Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who developed the special theory of relativity?

Answer: Albert Einstein

Stephen Hawking is a well known scientist who wrote books which were easy enough for the layperson to understand. Francis Crick was one of the scientists who discovered DNA, his partner was James Watson. Madame Bovary is a novel written by Gustave Flaubert about a doctor's wife during the French Revolution.

As most people know Albert Einstein was working as a clerk in the patent office when he developed this theory.
2. Who starred as Judy, Gilbert's nerd girlfriend in "Revenge of the Nerds"?

Answer: Michelle Meyrink

Molly Ringwald was not even in this movie, although she played a lot of geeky characters in her career. Julia Montgomery (AKA Julie Montgomery) played Betty Childs, the object of Luis' affection. Kres Mersky was Mrs. Wormser.
3. What do young children call a four footed, floppy-eared animal who eats carrots?

Answer: Bunny

Rabbits, AKA bunnies, make excellent pets. However, you have to rabbit-proof your house against chewing as well as house break them, as you would a dog or cat.
4. Websters defines this as: "a mounted man-at-arms serving a feudal superior; especially: a man ceremonially inducted into special military rank usually after completing service as page and squire".

Answer: Knight

A paladin is a leading champion of a cause. A dragoon is a member of a European military unit formerly composed of heavily armed mounted troops. A samurai is a military retainer of a Japanese daimyo practicing the code of conduct of Bushido.
5. The Aztecs are credited with using this popular snack as early as the early 16th century during some of their ceremonies.

Answer: Popcorn

Homer mentions sausages (which is what a hog dog is essentially) in his book "Odyssey" in 850. The nacho dates back to only about 40 years ago. Soda dates back to the 1800s. The earliest popcorn was discovered in Mexico in the 1950s and was dated to be 4000 years old.
6. What sci-fi weapon is actually an acronym?

Answer: Laser

Plasma is an energetic state of matter in which some or all of the electrons in the outer atomic orbitals have become separated from the atom. A lightsaber is just a term invented for Lucas' Star Wars series. The Strategic Defense Initiative is often referred to as SDI (which is an acronym, according to Websters Online). Laser actually stands for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.
7. Which flowering tree has male and females, and whose subtypes can range from two inch shrubs to 80 foot tall trees?

Answer: Willow

The wood from a willow can be used to make paper pulp, charcoal for artists' crayons, and also be used for tanning purposes.
8. Who starred as the villain in Leprechaun?

Answer: Warwick Davis

Verne Troyer was Mini Me in the Austin Powers films. Billy Barty has had numerous roles over his 70+ year career to include parts in "Willow" and "Masters of the Universe", as well as founding the organization "Little People of America". Joe C was Kid Rock's side kick.
9. He was the lead actor in the 2000 sci-fi movie whose tag line was "Not A Sound. Not A Warning. Not A Chance. Not Alone." and was about astronauts searching Mars for a way to save Earth, only to have their mission turn south.

Answer: Val Kilmer

Tom Skerritt was in "Alien", John Travolta starred in "Battlefield Earth: A Saga of the Year 3000", and Tim Robbins starred in "Mission to Mars". The movie is of course "Red Planet", and also starred Carrie-Anne Moss and Benjamin Bratt.
10. What movie is a comedy that addresses the social responsibility of scientists and their work?

Answer: Real Genius

1) Einstein is recognized as one of history's true genius'. 2)Michelle Meyrink is Jordan, the female "lead" in the movie. 3) Bunny slippers became a major contributor to the fashion trend in my house after this movie. (Chris Knight wore them all of the time.) 4) Val Kilmer's lead character's name is Chris Knight. 5 and 6) At the end of the movie the laser heats up a LARGE ball of popcorn and the popped kernals overflow from Professor Hathaway's (played by William Atherton) house. 7) "Willow" is one of Val Kilmer's earliest hit movies. 8) Warwick Davis costarred with Val Kilmer in "Willow", although Joanne Whalley got more credit. I'm still not sure why the actor whose character is the name of the movie did not receive top billing, or at least in the top 3. 9) All of these sci-fi movies, except "Alien", were released in 2000.
