Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which British invasion band had a hit in the USA with 'Mrs Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter'?

Answer: Herman's Hermits

The British invasion refers to the 1960s when bands from the UK, with The Beatles at the forefront, peacefully invaded the USA with a new type of music. Herman's Hermits, with lead singer Peter Noone, were among these bands and had two number one hits on the US Billboard Hot 100.

'Mrs Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter' was the first of these, reaching the top spot in March 1965 and was followed three months later by 'I'm Henry VIII, I Am' - neither of these was issued as a single in the UK. The band continued to have chart success until the late 1960s (early 1970s in the UK) but their fortunes waned when Noone left in 1971.
2. The brown flower bat is native to two islands in which part of the world?

Answer: Caribbean

This small species of bat is found on the island of Hispaniola, home to the countries of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, and also in Puerto Rico. It feeds primarily on nectar and fruits although it will also eat insects. Roosts numbering in the thousands are common, in caves like most bats, and its numbers mean its conservation status is 'Least Concern' in the first quarter of the twenty-first century.
3. 'The Man in the Brown Suit' was a 1924 novel by which author?

Answer: Agatha Christie

Not as well known as many of the author's novels, probably because it features neither Poirot nor Miss Marple, the story involves a young woman who witnesses the death of a man who is killed on the tracks at an underground railway station. She finds a clue, which she follows up, only to find herself caught up in a complicated plot which takes her to Africa.

The story is notable for being the first appearance of Colonel Race, a character who appears in three other Christie books, including two with Poirot. There have been two television adaptations of the story at the time of writing - one in the USA in 1989 and a French version in 2017.
4. If you are wrapped up in your own thoughts and paying little attention to what is happening around you, you are said to be in a brown what?

Answer: Study

The expression has been around for a long time, from the early to mid sixteenth century. Originally interpreted as referring to a state of despondency, the more accepted modern explanation is that it means to be lost in thought and concentrating on something which might be a problem or has just absorbed all your attention.

The 'brown' refers to being dark or gloomy while 'study' originally referred to mental abstraction.
5. Entertainer Derren Brown is described as a 'mentalist and illusionist'. From which country does he originate?

Answer: England

Brown was born in London and came to prominence in a series called 'Mind Control' in 2000. His performances include elements of magic, psychology and misdirection - he makes it clear that he has no supernatural powers. Brown's act is mostly based on magic and he often explains how he achieves his results. These explanations are frequently untrue though, and are part of the act and Brown's skill at misdirection.
6. Brown Willy is a hill located in which of these regions of the UK?

Answer: Bodmin Moor

Bodmin Moor is situated in England's most south-westerly county, Cornwall, and Brown Willy is the highest point of the county. It reaches 1,378 feet (420 metres) above sea level and is located in a particularly desolate part of the county.

Brown Willy is considered a sacred place by some groups and is a focal point for hikers and runners. The original Cornish name was Bronn Wennili, meaning 'hill of swallows'.
7. Demerara and Muscovado are both types of brown sugar. Which one is darker?

Answer: Muscovado

The difference between white sugar and brown sugar is the presence of molasses to give the colouring. The more molasses is added, the darker the resultant sugar.

Demerara is a light brown sugar containing around 2% molasses. The name comes from the region in what is now Guyana, South America, where it was originally made. Demerara sugar is often used on crème brûlée. Muscovado has a higher percentage of molasses, around 10% being common, with India being the main producer of this dark brown sugar.
8. The Battle of Brown's Ferry took place in which US state?

Answer: Tennessee

This battle was part of America's Civil War and took place on 27 October 1863. The battle itself was relatively insignificant, but the victory by the Union Army meant that the Confederate Army could no longer prevent their opponents from using the Tennessee River to transport supplies to their forces near Chattanooga.

The Battle of Chattanooga, which took place a month later, led to another Union victory with the Confederate Army retreating into Georgia.
9. Brown Betty is a dessert traditionally made with which fruit?

Answer: Apples

This is an American dessert which normally uses apples although pears can also be used as can berries. The standard recipe for a Brown Betty calls for layers of fruit to be alternated with layers of breadcrumbs. The dish is then baked and can be served with cream, custard or any type of sauce.

The result is similar to other desserts made with apples, such as apple crumble, which has butter, sugar and flour rubbed together to make the topping or apple cobbler where the topping is more of a dumpling.
10. A meadow brown is a species of which of these creatures?

Answer: Butterfly

Maniola jurtina, to give it its scientific name, is a butterfly found in Europe, parts of the Middle East and North Africa. It has brown wings (no surprise there) with yellow or orange markings on them. The yellow markings are more pronounced in the female.

The larvae (caterpillars) feed on various grasses and the butterflies are found in any areas of grassland, including parks and cemeteries. Because of its range, the meadow brown is not considered to be under threat in any part of its habitat.
