Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which habitat would one be most likely to find a cottontail rabbit?

Answer: Brush

These tiny bunnies sometimes have burrows.
2. What is the main color of a female Eclectus parrot?

Answer: Red

The Eclectus, from New Guinea, is an unusual bird because the females are more brightly colored than the males. The males are primarily green.
3. Which of the following features do the cacomistle (ring-tailed cat) and the raccoon NOT have in common?

Answer: Mask

The cacomistle and raccoon are both in the raccoon family (Procyonidae.) The cacomistle is found in the western US and South America. It is a slender animal with a foxlike face and a long, fluffy, striped tail. It has also been called a "miner's cat" because it would hang around mining camps and eat mice.
4. What is the only ocean in which the bowhead whale is found?

Answer: Arctic

The bowhead is the only whale that does not migrate to warmer waters to bear its young. They have the biggest head of any animal-over 40% of the length of their bodies!
5. The ornamental plants kangaroo vine and trailing begonia are closely related to which of the following?

Answer: Grapes

Both are members of the genus Cissus, part of the grape family.
6. Which of the following species of kangaroo is the largest?

Answer: Gray

The grey kangaroo can be over six feet tall, and weigh almost 150 pounds. The red kangaroo is the largest of all, but was not one of the offered options.
7. Which of the following vultures is African?

Answer: Ruppell's

The Ruppell's vulture, also known as Ruppell's griffon, nests in large colonies of up to 100 birds. They can fly over 100 miles a day in search of carcasses. The other mentioned vultures are all from the New World.
8. A narwhal's "horn" is actually a tooth. Some researchers believe it is an incisor, others believe it is a...?

Answer: Canine

The horn is found only in males. It was once sold as unicorn horn.
9. From which family is the bird that is the fastest in actual flight (as opposed to in a dive?)

Answer: Swift

The Indian spine-tailed swift can reach speeds well over 100 miles per hour.
10. All right! What do all of the above answers have as their common bond?

Answer: Fox

Foxes are, of course, canines. Red, gray, Ruppell's, Arctic and swift are all species of foxes. The red, gray and swift are found in North America; the Ruppell's fox is a little-known African species. A brush is a fox's tail, and a mask is a fox's face. "The Fox and the Grapes" is the most famous fox fable by Aesop.
