Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of Gandalf's sword?

Answer: Glamdring

Glamdring is first seen in "The Hobbit" - Orcrist is the name of Thorin's sword, and Beater and Biter are the nicknames given them by the orcs.
2. What is the southern-most national capital in the world?

Answer: Wellington, New Zealand

Argentina contains the southern-most point of land in the world (Tierra del Fuego) but the capital is at the north of the country, making Wellington, NZ, the southern-most.
3. What is classified as the largest desert in the world?

Answer: Antarctica

The definition of a desert is "an arid region which receives annual rainfall of 10 inches (25 centimeters) or less" ( http://www.nationalgeographic.com ). Antarctica recieves less rain than this on average - almost zero - which thus classifies it a desert, and since it is larger than the Sahara, it is the largest desert in the world.
4. Which fictional character plays Duck Dogers ("In the 24th and a half century!")?

Answer: Daffy Duck

His sidekick is played by Porky Pig.
5. What American holiday coincides with All Saints' Day?

Answer: None of the Above

All Saints' Day is November first - Halloween is All Hallow's Eve, the day before.
6. Who is the first person to have been nominated for Emmy awards for the same character on three different shows?

Answer: Kelsey Grammer

Doctor Frasier Winslow Crane has appeared on "Cheers", "Frasier" and "Wings" - and got Emmy nominations for each.
7. To what depth does "Mark Twain" refer?

Answer: 2 fathoms

Samuel Clemens (who uses the pseudonym Mark Twain) will be able to tell you this one. The Mississippi riverboatmen used to tell the depth of water by a weight tied to a rope. The rope is divided up into double-arm-span lengths - that is, one fathom lengths, or six foot lengths - by knots or marks.

When the water level reached the second mark from the bottom - two fathoms, the shallowest depth a boat could go - the depth man would call "Mark Twain".
8. In 2001, the name of Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand, was changed for a day. To what was it changed?

Answer: Middle Earth

It was changed to celebrate the opening of "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" on December 10th, 2001 - since the movie (indeed the entire trilogy) was made in New Zealand.
9. In the original "Star Wars" trilogy (episodes IV, V and VI), how many people played Darth Vader?

Answer: 3

James Earl Jones played his voice, David Prowse played his body, and Sebastien Shaw played his head (when his helmet was removed at the end of "Star Wars VI"), as well as the disembodied spirit of Anakin Skywalker.
10. Who said "Pluralitas non ponenda est sine necessitate"? (Multiplicity is not to be asserted when it is unnecessary.)

Answer: William of Occam

It is now known as Occam's Razor, and is often simplified to "the simplest explanation is usually the correct one". William was a Fransiscan Monk, born in the town of Occam in Surrey, England in 1285, and it is thought he died of the Black Plague in 1349. Copernicus used William of Occam's principle to simplify Ptolemy's model of the heavens from eighty circles of motion to just thirty four.

Sherlock Holmes said that "Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be correct."
11. If I were to ask for a gross of apples, how many is the correct amount that I should be given?

Answer: 144

A gross is a dozen dozens, so that's 12x12 = 144
12. What does the "J.R.R." in J.R.R. Tolkien stand for?

Answer: John Ronald Reuel

Tolkien's father's name was Arthur Reuel Tolkien, and his mother was Mabel Suffield (before she married, that is). Tolkien occasionally used the pseudomym "Oxymore", since his surname means "stupidly clever" in its original German.
13. If I were to tell someone in Latin that he was "sinister", of what would I be accusing him?

Answer: Left-handedness

"Sinister" also means "unlucky". Latin for right-handedness is "dexter" (also means "skillful"), giving rise to the English terms "dextrous" (skillful in the use of the hands) and "ambidextrous" (both-handedness).
14. What is the square root of 1024?

Answer: 32

It's reasonably easy to work out. 1024 is 2^10, and 32 is 2^5. (2^5) * (2^5) is equal to 2^(5+5) which is equal to 2^10.
15. What is the English translation of the name of the Chinese capital city, Beijing?

Answer: Northern Capital

It was called the Northern Capital to differentiate it from the Southern Capital (Nanjing) in ancient times. "Middle Kingdom" is the English translation of the Chinese name for China (Zhongguo), and the Forbidden City is an enclosure within Beijing where the Emperors lived (but only when Beijing was the capital).
