Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Jonathan Swift's novel "Gulliver's Travels", Gulliver visits a land inhabited by people one-twelfth the size of a normal human. Holding its capital at Mildendo, what small island nation was this?

Answer: Lilliput

Lilliput was an island nation supposedly northwest of Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), although in actuality a country named Australia occupies that space. Lilliput was a close neighbor to Blefuscu, which also had miniscule inhabitants. The two nations were parodies of Great Britain and France, with more focus on Lilliput (Swift's native Great Britain).

Brobdingnag was the exact opposite of Lilliput with men standing 12 times taller than an average human, Laputa was a flying island dedicated to music and math, and Luggnagg was a land of immortals trapped in old bodies.
2. Created by JRR Tolkien, this country was created by Isildur and Anárion and eventually became the greatest inhabited by Men in Middle-earth. After Aragorn was crowned king at the end of the Third Age, it became a Reunited Kingdom with Arnor. What realm was this, with its capital at Minas Tirith?

Answer: Gondor

Gondor was a great power in Middle-earth during the early Third Age (which ended at the end of the "Lord of the Rings" chronology), but slowly declined over time. With the War of the Ring and the crowning of Aragorn as King Elessar, Gondor entered a new prosperous age. A prophecy told how Aragorn would be the beginning of a great line that would rule for a hundred generations.
3. In "Nineteen Eighty-Four", Winston Smith lived in a province called Airstrip One, which formerly "had been called England or Britain." Airstrip One was part of a much larger totalitarian state ranging from the Americas to southern Africa to Australia, of which Big Brother ruled all. What massive state was this?

Answer: Oceania

Oceania is by far the largest of the three states that exist in "Nineteen Eighty-Four". It is ruled by a totalitarian dictator named Big Brother that has the power to monitor every single one of his civilians. Through various means, from mind control to inventing a new language, he is able to control the populace to bend to his will.

The state is also in perpetual war with either of the other two states - Eastasia or Eurasia - although Oceania never seems to make any permanent gains.
4. The only citizen of this fictional country that we have any knowledge of is Viktor Navorski, portrayed by Tom Hanks in "The Terminal". He was stranded at John F. Kennedy International Airport for nine months while a civil war raged in his homeland. What country, with its name inspired by an Eastern European city, was this?

Answer: Krakozhia

The name Krakozhia was created by Steven Spielberg as an homage to Krakow, Poland. Throughout the film, several references to other Eastern European countries are made. The Krakozhian language is very similar to Russian (despite actually sounding closer to Bulgarian), Navorski has a Belarusian driver's license, and the national anthem is very similar to Albania's.
5. In the realm of "Futurama", the flag nicknamed "Old Freebie" flies over this great nation. After the president was vaporized, Richard Nixon's head was elected president by a single vote thanks to the robot population. What global realm did the cartoon create?

Answer: United States of Earth

The United States of Earth is very similar to the United States of America, right down to the flag. While it contains the red and white stripes, the 50 stars are replaced by a globe. Also, Richard Nixon was almost barred from running for president again until he found a loophole that allowed him to run with his head on another body - when told nobody can be elected more than twice, he replies "That's right, nobody.

But as you can plainly see, I've got a shiny new body!" as he reveals he bought Bender's body after Bender sold it earlier in the episode.
6. This kingdom is ruled over by a man known only as the Sultan, although we know his daughter Jasmine and once-Grand Vizier Jafar. Eventually, the Sultan allowed Jasmine to marry the simple thief Aladdin, who eventually became nominated for Grant Vizier himself. What fictional domain is this?

Answer: Agrabah

In the original "Aladdin" movie, Jafar temporarily becomes Sultan of Agrabah, the only time in the chronology that the Sultan is not in fact the sultan. In the third movie, "Aladdin and the King of Thieves", Aladdin and Jasmine finally get married, which effectively served as the epilogue to "Aladdin: The Animated Series".
7. In "Equilibrium", a new city-state was established following World War III. Led by Father, the state demands its citizens take a drug called Prozium to eliminate emotions, which it deems the cause of all conflicts. What is this Orwellian state called?

Answer: Libria

Whereas "Nineteen Eighty-Four" focused primarily on the state repressing freedoms of the individual and controlling its citizens' daily lives, "Equilibrium" focused on the repression of emotion in order to stop conflict. This in effect dehumanized its citizens, who simply went along with their lives in a robotic fashion.

The Tetragrammaton Council, headed by Father (a Big Brother figure) enforced the laws through the Grammaton Clerics, specially trained agents in the use of gun kata. Clerics destroy such things as art (the Mona Lisa is seen being destroyed in the film), music, film, and generally anything that causes emotional reactions.
8. One of the most famous and enduring myths of all time, this island nation was first recorded by Plato. In its supposed heyday, it conquered lands across five continents - from India to Norway and Canada to Chile. What enormous empire was this, which ended after the island sank into the sea?

Answer: Atlantis

The concept of Atlantis is ultimately a strange one: approximately 9600 BCE, one advanced island nation that, according to Ignatius L. Donnelly, conquered lands across northern Africa, the coastal regions of Europe, most of the Middle East, the coastal areas of India, most of the present-day United States and Mexico (and some of Canada), and lands along the Amazon River to mid-Chile. According to Plato, Athens itself led a rebellion against the Atlantean Empire, and then one day earthquakes and floods caused the island of Atlantis to sink into the ocean, never to be seen again.
9. Very little is known about this country except that it is tiny, located in Eastern Europe, and is essentially a fourth-world country. Whenever depicted, its residents are always waist-deep in mud, and it has become a main source of outsourcing for Dilbert's unnamed company. What impoverished land is this?

Answer: Elbonia

Little else is known about Elbonia, other than it has abandoned capitalism and the national bird is the Frisbee. After Dogbert becomes King of Elbonia temporarily, a democratic uprising occurs, led by incompetent rebels. Dilbert decided to go to the country to convince Dogbert to step down, and takes a "slingshot flight" (the only way in or out of the country) in and lands in the mud.
10. Fed up with governments around the world, Andrew Ryan set up this fictional city on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean in order to free humanity. He tried to set up a true capitalist system without religion or government, but ultimately failed when criminal Frank Fontaine started a civil war. What city, depicted in the video games of the "Bioshock" series, is this?

Answer: Rapture

"I chose the impossible. I chose... Rapture. A city where the artist would not fear the censor. Where the scientist would not be bound by petty morality. Where the great would not be constrained by the small. And with the sweat of your brow, Rapture can become your city as well." With that, Andrew Ryan set up the city of Rapture underneath the ocean a few hundred miles west of Iceland.

Frank Fontaine set up a smuggling ring inside the city that first found sea slugs containing ADAM, stem cells that could in effect rewrite human DNA. With its discovery, Rapture became inhabited with "splicers" - citizens that became essentially addicted to ADAM until they became insane. Roughly one year after the civil war takes place that essentially wiped out the sane population of the city, the events of "Bioshock" take place with the protagonist discovering the city.
