Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these is NOT a part of each human hair?

Answer: vas deferens

The cortex is composed of fibers which form the inner bulk of the hair shaft. The medulla is composed of the insignificant central air spaces within the cortex. The cuticle is the outer coating around the cortex. And the vas deferens? That's part of the male reproductive system!
2. The only living part of each hair is the root.

Answer: True

The actual hair follicle is composed primarily of the hair root and the muscle surrounding it, among other cells. The protein pushed out by the living follicle is comprised of dead cells. This is why cutting hair doesn't hurt.
3. Which of these women in history is typically depicted without hair?

Answer: Queen Nefertiti

The shaved head of Nefertiti has most often been interpreted as a symbol of her power and/or divinity. Some argue that the shaved hair was a matter of convenience or hygiene. No queen in Ancient Egypt had ever approached the level of status and independence she had - only male rulers.
4. Which of these characters has a story in the Bible that has something to do with hair?

Answer: Samson

The story is from the book of Judges. Samson was the strongest of the Nazarites, and his people were at war with the Philistines. The Philistines enlisted one of their hottest babes, Delilah, to get Samson to reveal the secret source of his strength.

It was in his hair. Once Delilah reported this to her people, they gave him a clip job in his sleep and took him prisoner. According to the story, Samson prayed really hard for one last burst of strength and used it to destroy the Philistines' temple, bringing himself to an end along with it.
5. Which of these groups recorded a hit version of the TITLE song from the musical "Hair"?

Answer: The Cowsills

The song hit #2 in the U.S. The Cowsills are also known for being the inspiration for the television show, "The Partrige Family". They were a real family just like the one in the show, except they only had one sister (the youngest) and they all did their own singing. They also sang the theme to "Love American Style". Sadly, Barbara Cowsill (the mother) died of emphysema in 1985.
6. Which of these actors won an Oscar for her role in the movie "Shampoo"? (Hint: Her daughter is also an actor, but she may not be the one you think.)

Answer: Lee Grant

Grant played a cynical woman whose hairdresser (Warren Beatty) gives her what her husband won't. Carrie Fisher, in her very first movie role, played her daughter. If you want to see Lee Grant in a really dramatic performance twenty years later, check out 1996's "It's My Party". Grant's daughter is Tony winning actor Dinah Manoff ("Grease", "Ordinary People", and TV's "Empty Nest").
7. Which of these is NOT a brand of home perm?

Answer: Caress

Caress is a brand of soap and skin cleansers.
8. Who is the lady who introduced herself into millions of American homes in the late 1970s and early 1980s touting Alberto VO5 hair care products?

Answer: Rula Lenska

These commercials were EVERYWHERE. People always made fun of the ads because Lenska was a complete unknown in the US at the time. Well, that's why she always started each ad by saying "Hi, I'm Rula Lenska"! If she were already famous, she wouldn't have had to. Duh. Lenska is still acting in the UK, where she was born.
9. Which of these people is a famous Beverly Hills hairstylist?

Answer: Jose Eber

Rodney Yee is a yoga instuctor who appears in a popular series of yoga vidoes. Tony Little hawks exercise equipment (very loudly) on television informercials. Linda Georgian is the former head of the Psychic Friends Network. Jose Eber has a major list of celebrity clientele, and is instantly recognizable with long straight hair under a big cowboy hat.

He was also a high profile attendee at Elizabeth Taylor's 8th wedding to Larry Fortensky at Michael Jackson's Neverland estate in 1992. (This qualified as Hollywood's strangest wedding until Liza Minnelli married David Gest, with Elizabeth as her maid of honor. )
10. Which of these men's hairstyles was most popular in the 1980s in the United States?

Answer: the mullet

The mullet, for the few who need a definition, is a haircut in which the sides are cut really short and the back is worn longer. The top part can be either poofy, spiky, or receding. The more of a contrast between the sides, the more pronounced the mullet is. But, after 1992, most guys grew out their sides and cut that back part, as soon as Billy Ray Cyrus's "Achy Breaky Heart" fell off the charts.

This once-hip style, also known as "hockey hair", is now considered a 'hair don't', at least on men. On women, however, it has shown longevity in certain Sapphic circles.
