Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What city in Wisconsin is often referred to as "Seventy square miles surrounded by reality"?

Answer: Madison

Although this is often quoted, it is not clear if it refers to the liberal political leaning of the people of Madison or a slap at the seat of state government. As a citizen of Madison, I think it is both. Nestled amid four lakes, Madison is also host to the University of Wisconsin, the Oscar Meyer Wiener Wagon, and a host of insurance companies. Madison frequently makes the lists as one of the better cities to live.
2. What state borders Wisconsin to the north?

Answer: Michigan

Wisconsin borders what is called the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. People in downstate Michigan often forget that it is part their state. Some serious attempts have been made to have the UP secede from Michigan but that doesn't seem to be on the cards.
3. What two Great Lakes have shorelines in Wisconsin?

Answer: Michigan and Superior

Lake Michigan makes up the eastern coast of Wisconsin. Lake Superior takes up much of the northern boundary. Superior and its neighbor Duluth, MN form twin ports. Iron ore is the product most shipped but shipping traffic has decreased due to competition with trucks and railroads.

Much of the raw materials for the steel industry flowed across these waters which are believed formed by the receding ice age.
4. He served a number of political offices including Congressional Representative, Governor of Wisconsin and Senator from Wisconsin. In 1924 he ran on the Progressive Ticket winning Wisconsin and 17% of the popular vote. Many of his descendants held public office in the State. Who was this national leader from Wisconsin?

Answer: Robert LaFollette

Lafollette's sons, Bob Jr. and Phillip, both were prominent political characters in Wisconsin. The Progressive Party was a more liberal wing of the Republican Party. It was loosely organized and but came to life when a popular independent candidate ran for President such as Teddy Roosevelt and "Fighting Bob" Lafollette.
5. He became a Senator from Wisconsin citing his WWII war experiences, much of which was proven false later. During his ten years in the Senate, he became an aggressive anti-communist, accusing the State Department and the US Army of harboring Communists and "fellow-travelers". His accusations were poorly based and his support dwindled. What was this man's name?

Answer: Joe McCarthy

McCarthy took the advantage of the fear of the spread of Communism that followed WWII. He left a trail of broken careers and a lowering of respect from his congressional peers. After the McCarthy-Army Hearing, which lasted 36 televised days, he was discredited and was censured by the Senate. After that, little was heard for "Tail-gunner Joe". He died at 48 in Bethesda Naval Hospital of complications of chronic alcoholism.

"McCarthyism", meaning accusations that are untrue or poorly documented for the purpose of causing distrust of an individual or group, is now in the dictionary.

(An aside--Senator Karl Mundt chaired the Army-McCarthy Hearings. While in college, when Mundt returned home to South Dakota, I had the honor, be it slight, of pumping gas into his Studebaker. He would smile and shake hands but never talked about Washington.)
6. Near Spring Green, Wisconsin is a house considered a landmark in the history of architecture. One of the great architects of the 20th century not only built it but made it his home. He called it Taliesin. Promising young architects were invited there to learn and work with the great master. Who was this great architect?

Answer: Frank Lloyd Wright

Later Wright built a second Taliesin in Arizona. Wright was also known for his flamboyant life style and sparked controversy wherever he went.

Pei is a world famous architect. His most familiar work is the Rock and Roll Museum in Cleveland, Ohio.

Fuller did not invent the geodesic dome but he did popularize the style.

Gropuis is father of the Bauhaus style.
7. In his sixteen years as a Green Bay Packer, he accumulated nine Pro-Bowl selections, was named to the All-Pro team seven times, and won three Most Valuable Player awards. Who is this great quarterback?

Answer: Brett Favre

In 1992 Don Majkowski was injured in the fourth game of the season and was replaced by Favre. Favre started every game for the Packers for the next 16 years, sometimes playing with injuries. He holds many career records for his passing and leadership.
8. What city in Wisconsin located on the Mississippi River lays claim to having the World's Largest Six Pack?

Answer: LaCrosse

The Heileman Brewery constructed the six-pact as storage tanks for their beer production. In 1999 Heilemans was sold to Strohs Brewing who in turn sold it to Miller Brewing. The City of Lacrosse purchased the plant and began production of a new line of beverages. During this time the six-pack fell into disuse. The City repainted this landmark.
9. Where in Wisconsin would you find the Queen of the Holy Rosary, Mediatrix of Peace Shrine?

Answer: Necedah

Mary Ann Van Hoof (1909-1984) said she was visited by the Virgin Mary and was given visions, which she pronounced from the village of Necedah in central Wisconsin. Her visions gathered a wide following. In May, 1950, it was reported that 100,000 people attended to hear her visions. The Catholic Church does not recognise this sect. The Shrine draws thousands of visitors each year.
10. Where in Wisconsin would you find the Circus World Museum?

Answer: Baraboo

The famous Ringling Brothers' Circus had its beginnings in Baraboo in 1884. Rather than travel to a warm weather state, the Ringlings wintered their circus in Baraboo. The Circus World Museum is operated by the State of Wisconsin and sprawls over 50 acres.

It is a repository of circus history and features a live circus. For many years the circus wagons and other circus related items were railroaded to Milwaukee for the "Great Circus Parade". During the rail trip to Milwaukee, large crowds would gather at each town it passed through to see the open displays.

The parade has not been held for several years because of funding issues, but will be resumed in 2009.
