René-Théophile-Hyacinthe Laënnec (1781-1826) was born in France, graduated in medicine in Paris in 1804, and invented the stethoscope in 1819 while practicing medicine. At that time, for auscultation, the physician placed his hand or laid his ear on the chest of the patient in order to listen to the chest sound. It was a process that didn't work well and it had several disadvantages, especially when the person was overweight.

When examining an obese, heart-troubled woman, Laënnec was reminded of the principle of acoustics, which shows the increase in the intensity of a sound when transmitted by some solid material. He created a device that consisted of a tube 3.5cm in diameter and 25cm long; the end placed on the patient's chest was trumpet-shaped.
