Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Dutch established New York City under what name?

Answer: New Amsterdam

The city was called New Amsterdam until 1664. The Dutch surrendered the city to the British in that year. Some areas of NYC still have Dutch names, including Harlem (named after Haarlem), Stuyvesant (Dutch governor of the colony), and Bleecker Street (named after the Bleecker family, prominent in banking).
2. One of New York City's most famous landmarks is the Statue of Liberty. On which island is the statue? (don't overthink it)

Answer: Liberty Island

Common belief is that the statue was a gift from France. That is partially true. The US had a hand in its creation, which was meant to commemorate the friendship between the two nations. The shell of the statue is copper (copper has a green color when it starts corroding) and the internal structure is steel.

The outer design was created by Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi and the structure was designed by Alexandre-Gustav Eiffel (yes, the Eiffel tower guy). The statue was dedicated in 1886 and stands on Liberty Island. Millions of immigrants passed the statue on their way to Ellis Island - where most of the immigrants were processed as they entered the US. For many, it was (and remains) a symbol of freedom and the promise of a better life.
3. The New York Yankees play in The Bronx (their nickname is the "Bronx Bombers"), but in which borough do the New York Mets play?

Answer: Queens

The Mets have been playing in Queens since they joined the league in 1962. They were one of the first expansion teams in history, designed to fill the void left by the Giants and Dodgers. The Dodgers moved to Los Angeles and the Giants to San Francisco and both played their first games in California in the 1958 season.

In 1969, the "Miracle Mets" won the World Series, beating the heavily-favored Baltimore Orioles.
4. Many buildings in New York City have their own ZIP code. Which building does NOT?

Answer: 1 World Trade Center (Freedom Tower)

Despite being the tallest building in New York City (and in the US), 1 World Trade Center doesn't have its own ZIP code. Because there are so many potential mail recipients in the other three buildings, it's actually more efficient for them to have their own ZIP code.
5. Many of the buildings in and around New York City are in one of the most popular design styles of their era. Which style is prominent in buildings like the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, and the Chrysler Building?

Answer: Art Deco

Art Deco had its heyday in the early 20th century, mostly from the 1920s until the mid-1930s. The Chrysler Building is arguably the most famous example of the Art Deco style. Art Deco sought to bring a sleek, modern look to buildings and décor. It was as much about form as function.
6. Which island, home to amusement park rides, a boardwalk, and the annual Nathan's hot dog eating contest, isn't really an island anymore?

Answer: Coney Island

When Coney Island came to prominence, it was an actual island, separated from Brooklyn. The creek that separated them was filled in during the 1920s and the "island" is now technically a peninsula. If you ever get a chance to go there, Nathan's has great hot dogs (that SNAP!), and fried clam strips (I didn't know about that until my first visit). Coney Island is also home to the Cyclone, one of the oldest roller coasters in the US.
7. Which bridge, spanning the East River, opened on May 24, 1883?

Answer: Brooklyn Bridge

The East River is the main border of Manhattan and Brooklyn. When the bridge was opened, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world, at a length of 1595 feet. The Brooklyn Bridge has also been "sold" a number of times by a con man named George C. Parker.

He "sold" unsuspecting victims the bridge, once even at a price of $50,000. Who would believe they could buy the Brooklyn Bridge?
8. How many acres is Central Park?

Answer: 842

The 842 acres span from 110th Street to 59th Street (north to south) and from 5th Avenue to 8th Avenue (east to west). It is the traditional dividing line between the Upper East Side and the Upper West Side. There are 58 miles of trails within the park's borders!
9. Which of the five boroughs is NOT included in the route of the New York City Marathon?

Answer: They're all included

The marathon course winds in and out of all five boroughs, beginning in Staten Island at the entrance to the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, into Brooklyn, then into Queens. The race then goes into Manhattan, up to The Bronx, then finally ends in Central Park in Manhattan. The first New York City Marathon was held in 1970.
10. New York City is home to an Ivy League university. Which one?

Answer: Columbia

Columbia University was founded in 1754 and was known as King's College from 1754-84. It is located in the Morningside Heights area of northern Manhattan. Notable alumni include Alexander Hamilton, Amelia Earhart, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, and Barack Obama.
