sort of, in history for doing it up the way he did.
10. Books: "The Dreyfus Affair: A Love Story". What the heck was THAT one about?

Answer: A baseball player, a notable one at that, decides he likes men more than women - and gets caught in a compromising position. It was funny to read and pretty well done in the early 1990s.

Peter Lefcourt wrote it right. I really enjoyed the book, but I never thought that baseball players were anything more than just regular people. They were supposed to make a movie based on this book, but it never happened. Probably a bit too hard to cast correctly.

I had fun with this! I hope you did as well.
