Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Into which sea does the river Jordan empty?

Answer: Dead

The sea in which you can famously float while reading a paper is so salty that little can live in it, hence the name. It's shore is the deepest exposed land, being about 400 metres below mean sea level.
2. Which infamous African dictator died in Saudi Arabia in August 2003?

Answer: Amin

Idi Amin was Ugandan dictator from 1971 to 1979 and had been the country's light heavyweight boxing champion for nine years. He glorified in his own atrocities, thought to have cost the lives of up to 500,000 of his own people.
3. Which type of meat is traditionally used in England to make "cottage pie"?

Answer: beef

It is basically minced beef with a topping of mashed potato. If minced lamb is used it becomes "shepherd's pie".
4. Which British group had at least three chart-topping singles in the UK and in the US during the 1980's?

Answer: Wham

Lead singer George Michael then achieved the same feat as a solo artist.
5. What was the name of the sidekick of Lex Luthor, played by Ned Beatty in the "Superman" films?

Answer: Otis

Director of the 1978 film "Superman", Richard Donner, has stated that Otis is his favourite character in the movie. Movie reviewers have generally been less flattering of the "fat bumbling oaf".
6. Two East European countries have names beginning with the same four letters. What is that four-letter beginning?

Answer: Slov

On a state visit, George W Bush once said "The only thing I know about Slovakia is what I learned first-hand from your foreign minister, who came to us in Texas." He had, in fact, met the foreign minister of Slovenia!
Slovakia came about with the split of Czechoslovakia in 1993 and contains Bratislava, as seen in the Bond film "The Living Daylights". Slovenia was, in 1991, the first republic to break from Yugoslavia and is where the famous Lippizaner horses are bred.
7. In nature, what has a central vein called a midrib?

Answer: leaf

In a leaf, because the veins not only carry nutrients but also structurally strengthen, they are also known as ribs. Veins in insect wings are also called ribs (but these have no midrib).
8. If 25 equals silver and 50 equals gold, what does 40 equal?

Answer: ruby

As in wedding anniversaries. I hope I wasn't too cryptic there!
9. Which sergeant was the detective in "The Moonstone" by Wilkie Colins?

Answer: Cuff

Written in 1868, "The Moonstone" is often credited as the first full-length detective novel. In this book the missing diamond of the title turns out to have been stolen by the victim Rachel's cousin while sleepwalking under opium. It was then stolen from him by another man, who is murdered by Indian jugglers.

These jugglers turn out to be high-caste Brahmans who return the diamond to their shrine. An easy case for Sgt Cuff then...
10. Which film company opened its films with Bombardier Wells striking a large gong?

Answer: Rank

Bombardier Billy Wells was the first boxer to win Britain's prestigious Lonsdale Belt in 1911 and defended his title an impressive thirteen times. He later had a classic English ale, Charles Wells Bombardier, named in his honour.
Arthur J Rank made movies on the back of his other work as a flour magnate.
